2 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018 I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. 2 Corinthians 12:9 OBSTACLES The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are [h]ard of face and obstinate of heart (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that [he] was amazed at their lack of faith (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Please Pray for the Repose of all souls, especially the Soul of Robert (Bob) Hill. May the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen. Poor Box Donations The St. Vincent de Paul Society uses donations from the poor box to help members of our community who are in need. Donations can be placed in the box near the doors at the front entrance of the Church. All donations are greatly appreciated. St. Kateri Tekakwitha The annual American Indian Cultural Mass will be held on Friday, July 13, 2018 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Grand Caillou. All are invited to attend. 4 My dear People of God, Today we celebrate the Fourteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time. The gospel reading for this Sunday, invites us to ponder and reflect on the gift of faith and especially what happens when we have it or when we don t have it. In human relations, it is said that familiarity breeds contempt meaning that we tend to have little respect and liking for people or things we know so well. We become too familiar and lose sight of the value inherent in the person or in something. That should not be the case, instead, the more we know someone or something, the more we should love and appreciate them. I recall when I had just moved here and began my studies at Notre Dame Seminary, one day we had a trip to St Joseph s Seminary College (St Bens) which is on the North shore of Lake Ponchartrain and so we had to drive across the bridge. When we got on the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway bridge my mind was blown away when we got to the middle of the bridge and couldn t see either shores of the Lake! Meanwhile, my friends who were ridding with me didn t see anything unusual. I told them that I had travelled to many many countries and places and had never seen anything like that. Later after a little research, we determined that the Causeway is actually one of the longest bridges in the world and certainly the longest in the United States! That is what familiarity does to us. In the gospel reading we have an account of Jesus going to his native town with his disciples and there he ministered at the Synagogue. His teaching must have been so powerful that, those who heard him were astonished. They asked themselves: What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands? It was evident to them that there was something special in Jesus Christ. However, instead of embracing Him and the Good News he brought, they took offense at Him! They asked: Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary,.. They allowed the circumstances of His life to obscure them from the ministry of Jesus. As a consequence of this, the gospel tells us that Jesus was amazed at their lack of faith and as a result He was not able to perform any mighty deeds there apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. At the end of the day, they were the losers. They missed out on the blessings of God in Christ Jesus because of their lack of faith. Last Sunday, Mark s gospel told us about a faith so powerful it could work miracles (daughter of Jairus raised from the dead and the woman who had suffered hemorrhages for twelve years was healed). This week, faith is absent and so are the miracles. It is therefore evident that there is a correlation between faith and the action of God. What is faith? The Letter to the Hebrews devotes chapter eleven (11) to the meaning of faith. There we read that, faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things unseen and by it men of old received divine approval.. (Heb ). Faith is about things hoped for and conviction of things unseen. It means that the call of faith is a call to rise above the circumstances. As Catholics, we know that the Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith. The Eucharist is the center of who and what we are. This great gift of the Eucharist is presented to us under the ordinary species of bread and wine. It is very easy for us to lose sight of the mystery of the Eucharist by getting lost in the bread and wine. Let us pray this week that the Lord may grant us the grace to grow and be strengthened in our faith. Fr Simon Peter
5 Reflections for Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018 Catholic Social Teaching: Solidarity We are one human family whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. We are our brothers and sisters keepers, wherever they may be. Today s scriptures remind us of the resistance which we might encounter when we try to preach and put into practice our faith. In living out the social teaching of the church we may encounter with Ezekiel those who are hard of face and obstinate of heart. With Paul we might encounter weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints. We might come to know what Jesus encountered in his native place: They took offense at him. Not everyone experiences their dignity as a person of God. The wealth of the world is not distributed fairly. Some people get greedy. Fighting and violence erupt. The poor continue to be left out. The environment of our planet continues to be abused. Finally, the social teaching of the church invites us to continue to grow in an awareness of how the values of the world may not be the values of our God. From this awareness we learn about ourselves and what we really believe. We can then work to make sure that our values are not destroyed by the values of the culture. We can work to promote those values that are really life giving for ourselves and our whole world. We can then be moved into action for justice and peace. We can work for a positive transformation of our world in the liberating spirit of Jesus the Christ. 6 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week s Treasure mentioned the Nuns of the Battlefield, religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the Nuns of the Battlefield stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
