As Jesus approaches the town He sees a funeral procession in progress for a young man who had died. His mother, already a widow has no other sons. This presented a serious problem in Jesus day. The lack of a man in her life would make it very difficult for the woman to get her very basic needs met. Food and shelter would be hard to come by. Jesus knew her circumstances and He has compassion for her. He feels her grief. With this, He approaches the casket, lays His hands on the casket and tells the dead man to rise and he does and begins speaking. Jesus had compassion for this woman, Jesus restored her son. Person to person compassion and not that of deity to subject but person to person. Last week we talked about the Centurion s servant and Jesus telling him that his servant was healed by his great faith or the woman who hemorrhaged for 12 years and touched Jesus robe and was healed. Jesus told her it was by her faith she was healed. But today s lesson, Jesus says nothing of faith, Jesus performs this miracle out of pure compassion for this widow. Person to person. How should we look at this lesson? Person to person. Jesus places no requirement on this, He cares about what we do every day, cares about the toils and challenges and He feels our grief. He feels our pain. When we hurt, so does He. Today Jesus felt the grief of the widow and took action. So should we. When we come across someone grieving, someone in need we should extend our hand and aid in relieving that need or grief. Help them through a tough time and help them back onto their feet. If we recall from the letter from James, 2: What good is it, my brothers and sisters,[e] if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill, and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? 17 So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. It is not enough to be compassionate, we must also act. Remember in the book of James the example we are given. Faith without works is dead. If we see a brother in need and offer to pray without helping them, this is faith without works. We must act. Like faith without works is dead so is compassion without works. Christ demonstrated a marvelous and deep compassion for people, regardless of who they were, regardless of faith, regardless of social status, regardless of race or spiritual purity. So should we. Seek out someone this week, smile at them and share the

2 compassion of Christ. And then let s see what God leads us to become. Amen! Frits Bax opened with prayer at 9:05 Attica UMC Council Meeting Minutes May 7, 2016 Nine present: Frits Bax, Jerry and Sally Hudson, Harry Wilcox, Chuck Edwards, Kirk Watson, Pastor Ron and Carol Holtz and Paul Leone. Minutes from April meeting were read. Motion to accept as presented by Jerry H. 2nd by Chuck E. Approved. Christian Ed: Children on Sundays - numbers vary and we still need helpers for nursery. Begindergarten - 5 to 6. Available when Pam is able and she really needs back up volunteer. We have attracted new families from this so it is a vital part of our outreach. Tuesday evening Bible study is going well, Sunday morning is more small. Lunch with the Lord is also going well. Wednesday morning prayer group: 7 to 9 and very powerful. Filled with the Holy Spirit. Short coffee sharing time after. Food Bank: Getting less from food bank and Stone Soup. Need to find out why. Meier awarded us with the :Simply Give" cards again and they are available from Pastor Ron, or are located on the table in the fellowship hall. This is a great way to help the food bank and remember the June 3rd and 4th is "DOUBLE UP" week end and we get twice the awards dollars. $4, currently in account, but it constantly needs to be replenished. We are Blessed! Dinner at A.U.M.C. is still going and we still need cooks. Please see Kendra or Del. Donna Rouse has been Serve Safe Certified and Pam Wilcox will be getting Certified also. We would like at least one more person, if possible. It is done on line and we would by the $15.00 fee. Please see Kendra, Del or Carol Holtz if interested. UMW: Mother-Daughter Luncheon is May 7th and $5.00 Donation for a ticket is available. Trustees: Some siding was donated if we are interested for the garage at the rental house. It might do the two worst sides. Harry made a motion to allow up to $ at this time, for other materials needed to complete the task, Paul; second. Approved. Yard needs to be cleaned up and Paul asked for help in burning the brush pile. Those interested will meet there Tuesday AM. upper apartment still needs a stove. Harry made motion to spend up to $ for stove, Pastor Ron 2nd. Approved. We may need a 110 line put in. We will check. Attica UMC LINK 2015 Page 2

3 The rental roof shingles have been replaced that blew off and the roofer said the only other part that needs to be replaced is the flat roof. He will give us an estimate. Church building work still working on bids. Check work list for jobs and clean up that is needed. Any volunteer or group can help. Financial Report: Savings: Building $11, Memorial $20, Audit went well. We had a very good team that turned out to complete the audit. Pastor Ron will document and design a form to halp in the next audit. Upgrade for program for the church financials for out system runs $54.00 and is needed. Pastor made motion to purchase program, 2nd by Paul. Approved. First batch of matts and personal care items in back-packs has been delivered. Some food items and sock were also included. Second batch will go end of month. Homeless mission. Music Ministry - Still searching for back up for Pam. Keep that in mind if you know of anyone. Pastor/Parish Relations committee - No report, still has not met. Prayer Chain: Updated and work in progress. Reminder on how this works. Keep calling till you get a real person, but leave messages on those you don't reach personally. Dates for filling the pulpit: June 12th - Conference. Carol Holtz to fill. October - dates not yet on calendar. Michigan Conference will be attended by Pastor Ron and Donna Rouse and Frits Bax. Motion to adjourn by Frits, 2nd by Harry W. Approved. 4 Baby Bottle Campaign is Underway The 9 th Annual Baby Bottle Campaign is now underway running through Father s Day (June 19 th ). It s easy as ) Pick up a baby bottle 2) Fill it with change (or a check) 3) Turn it back in. And as with last year, all proceeds from the Campaign go the Pregnancy Resource Center of Lapeer. Item of the Month - June We continue to have great responses to the item of the month. These items are for the needs of the Food Bank which can t be obtained from the Eastern Michigan Food Bank.
