3 Senior Pastor - Rev. Ray McDonald Worship Him with Gladness Psalm 100:2 Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. On Saturday this will be part of a Scripture that is read at my father s life celebration service. One thing my dad enjoyed doing more than most other things was worshiping God and he did it with much gladness. I can remember the Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday night and revival services he used to lead. He loved to worship being in the presence of God with gladness and joy in his heart. He would visit other churches often just to experience their worship to see if there was a way to improve the worship at his church. Saturday at 3 pm at Mt. Oak Fellowship we will honor his life and celebrate with those who attend what it means to be in the presence of God in worship. Please plan now to attend if you are available. It will be an uplifting service for sure. Part of the passage that will be used Saturday goes like this: Psalms 100:1-4 1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. 2 Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. Most who know me know me to be very emotional. I m writing this on Thursday morning as I have been working on my father s life celebration service. I had a moment this morning when the tears flowed for me my pain my loss but never have I cried for my dad because he is in the presence of God enjoying some awesome worship. I can just imagine my dad singing with his strong voice a voice we hadn t heard for a number of years because of illness but a voice I have engraved in my memory from years of watching him enjoy worshipping his Lord and Savior his God for decades. Join us Saturday at 3 pm for a worship service that will honor my father but more importantly will bring glory and honor to God our Father! For those who get this on Sunday and missed the service I pray that Sunday s worship will also bring honor and glory to our God! Just something to think about today as you go on your way. 3

4 Children s Director - Babette Phillips Raising Children to Reign and Rule on Earth We are more than half way through the teaching on Kid s Carrying the Kingdom and I hope you have noticed what your children have been taking home. Have they told you about their soaking time becoming pickles? Or about the mission God is sending them on? Have you noticed them reading their Bible more? Many hands go up when I ask if they are reading their Bibles daily. What a great discipline to learn at such a young age! This teaching, Carrying the Kingdom, is centered around the Father s love, and how our mission is to Bring heaven to Earth!!! When we do our mission and bring what is in Heaven to earth, people are saved, healed and set free. Our best example of our Father s love and our mission is Jesus s life. God is so cool to give us the details of the plan to follow through Jesus.all we need to do is listen and believe. Jesus was sent to the earth as a man and because He was a man He needed the power of the Holy Spirit to perform miracles. Not just miracles of healing but the miracle to forgive, to have compassion and to show unconditional love to those unlovable. As God s children, we too can receive the same power, the same Holy Spirit that Jesus and His disciples had. This gift from heaven will empower and release our children into fulfilling an exciting life of miracles and bring heaven to earth. We take time each week to sit quietly before God and ask for His direction and a refilling of His Holy Spirit. I have encouraged your children to pray daily for God s instruction and their mission, pray for others when they are out in public and to offer a smile and a kind word. As we move from foundational learning into practical examples, I pray you allow your children to take time to hear from God and complete their missions daily. Kingdom Kids PARENTS: Now that summer is over and everyone is settling back in for the fall, I will be contacting parents to volunteer one Sunday a month in Kingdom Kids. What do volunteers do??? A volunteer is in the room to sit with the children and help them stay focused. Kingdom Kids is a large group environment and when questions are addressed to large groups, sometimes small discussions get started. Parent volunteers help keep the group on track so everyone learns together and has fun during the process. NEXT WEEK: Please pray for me next week as I head out to a Children s Leaders Transformation School This is a full week of workshops on being equipped to create and sustain a godly culture for the children I minster to. I am looking forward to a wonderful week of learning from many children s pastors on many areas of ministering to children and expanding on our current ministry for children. When I return I will have a Parent Meeting Saturday Oct 6 9AM to share what I learned. Come and visit with me over coffee and donuts as I share my heart, along with what I learned and my vision for children s ministry. 4

5 Youth Director - Jonathan Brooker Steps to a Successful School Year 5 Never Ever Give Up It s tough to keep going. It s not necessarily easy to start things, but there s an excitement when you start something new and you have that anticipation of new things. It s flashy. It s big. I m not saying that it s easy, but there is some momentum behind it. What s also not easy but doesn t even have much excitement at all behind it either is keeping going. Just like running long distance, everyone gets off to a quick start and pushes hard but then it gets past that first lap and you start to see some people slowing down. The first few weeks of school have that sort of excitement in the air. You may have gotten a new outfit, new book pack, new classes, new teachers, new school, new friends and more. There s a lot of things that are new that can allow us to be motivated to do well and make this school year better than any other we ve had. But then it gets past the first few weeks and you start feeling the weight of those new classes and all their work. The lack of sleep starts to catch up to you. It s getting colder and darker more and more and you start naturally just feeling like shutting down. My challenge to you as I end this series of articles on Steps to a Successful School Year is that you don t give up. It s worth it to push on and to push through the obstacles. You ll be glad that you did. You just need to keep up the effort so that you can get to the other side and look back and celebrate the work you ve done. The world is full of good starters but not nearly as many good finishers. Be one of the few that keep going and never give up. Student Track: What s the thing that is going to make you want to quit most? What can you do to get yourself to push through the obstacles What do your dreams and goals for this year and even for your life have to do with pushing through and never giving up? Parent Track: You can do it! Your greatest opportunity as a parent, I believe, is to encourage and equip your child(ren) to reach their fullest capabilities. So discover your kids challenges and help walk them through them. What challenges will you face in making it through this year that will cause you to want to quit? Why is it worth pushing through anyway? 5

6 Sandwiches for the Homeless Can you make a few sandwiches for September 23? Sandwiches will be taken to Martha's Table in NE, DC, on Sunday, September 23, for distribution to the homeless in the District. They should be left in the refrigerator in the church kitchen by 11:30 on Sunday morning and clearly marked for Martha's Table or the homeless. Sandwiches should be prepared according to the following guidelines: peanut butter and jelly or meat (bologna, ham, turkey, etc) and/or cheese. DO NOT USE ANY CONDI- MENTS SUCH AS MAYONNAISE, LETTUCE, PICKLES, OR MUS- TARD. The sandwiches will more than likely be frozen before being distributed. They need not be cut but should be INDIVIDUALLY BAGGED IN ZIPLOCK BAGS and then returned to the bag the bread was purchased in or some other suitable container for transporting. Thank you. Feasts of the Bible Come and discover how the feasts God laid out for His people in the Old Testament pointed the way to Jesus and how they can deepen our faith today. The Odd Fridays small group will begin this seven-session study of Feasts of the Bible on Friday, October 5. We meet on alternating Fridays from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Russ and Molly Holloway s home.
