That is one of those days like the assassination of President Kennedy or Pearl Harbor that we always remember where we were when we heard the news. Next Sunday, September 17th, after the 9:30AM Mass at hospitality, we will draw the winner of the 50/50. I would like to thank Bob and Maureen Sullivan and their team for the fine work in selling the tickets all summer. This year s St. Francis pet blessing will be at 1 PM on October 8th. Please bring your pet to the front of the church. Our prayers at this time of year are for our wonderful catechists and members of the catechetical program who donate their time to teach our children the ways of faith. Our Consolation Ministry is looking for new members. Consolation ministers assist with preparing and joining in the liturgy for deceased parishioners. Please let them each be guided by Your love and Your wisdom, always looking for the common good. The Eucharist When we receive Jesus in the Eucharist, we should be approaching Him with happy hearts and faces. When we receive Jesus in the Blessed sacrament, may our demeanor reflect our hearts of thanksgiving. (Happy, smiling faces as we receive Jesus Himself!) Respect Life In these difficult times in which we live, we ask that all world leaders will come to understand the sanctity of every life. Mother Mary, we ask for your intercession as we ask you to pray that hearts will be changed even the most hardened ones. Please keep us always praying for peace and for healing. The Rosary is our most powerful weapon. Let s pray for Life. Words from Pope Francis... A Christian is never bored or sad. Rather, the one who loves Christ is full of joy and radiates joy. (Isaiah 46:4) Wisdom and Works of Mercy Study Group One of the keys to understanding the communion with the Most Holy Trinity, which we have been made for, is to rediscover who God is. If we don t know the true face of God, that He is rich in mercy (Ephesians 2:4), then we won t fully enter into a relationship with Him. Everything hangs on this: that we know that God is mercy, and to be a witness to the infinite mercy of God, and totally trust in Him. 6 September 10, 2017 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 6 SAINT MARK S YOUTH MINISTRY FAITH FORMATION relform@verizon.net Registration for our classes for Levels1 through 9, for the Catechetical Year continues. Children entering first grade in school need to be registered at this time to prepare over two years for the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Children then continue with each level, growing in our faith and leading to the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation in the first year of high school. We also welcome any new families to our parish, families with older children and teens who may not have received any of our sacraments, and also children and teens with special needs. Registrations will be taken following our 9:30 Mass on Sunday September 10 and you may also (relform@verizon.net) with any questions or concerns. You may also visit the Faith Formation Office Monday through Friday beginning at 9:30 a.m. Please call or if these times are not convenient for you to arrange for another time. Our classes begin the week of September 18 so plans are underway. Our Youth Ministry Leaders will gather this Monday, September 11 at 7 p.m. in the Music room to plan for our upcoming year and for our Youth Ministry Information Night on Monday, September 18 beginning at 7 p.m. Those teens receiving the sacrament of Confirmation on October 19 will begin their last four classes this Wednesday, September 13 with a choice of times of 4:30 to 6 or 7 to 8:30. As our entire parish community supports all preparing for sacraments, please keep these young women and men in your prayers during these last months of their preparation for the sacrament. Those who are new to the Catechetical Ministry will gather for continued formation on Thursday, September 14 at 7:00 prior to the start of our classes. FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN 7 TH THROUGH 12 TH GRADES SAVE THE DATES! YOUTH MINISTRY INFORMATION NIGHT MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 18-7 P.M. 8 September 10, 2017 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 8 MUSIC NOTES Welcome back to fall! How was your summer? Weather-wise, there s not much to complain about except for a rainy day here and there, it was a beautiful summer. However, what was going on outwardly may not be what was going on in our lives. For some, their summer may have been filled with many happy, joyful moments; for others, their days may have been heavy with grief, sadness, and fear. Wherever your hearts were, I pray that you felt God s presence in the midst of it all. Our Music Ministry groups are winding their way back to full swing beginning this weekend. The Contemporary Ensemble will, once again, be providing the music at the 9:30 Masses and the Adult Choir will be at the 11:30 Mass. Both groups began their rehearsals this past week. Rehearsals for the Children s and Teen Choirs will begin this Thursday, September 14, to prepare for their first Masses. The Teen Choir will sing their first Teen Mass of the school year at the 5pm Saturday on October 14 and the Children s Choir will sing their first Mass of the school year at the 9:30 Sunday Mass on October 15. As always, our Music Ministry encourages anyone with musical interest or curiosity to give us a try! With the variety of music groups, I think you and/or your children will find a musical home here. I deeply thank our Cantors - Alyssa Arbuiso, Donna Cosentino, Nora Higgins, Pat Johnson, Stella Losquadro, Gina Mingoia, and Jennifer Searing (currently attending college in New Jersey) - for musically holding down the fort while the music groups took their summer break. These wonderful ladies are so dedicated to this ministry and our parish community is indeed blessed with their generosity of time and talent. I would also like to thank my sidekick, Vilma Barsauskiene, our accompanist, for her endless patience and support. Her behind-the-scenes backing is so much appreciated. One of the tasks that needs to be done every few weeks or so is to choose music for the liturgies. My guide has always been the standards set forth by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship, first published in 1972 and the latest edition published in Starting with this article, I would like to share with you some elements of this document. But first, as with every beginning, it is important to understand why we do what we do and this document eloquently describes the role of music in our worship. In the first chapter, it beautifully states: I. WHY WE SING 1. God has bestowed upon his people the gift of song. God dwells within each humanperson, in the place where music takes its source. Indeed, God, the giver of song, is present whenever his people sing his praises. 2. A cry from deep within our being, music is a way for God to lead us to the realm of higher things. As St. Augustine says, Singing is for the one who loves. Music is therefore a sign of God s love for us and of our love for him. In this sense, it is very personal. But unless music sounds, it is not music, and whenever it sounds, it is accessible to others. By its very nature song has both an individual and a communal dimension. Thus, it is no wonder that singing together in church expresses so well the sacramental presence of God to his people. One thing I know is that St. Mark s is a singing parish. Your robust participation at Mass is truly music to our ears (please pardon the pun!). It means we, musicians, are accomplishing our basic duty of getting our parish community to sing. The highest level that we always we strive for and what our ministry calls for us to do is the facilitation of our communal and personal prayers to God through music so that, in words and in song, we, as a community, are fully, actively, and consciously participating in the liturgy. We bring our deepest hopes and desires to Him and, ultimately, give glory, honor, and praise to the God who saved and continues to save us. Together as one, we raise our voices in worship! (Psalm 139: 13) (As we mentioned last Sunday, we are going to present the development of a precious little one in the womb through his or her perspective. So, each month for the next nine months we ll hear from the womb exactly what s going on!! We begin with these words from our little guy or gal.) I m here!! I m ready for my journey!! At the moment I was conceived, a new and unrepeatable human being came into the world Me! (I know, I sound a little mature for my age, but just go along with me, ok?) I m complete, with my own unique DNA. My gender, hair color, and eye color are already determined, I begin my life as a singe cell gliding down the fallopian tube in my Mommy s body. (Whee!!) In just a few days I will snuggle into the lining of my Mommy s womb, where I will be nurtured for nine months. After I m born, I ll play a special role within my own family and my community (a role only I can fulfill ). All I need now is time, nourishment, and most of all, love. Would you pray for me and my Mommy and Daddy?
