1 Knights of Columbus NWSLTTR Balboa Assembly Number 0040 XCV February 2018 Number 08 California s Oldest and Busiest Assembly Averaging a Color Corps Callout er Week!
2 Knights of Columbus Balb oa Assembly number 0040 NWSLTTR February 2018 XCV Number 08 Navigators Corner Dear Brothers in Christ, Let s proclaim, anew, our love of life, and dedicate, anew, our lives to love - Happy Valentine s Life! Yes, everyday is Valentine s Day for us, men who call ourselves Knights, and, yes, for everyone who loves God and neighbor and seeks to SK Greg Anthony, Faithful Navigator do God s will and help build up God s Holy City. Yes, think about who Jesus is, and know who St. Valentine is - think about who Valentine is, and know who each one of us is. Valentine was a Catholic priest martyred, February 14, 278, during the reign of mperor Claudius Gothicus.Valentine was arrested, imprisoned and beheaded for marrying Christian couples and providing aid to Christians being persecuted by the Roman authorities. Helping Christians in Valentine s time was considered a crime by those who did not know Our Lord. Sometimes, in the place and time in which we live, it might seem that way to some amongst us. Standing up for Life by helping young mothers and fathers and their sons and daughters, and for Marriage by advocating and living out the Truth of Male-Female complementarity, and for Religious Freedom by sharing the Good News of Redemption-Forgiveness of our sins, all, can make some feel timid... but only if we forget Who Jesus, the One and True Author of the Law is - or if we forget who we are as His Devoted Disciples! Remembering Who Jesus is and doing what Jesus commands - loving God and loving neighbor - takes away all fear. Thus, as Brothers in Christ, each of us joins himself with St. ope John aul II and all the Communion of Saints, affirming in thought, word and action, Non abbiate paura - Aprite le porte a Cristo! Open the doors to Christ! Knowing we are loved, in Truth, by the Almighty God of Creation, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, inspires and empowers each and every one of us to live, and to love, in God s Truth and ower. Thus, for Knights and other saints, wherever we happen to live and to love, for ourselves and one another and whomsoever we work to help - today, tomorrow and always - Valentine s charism lives! Vivat Jesus et semper adelante! Dear Brothers, Captains Corner Our America is stronger because of our faith and being patriots of the Temple and of our Lord Jesus Christ. This Strength is because of our Lord providing everything we need in order to do his bid. You of a man of faith must cherish all you have SK Bill Redmond, and all forthcomings. We all have days when we feel empty-handed and unprepared to do the work of the Lord. We might say to ourselves, God hasn t given me enough patience or I wish I had the same compassion that so-and- so has. In these moments, we can try to consider the no food, no sack, no money principle. When we think about Jesus sending the disciples out along rocky footpaths in sweltering heat without as much as a drachma to spend or a barley loaf to eat, it might seem neglectful. But that s because we are looking at this story with twenty-first- century eyes. It was common practice in Jesus day for people to welcome traveling preachers into their homes and care for their needs. Hospitality was one of the top virtues of ancient Israel! But we can take a spiritual lesson from this passage: God will not abandon us. (Mark 6:8). So today, brothers ask God to fill you up with all the provisions you need for your journey. Let him relieve you of the burden of trying to provide for yourself, just as he did for the disciples. Don t be afraid to tell the Lord what you think you re missing. Ask for his help. He won t leave you empty-handed. Blessings, SK Bill Redmond, SIR KNIGHTS! If any Assembly Officer cannot attend the meeting, please contact the to be excused. SK Bill Redmond billandliza@yahoo.com Next meeting Thursday February 8, 2018 Columbus Club 4425 Home Ave, San Diego, CA Attire: Informal 6:30 M - Dinner Chili provided by SK Greg Anthony 7:00 M - Meeting SK Gregory Jon Anthony, Faithful Navigator, page 1
3 The udists, cjm From the Desk of the Faithful Friar Fr. James D. Burson, CJM Congregation of Jesus & Mary Balboa Assembly No San Diego, California The Teachings of Humanae Vitae and Advancements in the Science of Fertility can help us build a Culture of Life The Gift of Life When the Supreme Court revisited Roe in the 1992 lanned arenthood v. Casey decision, the 5-4 majority argued that Roe could not be overturned because, for two decades, people had made choices about their lives and intimate relationships in reliance on the availability of abortion in the event that contraception should fail. by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson ope aul had a very different response to such challenges one that has been described as Christian personalism. In Humanae Vitae, he wrote this about married love: Husband and wife become in a way one heart and one soul, and together attain their human fulfillment. It is a love that is total.... Whoever really loves his partner loves not only for what he receives, but loves that partner for the partner s sake (9). Dozens of annual marches demonstrate the momentum of the pro-life movement across the united states Not everyone can make the trip to the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. But since 1974, a steady stream of companion marches has grown. Now more than 60 local marches take place across the United States, allowing many more thousands to take a stand for life. For instance, approximately 10,000 people participate in the Dallas March for Life, which started in 2002.
