3 Welcome Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Maxwell The Staff/Parish Relations Committee is pleased to announce the addition of Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Maxwell to our staff as part-time Pastor of Congregational Care. During his years as a United Methodist elder, Dr. Maxwell served in four appointments: the Kilmanagh and Unionville UMC charge, Holly: Calvary UMC, and Farmington: First UMC. His last appointment was to the Saginaw Bay District as Superintendent and he recently retired from that position on June 30, Jeff is married to Jan and they have three adult children, six grandchildren, and a Goldendoodle puppy. Quoting Jeff s own words: Since the beginning of his ministry, Jeff believes God has opened and closed doors, and Jeff has tried to respond faithfully. Along the way, he discovered the risen Christ to be companion and teacher, savior and friend. There was and is mystery and awe, mercy and grace, always amazing grace. He is grateful beyond words for God s continuing guidance through the Holy Spirit, and believes God has opened another door at First United Methodist Church. To God be the glory. We couldn t be more excited or honored to welcome Jeff and Jan to Midland First! Caring Closet Items Requested Throughout the month of December please help Family Life Council collect personal care items to be distributed to area high school students. Suggested items are: deodorant, toothpaste, body wash, shampoo, feminine hygiene products, and disposable razors. A large collection box is in the Parlor for you to place your donated items. Let s try to fill the box by December 31! Page 3

4 Looking for a fun family or group activity? Please consider serving hot cocoa at the Santa House. It requires arriving about an hour before you begin serving, making the cocoa, and taking it across the street near the Santa House to serve. Our remaining dates for serving are Monday, Dec Friday, Dec. 23 Sign up through Sign Up Genius on the church website, fumcmidweb.org, under "News and Updates" for open serving times. There will also be a calendar on Rev. Keyworth s office window, updated with shifts filled via Sign Up Genius and any potential open times. We will update this as often as possible. Thank you. S.O.W. and Grow Team Southeastern Wildfire The wildfires in the southeastern United States threatened people, property, pets, and livestock for weeks. Cathy Earl, UMCOR U.S. disaster response manager, has been in communication with the disaster coordinators representing the United Methodist Conferences in all affected areas. The Holston Conference in East Tennessee is asking that we not send supplies or any teams at this time. For now, two things are most beneficial: Prayers for all those affected. Pray for all of those who responded, emergency personnel, survivors, tourists, business owners, those having to evacuate, everyone! Please also be in prayer for the Holston Conference of the UMC as they respond to their hurting neighbors. A check can be written to Midland FUMC with Southeastern Wildfire on the memo line. Christmas gift cards are available in the church office if you wish to honor a friend or family member with this donation. Page 4

5 Mission Opportunity MEXICO VIM Rio Bravo, Mexico March 3-16, 2017 (You can go for either 1 week or 2 weeks.) Cost is $375/week, which covers all expenses while in Mexico (except personal spending). You are responsible for the transportation cost to/from McAllen, TX (round trip flights average $350). Besides good food and fellowship on this trip, we will be working on the following projects: building a casita, teaching sewing at two different churches, and doing small projects as needed. FUNDRAISING/DONATIONS: We will be selling items (great gift ideas for Christmas and birthdays) between services in Fellowship Hall Dec. 4, 11, and 18. The money raised will be used to pay for the casita ($2,700), rice and beans to be distributed to three different areas, supplies, and equipment for churches (tables, chairs, etc.). We are also hoping to collect enough money to help repair one of the churches. If you would like to make a contribution, please make a check out to FUMC with RIO BRAVO MISSION on the memo line. Again this year, we will be taking a van down with donations and supplies. Items that are greatly needed are: kitchen utensils, sturdy plastic plates and bowls, stainless flatware, heavy duty pots/pans/skillets (some cook over open flames), bedding, towels, shoes, etc. Because of Mexican Law, clothing must be NEW, so please leave the tags on. Children and adult-size underwear is GREATLY needed. The shoes can be used. Thank you so much for all your support and prayers. If you are interested in going on the trip, or want more information, please contact Nancy Hill, or NHILL54@earthlink.net. Please donate your Campbell Soup label bar codes, Spartan Brand product bar codes, and Box Tops for Education. The label collection bin is located in the new wooden cubby shelf in the office area. 14 Order of Worship - 9AM December 18, 2016 Liturgist: Rev. Dr. J. D. Landis GREETINGS & SHARING OF ANNOUNCEMENTS The Prelude is a signal to end our conversations and prepare our hearts for worship. PRELUDE A Carol Fantasy arr. F. Gramann Carillon Choir - Jantz Black, director ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING The Townley Family Scripture Reading Romans 1:1-7 (Light the first three candles.) Reader: Paul reminds us of the importance of being called to the cause of Jesus Christ. Who are those who are set apart? Make no mistake...it is all of us! We are the family of God. The grace brought (and bought) for us in God s child, our savior, brings us to wholeness, not once a year, but 24/7. A baby in a manger, a child nurtured by loving parents, a youth with vision and hope, an adult with fears of the future are all welcome in God s amazing presence. In Sierra Leone, with 50 percent of the population being 15 years of age and younger, being God s family brings hope for the future. In the language of the Christians in Sierra Leone: God dei (God provides)! Reader: Come and experience the wonder of God s presence. People: We are your family! Reader: Our God has loved us forever without beginning or end. People: Our hearts are open to receive love, peace, and healing. Reader: Share God s love with all you meet. People: We are ready to serve. (Light the fourth candle.) Reader: May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing. All: So that we may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. *HYMN Angels from the Realms of Glory #220 UNISON PRAYER In this Advent of expectation draw us together in unity, that our praise and worship might echo in these walls and also through our lives. In this Advent of expectation draw us together in mission, that the hope within might be the song we sing, and the melody of our lives. In this Advent of expectation draw us together in service, that the path we follow might lead us from a stable to a glimpse of eternity. We pray in Jesus name. Amen.
