Sacrament of Baptism The sacrament of baptism for infants is administered on the 3rd weekend of the month. Parents should contact the parish office to set up an appointment for a baptism preparation class at least 1 month prior to the baptism. Parents must be registered parishioners or have a letter from their home parish with permission for the baptism to take place at a different church. Godparents must be practicing Catholics at least 16 years of age who have received the sacrament of confirmation and have a letter of good standing from the pastor of their home parish if they are not registered parishioners of St. Leo. A baptized Christian who is not Catholic may serve as a Christian witness to the baptism but not as a godparent. Sacrament of Marriage A couple wishing to marry must contact the priest at least six months before setting the wedding date. The couple will be required to attend a marriage preparation course which will include at least one formal program such as an Engaged Encounter weekend or the Sponsor Couple Program. Sacrament of Reconciliation The sacrament of Reconciliation is available each Sunday from 10:15-10:45AM, Thursday 11:00-11:45AM or by calling the Parish Office for an appointment. Additional times are listed in the bulletin during Lent and Advent. Sacrament of Eucharist to the Homebound Please notify the Parish Office if you or a family member is homebound and would like to receive the Eucharist. Parish Hall or Classroom Use Use of the Parish Hall or classrooms for all meetings must be cleared through the Parish Office. All non-parish events such as showers, rehearsal dinners, wedding or anniversary receptions must be reserved 3 weeks before the event. For more information please contact Darryl Rezac at SAINT THOMAS BECKETT ( ) - DECEMBER 29 To anyone who imagines conflict between religion and politics to be a modern phenomenon, history witnesses otherwise. Martyred under Henry VIII in 1535, Thomas More declared, "I die the King's good servant, but God's first!" Thomas Becket could have said the same four centuries earlier. As Henry II's closest friend and trusted chancellor, Becket, the King presumed, could be counted on, if made Archbishop, to deliver the church to royal control. But Becket experienced a profound conversion, confirmed by the ordination liturgy's rich symbolism of the bishop as Good Shepherd and the church as Bride of Christ. Renouncing secular responsibilities, distributing his wealth to the poor, Thomas became the church's uncompromising champion. Faced with this "new" Becket, the King's previous friendship turned into a ferocious, almost irrational hatred. As eight centuries later, Archbishop Romero would be martyred at the altar of Christ's sacrifice, Becket was slain before the altar of Canterbury Cathedral by royal agents, neither the first nor last good shepherd to lay down his life as the price of freedom for Christ's church and justice for Christ's sheep. We speak of the family of nations, of our church and parish families. The greatest compliment we can pay a friend or gracious host is to say that we feel at home with them, we feel part of the family. Families are the first crucibles in which love is tested and tempered. Jesus himself was one of three people who lived in the shadow of each other. This family, like our own, did not always get it right, but they always tried to. These three amateurs were on holiday, and one of them got lost. Two were worried sick and took great measures to find the third, a boy after all, who was seeking the meaning of his calling. Amid conflicting schedules and commitments, a young man, testing the limits, has strayed from his parents and gone off to the big city. Mary and Joseph search frantically, only to find the child Jesus in the temple, conversing with the elders and scholars of the law, who are amazed at his wisdom. In the time of Jesus, the temple was the religious center of Jewish ritual. Outside of Jerusalem, people gathered in the synagogues, centers of learning, for daily prayer and study. Still, everyone longed to journey to the temple to participate in the offerings, and to fulfill certain obligations of the law that could only be done there. On this feast, we catch a glimpse of the family of Jesus: parents dealing with the normal stresses of raising a child, and yet completely grounded in the ways of faith and tradition. There has always been an appreciation in Christianity for the value of pilgrimage--the journey to holy places that is a symbol of our life s journey to God, and a sense of connection to important events in our family history. During the Christmas season, many of us undertake pilgrimages to the family homestead for festival meals, to the parishes where we were formed in the faith, or perhaps even to a beautiful manger scene or festival of lights. There are few better days than this in our calendar for spending time with the family, especially on a short pilgrimage to a favorite place. Just make sure that no one gets left behind! Rev.
