1 VOLUME #18 ISSUE 30 THE SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 29, 2018 Comforting the Suffering Through Unity In this Sunday s responsorial psalm, the psalmist says to the Lord that The eyes of all look hopefully to you, / and you give them their food in due season; / you open your hand / and satisfy the desire of every living thing. Beautifully illustrating one of the themes contained in this weekend s readings, this stanza reminds us that we need to trust in the Lord as he will provide for all of our needs at the time that he knows will be best for us. The Lord often works through others to do this, which can be seen in the first reading where a man brings the prophet Elisha food that did not appear to be enough for all but was still given to the people to eat. Also, in the Gospel, Christ multiplies five barley loaves and two fish for a large crowd, which had about five thousand men without counting the women and children who could have also been there, after first receiving this small amount of food from a boy. What is miraculous in both stories is that even though there is an insufficient amount of food to begin with, there is a surplus of food remaining once everyone has had there share. The Gospel even states that all had their fill before Jesus commands his disciples to collect what remained as there had been more than they could eat. Both of these readings lead us to realize that the Lord will surely be generous in bestowing our needs upon us. While this message of the Lord always providing is always good to hear, I think that this is something we commonly hear. When someone is in need or in some sort of suffering, one of the most commonly said things to that person is that the Lord will provide and end their struggles. In comforting others with these words, we want to assure them that there is hope in the future, but we must also remember that from their perspective this trust in the Lord may be difficult to hold onto in their times of trial. Upon reflecting on the first reading and the Gospel once again, we can notice that the miracles of the overabundance of food springs forth from a unity of persons. This union can be seen in the first reading with Elisha being offered the food out of his union with the man and commanding it to be given to the people out of his union with them whom the Lord desired to provide for. Likewise, in the Gospel, Christ receives the food that he multiplies from the boy out of his union with him and freely gives it to the large crowd out of his union with each individual person in it. We must remember that when comforting those in need, the Lord can provide comfort to them through our union with each of those suffering individuals. This is why we should strive to live in solidarity with those who are in need, and we can do this by simply visiting them, asking them how their day is going, and offering assistance to them in even the smallest ways. From these charitable acts that can come about only by being in union with the suffering, the Lord can generously bestow upon them all that they desire. The hope that we want to give them in comforting them can truly be given from this unity that makes visible the love that we have for one another. With this in mind, let us pray that we can live how St. Paul asks us, which is with with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace. This is a change from the schedule that was handed out at the end of the year. The first CCD class for 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 11th grade students will be Monday, September 10, and classes will run from 7-8:15pm for 6-9th grade, and 7-8:30pm for 11th grade. The first CCD class for K-5th grades will be Tuesday, Sept. 11, and classes will run from 6-7pm. 10th grade classes will be on Monday nights from 7-8:30pm starting in January. All classes will take place in the Parish Center. CCD PARENT MEETING: **All Parents are asked to attend a very important parent meeting on the first night of CCD class in Church. BIBLE STUDY - "THE GOSPEL OF JOHN": A Bible Study, "The Gospel of John," is on Wednesdays in the Parish Center after the 8am Mass. There is no cost to attend these sessions, and everyone is invited. UPDATE ON SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING FOR ADULT VOLUNTEERS If you have not updated your Safe Environment Certificate you are not allowed to do any volunteering with the youth until you do so. Please go on the website to renew your certificate as soon as possible. These new certificates will be valid through June 30, The Safe Environment Training website address is office does need a new Volunteer Ministry Application on file even if you have previous certification. The applications can be found on the shelves at the entrance of the Church and at the Office. The lesson is still Protecting Children in the 21s Century. The content, however, has been updated. There will be no in-house training. You must have a Safe Environment Certificate on file with St. Ann's Administration Office before you can work with any youth in any ministry in St. Ann Parish.
