INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Faith Without Works is Dead A watch may have a gold chain, but if it does not tell the me it is useless. A fruit tree may be teeming with blossoms, but if it does not produce fruit, it is useless. A lamp may be studded with diamonds, but if it does not give light it is worthless. A faith that does not result in good works is dead. The fruit of prayer is faith. The fruit of faith is love. The fruit of love is service. And the fruit of service is peace. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In this country, we don t name our churches The Fourth Avenue Catholic Church, but rather seek a patron saint or mystery of faith. We inherit this tradition from an old Roman custom via medieval England. Interestingly, that has not been the practice elsewhere, and parishes abroad often do carry just the name of the neighborhood. In Ireland, the Roman (English) practices didn t take hold, and so churches are known simply by the street they are on, or by a nickname. Saint Francis of Assisi in Dublin is often called Adam and Eve after a pub in the same street. The pub sign is an interesting carving of our first parents, so they become patrons by default. Increasingly in the United States, we are seeing a familiar European pattern emerge when a few churches, each bearing the name of a patron saint or mystery, are gathered into one parish that bears a different name. Thus, we might hear of a parish of Midvalley City comprised of Saint Mary, Saint Francis, and Saint Ursula churches. Once a church has been consecrated, its name may not normally be changed. Therefore, when parishes are merged, a new name is given to the parish, which may or may not be that of a heavenly patron, but the church buildings retain their names. In the process, we have lost sight of some worthy patrons of old, but have also seen new parishes open dedicated to twentieth-century saints like Edith Stein, Katharine Drexel, and Mother Teresa. 4 My Dear People of God, Today we celebrate, the Twenty Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time. It is amazing how me is flying by so fast. Soon, the holy seasons of Advent and Christmas will be upon us! In the gospel reading today, Jesus poses the ques on: Who do you say that I am? This is a ques on that should come to us every day of our lives. Many of us know and are convinced that Jesus is God, that He is Son of God, that He is the Redeemer and Savior. That is why we come to Church, that is why we have crosses in our cars and homes, that is why we pray etc. But our intellectual convic ons must be translated into the ac ons in our daily lives especially as we relate to one another. This understanding should bring our a en on to the second reading, from the Le er of St. James. This le er wants to push us to act out our faith in our lives, to manifest or to show the faith so that that we may not have it only in our hearts and in our minds. The apostle James is convinced that our ac ons are really important more important than our words. St. James is concerned about social ac ons, about not proclaiming the Gospel to someone who has nothing without offering them something. To illustrate this, let me relate a story of Mrs. Clo le Thibodaux who received news that her neighbor was seriously ill. In response Clo le said to the person who brought her the news, I am so sorry to hear that, tell her that I will remember her in my prayers, and that I hope she will soon be feeling be er. And Clo le was as good as her word. Later that evening, as she said her prayers she prayed very sincerely and fervently for her neighbor. In her prayer she said to God: Lord I want to commend my neighbor to you. She s very seriously ill. She needs a lot of help, a lot of support. When she finished her prayers, she felt be er but there was something bothering her. When she went to sleep, she had a dream in which she found herself in dialogue with God. The Lord said to her: I can see you are concerned about your neighbor and she is in great need of help. You know what she needs most is someone to spend me with her and to help with the li le things she cannot do for herself. In response, Clo le said: Lord, you are absolutely right. In fact, that is exactly what I was thinking when the news came to me. Then the Lord went on to ask Clo le: So when you were praying that your neighbor needs a lot of help and support, were you expec ng me to come down and do it? At that, Clo le woke up and she knew exactly what she needed to do! My dear brothers and sisters, St James today reminds and challenges us that if our faith does not manifest in our ac ons, then it is a dead faith. We are all familiar with the greatest commandment: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself (Mathew 22:35-37). This commandment in essence sums up what St James is telling us today. In other words, Love the Lord your God and let that love of God, manifest itself in the way you love your neighbor. St. James challenges us to demonstrate our faith using our ac ons. As we go into this new week, like Clo le, where and how is the Lord invi ng and challenging us to demonstrate our faith? Thanks and God bless

5 September 16, 2018 Catholic Social Teaching: Solidarity We are one human family whatever our national, racial, ethnic, and ideological differences. Our love for all our sisters and brothers demands that we promote peace in a world surrounded by violence and conflict. The letter of James clearly and emphatically reminds us that our faith must be put into practice. Faith without works is dead. People of faith cannot ignore the needs of those without food or clothing or shelter. People of faith have a special concern for those who are poor or struggling. People of faith must address the needs of the environment (our common home). People of faith cannot ignore the inequalities that are built into our economic and social structures. People of faith cannot be afraid to ask the difficult questions. Otherwise, our faith is a sham. The servant song from Isaiah challenges us to be determined and committed in the midst of difficulty and to be dedicated to what we believe even in the midst of opposition. We live in a culture where we often encounter values different than our Christian values. The needs and perspective of the poor are often ignored. The faith in practice described by James in the second reading is not always the value of our dominate culture. People of faith cannot ignore the needs of those without food or clothing or shelter or health care. People of faith have a special concern for those who are poor or struggling. Otherwise our faith is a sham. Jesus seems to be making a similar point when he tells Peter You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do. The vision of Jesus, the vision of God, is not always identical to that of our dominate culture. People of faith cannot ignore the needs of those without food and clothing or shelter or homecare. People of faith have a special concern for those who are poor or struggling. People of faith cannot be blind to the countless refugees who are fleeing danger and poverty. People of faith focus on the common good. Otherwise our faith is a sham. Sometimes, as with Jesus, we will encounter opposition, struggle and suffering as we try to live out this faith. Jesus is the one who is in solidarity with all those who are living the experience of poverty and powerlessness and with all those who are struggling for justice. Registration deadline: September 30, 2018 Blue Mass: On September 27, 2018 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral, Bishop Shelton Fabre will preside at the annual Blue Mass, wherein we pray for police, firefighters, emergency-responders and military personnel. We encourage all members of these agencies to join us for this celebra on, at which we will pray in par cular that God will bestow eternal life upon agency members who have died since the last Blue Mass. All of the Faithful and families of agency members are invited as well to take part in this celebra on. How are they related? The Suffering Servant of Isaiah undergoes much distress and ridicule, but is able to bear it because he has listened to the promptings of God day after day. The psalm tells us that God listens, too. God hears our prayers for help and is always ready to save us. As our faith deepens, so does our desire to do the works of justice and charity that build up the reign of God. God directs our actions in ways we often cannot see, and we don t always see the results. The Diocese of Houma Thibodaux plans to send 3 buses of youth in grades to this event. The cost is $850 per person. A non-refundable deposit of $500 per person is due September 19 th. Fundraisers can be held to help defray the cost. Contact Miss Bernadette for more information. Trunk or Treat St. Bridget will host its 2 nd Annual Trunk or Treat, Sunday, October 28 th from 4 6 pm. Save the date and plan to attend this afternoon of fun and fellowship with your parish family. Please plan to decorate your vehicle or a 10x10 tent and bring pre-wrapped goodies for trick or treating. More details will be in future bulletins. CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS CORNER Catholic women age 18 and above are encouraged to attend the September Salad Social with the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Thursday, September 13 th from 6:30 8:00 pm in the Community Life Annex. Members are asked to bring a salad or dessert for the meeting and Installation of Officers. State Treasurer Becky Shilling will be in attendance at the meeting. Often times, CDA members are asked, what does the court do or where does the money go. Below is a description of 4 of the national CDA projects in which the local court participates. Habitat for Humanity CDA works with Habitat for Humanity to provide houses for needy families. CDA has helped build 32 homes since 1995; three of these homes are in Louisiana Holy Rosary Family Supports family prayer especially the Rosary. CDA has supported this ministry since 1977 The Laboure Society Provides financial help to religious communities SOAR (Support our Aging Religious) Provides financial support to frail members of Catholic religious congregations since 1986 Traffic Safety Please drive slowly and cautiously on the church grounds. Vehicles should enter the property from Hwy 311 and exit onto Hwy 24 on Mondays due to Youth Formation (CCD).
