1 Shining the Light Welcoming. Growing. Caring. All with Joyous Hearts. Announcements for January 17, 2018 THIS SUNDAY AT ST. ANDREW'S 9:00 AM Worship & Annual Meeting 1:30 PM St. Andrew's Players Rehearsals 4:30 PM Girl Scout Troop 6896 READINGS FOR SUNDAY: The Third Sunday after the Epiphany Gospel: Mark 1:14-20 Scheduled to serve this Sunday as Lay Ministers and Counters ANNUAL MEETING & WORSHIP Our Annual Meeting is this Sunday, January 21. It begins with Worship at 9:00 a.m. downstairs in the large Undercroft. Worship is informal and during a portion of the service, children will be invited to the Chapel for singing and Godly Play. For those new to St. Andrew's, the Annual Meeting is a fun way to learn more about our many ministries and to celebrate all the ways we have experienced being St. Andrew's Church in the past year. New vestry members will be elected. Those nominated for the vestry are: Marc Hone, Jean Lynn, Ana White and Emily Armstrong. A time of food and fellowship follows Worship and the Annual Meeting. All are welcome! EPISCOPAL 101 Father Steve is conducting classes on the structure and beliefs of the Episcopal Church. The remaining sessions are on Monday evenings, January 22 and 29, beginning at 7:00 p.m. If persons want to know more about our church or want to be confirmed by Bishop Jones on Sunday, February 4, please consider attending these sessions. 9:00 am Prayer Leader: Libby Schollaert FAMILY MINISTRY SCOOP Server: Ana White Lector: Ruth Duvall Ushers: not filled not filled Chalice Bearer: John Seggerman Counters From last Sunday: In our Gospel story (John 1:43-51), a man named Philip found Jesus and when he realized he had found the Savior, he wanted to tell someone so he told his friend Nathanael. We learned that friends can help friends know God better. We also talked about how friends can help friends overcome prejudice as Philip did when he helped Nathanael see that people who might think may not have anything important to say, can change our lives. Family Discussion: How can we invite friends to share in our belief that "God Loves Everyone -- No Exceptions"? We learned that
2 Warren Duvall Steve Pearson Save the Date: Bishop's visitation on February 4, Quick Links: St. Andrew's Website from others so how can we "pay it forward"? Prayer Starter: Dear God, we thank you for people like Martin Luther King Jr who have dedicated their lives to sharing love and peace. Help us to share those messages and following the example of Philip, to share the goods news we hear and the love You give to us with our friends. Amen. Next S unday: As always, all children and youth are invited to participate and help the Family Service. During the Annual Meeting we will hold our own "annual meeting" and also make an "Alleluia" Banner as well as cards to include in the ASPAN bagged meals. Join us! Save the Date: Snow Tubing in February -- All families are welcome to join SAY on a snow tubing adventure at Whitetail Resort on Sunday, February 18 after the 10 am service. S.A.Y. :: This S unday: As always, all youth and children are invited to help and participate in the Chapel during the Annual Meeting this Sunday. 3 O n Friday, January 26, at 7:00 pm, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church will host Elisabeth von Trapp, granddaughter of Georg and Maria von Trapp of Sound of Music fame. Tours across the United States and in the family's beloved Austria have given Elisabeth well-deserved recognition for her own talents and personality. Boston Globe--"Before the concert is over she will have the crowd gasping with the sheer beauty of her voice."; New York Times--"Her voice is hauntingly clear and her lyrics tender and romantic."; Workingpoet--"Elisabeth von Trapp strikes the perfect balance between unity and eclecticism, between grace and edginess, between the heart and the head. It's time she receives the national recognition that she deserves...she shouldn't be anybody's best-kept-secret any longer." Although this is a free concert, a good will offering will be taken. Checks may be made out to Von Trapp Music. There will be a reception following the concert where guests can meet Ms. Von Trapp, as well as purchase CD's, and get autographs and pictures. Punch and finger foods provided by the parish will be served. Please sign up in the Central Hallway if you are able to contribute either cheese and crackers or cookies. BAGGED MEALS FOR THE HOMELESS: January 27 We will gather in the St. Andrew's kitchen at 4:00 PM on Saturday, January 27 to assemble 50 meals in support of ASPAN
4 (Arlington Street Peoples' Assistance Network). Many hands make quick work and we'd like to invite you to share our blessings and join us for about an hour as we spread the peanut butter and give thanks for all of the blessings afforded to us. All ages are welcome -- it's a great teaching moment for our young people. Meals are funded by the St. Andrew's Endowment for Outreach and Human Needs and we are grateful for that ongoing support. If you would like to volunteer to deliver the meals at 6:00 PM to the park on N. Oakland Street behind St. George's, please contact Jennifer Gowetski at jennifer_gowetski@yahoo.com. We would love to expand our volunteer base for this important ministry! In addition, we are looking for volunteers to coordinate the sandwich making on March 24 and May 26. It's not a difficult activity and we can provide all the details you'll need. Please contact Marcela Scott at marcela.scott@yahoo.com if you are interested in helping out on those two dates! We hope to see you in the kitchen. GLORIOUS COMPANIONS For our meeting at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 24, we'll be reading Chapter 2 of The Sacred Meal by Nora Gallagher. All are welcome. SOUL SISTERS: MONDAY, FEBRUARY 5 The next gathering of Soul Sisters will be on Monday, February 5, from 7:30 to 9 pm in the Chapel. Join your St. Andrew's Sisters in Christ as we welcome the New Year! MURDER MYSTERY BOOK CLUB RETURNS FOR A WINTER TREAT Our Summer Murder Mystery Book Club was so popular, we decided to bring it back for the winter! We'll next piece together the clues in "A Morbid Taste for Bones" by Ellis Peters, the first book in the Brother Cadfael series. We'll meet to discuss it on February 24 at Sarah Petcher's home at 2 p.m. We hope you can join us then!
