4 December 23, 2018 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 4 Thought for the Week Here we are at the fourth Sunday of Advent. The last candle on the Advent wreath represents Love. (Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God because God is love. (John 4:7-8) The Eucharist When we come to the Blessed Sacrament, we come to Bethlehem. The Virgin shall be with child...they shall call Him Emmanuel. (Matthew 1:23) And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah...from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people. (Matthew 2:6) Jesus chose the name Emmanuel, a name which means, God is with us, and chose to be born in Bethlehem, a name which means, house of bread, to let us know that in the Blessed Sacrament, the Loving Bread came from down from Heaven. He continues to dwell with us here on earth. When we come to the Blessed Sacrament, we come to Bethlehem. (Biblical Reflections on the Eucharist...Catholic Online) Words from Pope Francis May we be in this world a ray of that light which shone forth from Bethlehem, bringing joy and peace to the hearts of all men and women. Respect Life Christmas is God in human language. It is not simply about the birth of a child, but rather the coming of the One who will preach the Sermon on the Mount, instruct us by parables, and establish His Church. This is why it makes no sense to welcome the Child, but reject His teachings. There can be no such thing as a pro choice Christian. (from: Pro Life Reflections for Every Day.) 6 December 23, 2018 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 6 (Faith Formation Continued) FAITH FORMATION relform@verizon.net Lynn Fein, Director Registration for our Catechetical Year continues. It is certainly not too late and we are always happy to welcome you back or to welcome any newcomers. Please contact the Faith Formation Office to register your child. We are also always happy to take registrations following our Sunday s 9:30 Mass. Upon registering, families will be provided with details concerning our new online registration fee payment. Children who are currently in First Grade should be registered now to begin the two year preparation for the reception of the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Children then continue with each level, growing in their faith and love of the Lord. The schedule for our Faith Formation classes is very family friendly, offering both afternoon and evening times for each level. We are always happy to hear from any families who would like to find out more about our parish offerings which enable the children, teens, parents and grandparents opportunities to increase their faith and grow closer to the Lord. We offer weekly formation for children and teens, a Liturgy of the Word for children at our 9:30 Sunday Mass year round, preparation for the sacraments of Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation, a summer Vacation Bible Camp, a Youth Group and Youth Masses followed by get-togethers for seventh through twelfth graders, service opportunities for our young people, discussion and sharing for parents and grandparents and seasonal events for the entire parish. If your child has any special needs at all we will work with you to provide the very best learning environment. We are also happy to welcome any families with children who may have been delayed in receiving the sacraments. You are invited to call or the Faith Formation Office to discover the many ways your family can be involved, or to register your children for our classes. Preparation for a lifetime of receiving the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist is currently taking place in our Level 2 classes. Having the opportunity to meet with our Level 2 parents over the last two months, allowed me to witness their deep faith and relationship with Jesus, along with their strong desire to pass on our Catholic faith to their children. The parents, learning from the moment they first presented their child for Baptism that they are the primary religious educators of their children, are so grateful for the support they receive from our parish. I personally wish to extend my thanks to our Level 2 Catechists-Gretchen Alessi, Lisa Geraghty, Roseann Segura and Ann Marie Yantsos-who meet with the children weekly and who help to ensure that the children are well prepared to receive the Lord s forgiveness for the first time in the sacrament of Reconciliation and for their initial reception of the Lord in the Eucharist. Please continue to keep our Level 2 children in your prayers as they and their parents celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation on January 26. SAINT MARK S YOUTH MINISTRY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN 7 TH THROUGH 12 TH GRADES FAITH FORMATION DIRECTOR MRS. LYNN FEIN OR relform@verizon.net Our Youth group meets on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 in our parish center. Our next gatherings will be on January 7 th, 14 th and 28 th. We invite all young people from seventh through twelfth grades to join us and to bring a friend, as we share about our faith through discussions, activities and service projects. The group members and leaders wish all of our parishioners a joyous Christmas and blessed New Year. We are so truly grateful to everyone who continues to keep our youth leaders and the young people in their prayers. Due to the loving efforts of our youth, the people of Haiti will be the beneficiaries of messages of hope and peace which the teens placed on beautiful banners. The completion of this project followed a viewing of a video showing the people of Haiti and the efforts to provide much needed assistance to them. Our thanks once again to Marianne Scherl, one of our dedicated youth leaders and also a retired nurse, who will be traveling to Haiti in January to provide medical care and supplies, along with the banners.
