The first meal was served on September 10, 1989, and we have continued to serve meals each Sunday since, missing only 2 or 3 Sundays when another church served a special meal. We are grateful for all the hours that so many people have volunteered to offer a hot meal for those who may not have a meal otherwise. The original steering committee that planned the meals were: Joyce Hunt, Sally Roberson and Marilyn Clark. Marilyn and Jim Clark have continued to plan the meals and purchase the groceries for these 25 years, retiring from this role earlier this spring. Kari Wedge has graciously filled that role. Kathy Wolf has coordinated volunteers who prepare, serve, and clean up each Sunday. If you would like to be part of this meaningful ministry as we head into our second 25 years, please call Kathy Wolf at Float Into Fellowship Time Sunday, September 21 10:00-11:00 am Fellowship Hall Please note the change in date! 3 YOU CAN HELP! On Monday, August 11, 2014, the City of Detroit and Metro Detroit experienced what is being called an epic storm, with as much as eight inches of rain falling in some parts of the Detroit Renaissance District in a matter of hours. UMCOR has been mobilized and is providing support but their focus is on community needs, not church recovery. Sixteen of the 75 local churches in the Detroit Renaissance District have had significant damage from flooding, and six parsonages have also had extensive flooding, many with raw sewage. The Warren First United Methodist Church had 8 feet of water in their church basement, and the Warren Community has been devastated. An outside wall in the People s United Methodist Church in Detroit was so heavily damaged that it is buckling, and several other churches have had raw sewage pour into their facilities. As the massive clean up is underway, many churches are discovering that their insurance will simply not cover all the costs that are involved in the clean-up and rebuilding. In some cases, this gap is quite significant. For this reason, we are asking for your assistance to help us bridge this insurance gap for churches with significant damage. Your help will go directly to local churches in need in the affected areas. Write Detroit Flooding on the memo line of your check. Diane Merrick has been trained at a Stephen Series Leader's Training Course this August. She will help lead our Stephen Ministry by selecting, training, and supervising our Stephen Ministers, and making sure that our Stephen Ministry here at FUMC runs smoothly. 4 The Alpha Course DON T FORGET TO SIGN UP TODAY! (You may sign-up at the Welcome Table in the Parlor, or by calling the church office, , ext.118.) Developed by Rev. Nicky Gumble, this course gives the opportunity to explore the meaning of life. Beginning September 17, and going through the middle of November, this course will meet each Wednesday evening starting at 6:45 pm with refreshments. Sessions will be led by Rev. Dr. J. D. Landis, Rev. Dr. Chuck Keyworth and Rev. Jung Eun Yum. To learn more about The Alpha Course, please visit alphausa.org. Rejuvenating the FUMC Memorial Garden Rev. Dave Kidd, who has designed many Methodist Memorial Gardens in Michigan including Lake Louise and Bay View, has been enlisted to help with rejuvenating our Memorial Garden. Rev. Kidd will be attending our first meeting on September 20. If you have an interest in being a part of updating the FUMC Memorial Garden and/or have gardening skills that you are willing to share to achieve that goal, please contact Gary Smith at or the church office, extension 110, for more information. The Art of Sharing committee would like to celebrate the blessed assurance those hymns provide, and hope that the artwork displayed in Fellowship Hall on September 21 will illustrate and maybe highlight hymns' bedrock status in your faith journey, helping us to trust and obey. Come and see if we have chosen YOUR favorite hymn! NEW MEMBER CLASSES will be starting Sunday, October 5 (and continuing each week through November 23) in the Conference Room during the Sunday School hour from 10:15 11:05 am. This will provide time for us to get to know each other and move through the progression of membership commitments. Membership vows will be taken during worship on December 7. Childcare for the classes will be provided if needed, and older children will be able to attend Sunday School classes. Please contact Rev. The Midland Area CROP Hunger Walk will be on Sunday October 5, Registration will be at the Midland Center for the Arts at 1:30 pm and the walk will begin at 2:00 pm.
