Whether you re from down the street or from out of town, we re glad you re with us this morning. We welcome saints. We welcome sinners. We welcome those who are searching. We welcome the most seasoned Catholics and those Catholics coming home. We welcome those interested in learning more about the mysteries of the Faith, as well as those who have never stepped in a Catholic Church. We pray that your time with us this morning is filled with grace. Welcome! CHILDREN S LITURGY ARE AVAILABLE AT BOTH 9:00 AND 11:00 A.M. MASSES Want to focus on the message and the Mass? We can help. Children s Liturgy is also available. The priest will call the kids (K-2nd grade) after the opening prayer. Kids return to Mass during the offertory. HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THIS WEEKEND. Here are a few simple things you can do to get the most out of today. First: Read the readings on pages two and three. Read them once to merely get familiar with the text. Read them again, this time a little slower, and find word or phrase that tugs at your heart when you read. Ask yourself: What could God be saying to me through that word or phrase? Second: Ask yourself: What do I need from God this weekend? What do I need God to say to me today? Third: Listen attentively during the Readings and the homily. After the homily we ll stand for the Creed and the Prayers of the Faithful. Then, we ll sit for the offertory. When we sit and offer our tithing, ask yourself: What is the one thing God said to me during the Readings or the homily? Write that one thing in the box below: Fourth: Once you receive the Eucharist return to your seat and pray. Forget about everything else. Ask God to speak to you. Invite Him into your heart. Ask Jesus to fill your heart with a deep sense of His personal love for you. NEW TO REDEEMER? We re glad you re with us. Our hope is that you feel welcome and comfortable. 2 THE LITURGY OF THE WORD PENTECOST SUNDAY FIRST READING Acts 2:1-11 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God. RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 104:1, 24, 29-30, 31, 34 R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD, my God, you are great indeed! How manifold are your works, O LORD! the earth is full of your creatures R May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD be glad in his works! Pleasing to him be my theme; I will be glad in the LORD. R. If you take away their breath, they perish and return to their dust. When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. R. SECOND READING 1st Corinthians 12:3b-7, Brothers and sisters: No one can say, Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. 2

3 SEQUENCE GOSPEL John 20:19-23 Come, Holy Spirit, come! And from your celestial home Shed a ray of light divine! Come, Father of the poor! Come, source of all our store! Come, within our bosoms shine. You, of comforters the best; You, the soul s most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment here below; In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe. O most blessed Light divine, Shine within these hearts of yours, And our inmost being fill! Where you are not, we have naught, Nothing good in deed or thought, Nothing free from taint of ill. Heal our wounds, our strength renew; On our dryness pour your dew; Wash the stains of guilt away: Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray. On the faithful, who adore And confess you, evermore In your sevenfold gift descend; Give them virtue s sure reward; Give them your salvation, Lord; Give them joys that never end. Amen. Alleluia. On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, Peace be with you. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. 3

4 As we approach our 35th anniversary let s forge a plan that will help us grow into our 40th! INTRODUCING OUR PLANNING PROCESS. Established on September 15, 1982, Christ the Redeemer is quickly approaching our 35th anniversary. What better way to celebrate our past than to come together to forge a direction for our future! Let s celebrate our 35th by crafting a plan that will direct our growth into our 40th! A PLAN. PLANNING. THE PROCESS. Coming up with a plan is important; however, how we do so is equally as important. The process of planning is as important as the final draft of the five-year plan. If the planning is done well, the plan itself will not only meet our needs, but the process can bring our parish together for important conversations, listening, and learning. FIRST, THE POPE. NEXT, OUR BISHOPS. THEN OUR DIOCESE AND OUR PARISH. God Himself is leading us into our planning process. This call has permeated every aspect of the Catholic Church. u INTRODUCING CHRIST THE REDEEMER PLANNING PROCESS THE HOLY FATHER POPE FRANCIS. In 2013 Pope Francis released his Apostolic Exhortation entitled Joy of the Gospel. He urges each local church to look deep within for a resolute process of discernment, purification and reform. (no. 30) He urges each parish to develop a plan for forming disciples. WHAT S THE PROCESS? WHAT S THE TIMELINE? PHASE 1 l SUMMER 2018 Listening sessions PHASE 2 l FALL 2018 Developing an initial plan for the mission u Areas of emphasis: 1. Sunday 2. Formation Ministries 3. Major Life Moments (Baptisms, funerals, etc.) 4. Community PHASE 3 l EARLY 2019 Developing an initial plan for what we need to support the mission u Areas of emphasis, committees to be formed: 1. Communications 2. Personnel (leadership, volunteers, staffing, etc.) 3. Finances 4. Facilities PHASE 4 l SPRING 2019 Finalizing the plan; wedding phase 1 with phase 2 u Integrating our dreams for mission with the resources we need to support the mission PHASE 5 l LATE SPRING 2019 Preparing for presentation PHASE 6 l SUMMER 2019 Present the plan u Town Hall presentation at 6:30 pm LISTENING SESSIONS: SUMMER 2018 Listening sessions kick-off the planning process. It gives our steering committee an opportunity to listen to you. If the plan is going to serve us, it needs to meet our needs. u THE U.S. CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS. In March of 2017 the U.S. Bishops published a document entitled Living as Missionary Disicples. The document lays out a plan for evangelization and urges each diocese and parish to develop a plan for forming disciples. WHAT ARE THE QUESTIONS THAT WILL BE ASKED? QUESTION 1 l What s the best thing about Christ the Redeemer? What are our strengths? QUESTION 2 l Where do we need to improve? QUESTION 3 l What are your dreams for our parish? u OUR BISHOP, OUR DIOCESE. In his June 4, 2017 Address to the Diocese delivered on the 40th anniversary of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, Bishop Shelton Fabre laid out his vision for the next chapter of our diocese s history. He urged each parish to develop a plan for forming disciples. NOW IS THE TIME. The Holy Father is urging. Our U.S. Bishop are asking. Bishop Fabre is calling. Now is that time for us to develop a plan for how we intentionally form disciples. WHAT ARE WE DOING WITH THE ANSWERS? We ll tabulate all answers and organize feedback by themes. We ll have a report shortly after Easter. 5 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUSDid you know? REACHING THOSE WHOSE STORY YOU LL NEVER HEAR FROM THE MEDIA DID YOU KNOW? Since 2014, the Knights of Columbus Christian Refugee Relief Fund has donated more than $13 million for humanitarian assistance in Iraq, Syria and the surrounding region. The Christian Refugee Relief Fund is providing aid to Christians persecuted by ISIS. CHRIST THE REDEEMER KNIGHTS Our Knight of Columbus are selling tickets for their annual chicken dinner fund-raiser. Dinner plates included baked chicken, rice dressing, corn, coleslaw, and bread. They are $8 each and can be picked up on Sunday, June 10, 2018 between 11:00 a and 1:00 p. Tickets can be purchased through any member of the Knights of Columbus and after all Masses. VACATION BIBLE CAMP Bible Camp Registration is now open! The theme of this year s VBS is Shipwrecked: Jesus Rescues. We invite all kids ages 4-12 to venture onto an uncharted island where kids will be anchored in the truth that Jesus carries them through life s storms! Camper registration forms (for children 4-12) are available in the information center. Children must be 4 by September 30th. We are seeking adult volunteers 21+ and teen volunteers 13+ to help with Vacation Bible School. Volunteer forms are also available in the back of church. For more information, contact Rebecca Abboud. ANNOUNCEMENTS CCD REGISTRATION CCD Registration forms for the year are due on Friday, May 25th. For more information, please contact Rebecca Abboud at our church office. DIOCESAN ORDINATIONS The Rev. Mr. Brett Lapeyrouse and the Rev. Mr. Patrick Riviere will be ordained to the transitional diaconate on Saturday, May 26th at 10.00a at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral. On Saturday, June 2nd at 10.00a, The Rev. Mr. Paul Birdsall and Deacon Joey Lirette will be ordained to the priesthood at the Cathedral of St. Francis de Sales in Houma. All are invited to join us in celebrating these upcoming ordinations. VACATION BIBLE CAMP If you would like to make a donation to Vacation Bible Camp, please visit our donation station in the back of church.
