4 April 2, 2017 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 4 Thought For This Week Forgiveness means that God, who sees things as they really are, looking at a man or women s life, and seeing in each day repeatedly, year after year, the moments of selfishness, blindness, insensitivity, so that in His eyes our lives would seem things of horror, sees now that His Son has intervened repeatedly and at great cost to cover every evil moment with His Precious Blood. Where there was a serious sin, there Christ has planted His Cross. (from: Ways of Forgiveness How to Let Forgiveness Set You Free.) Respect Life Prayer Holy Spirit, give us the mind of Christ that we may never cast off any human person, or group of people, but rather be vehicles of Your care for them. (Pro Life Reflections for Every Day) The Eucharist Eucharistic communion is not a private devotion our individual reception of Jesus for our own isolated benefit. We come to communion to include ourselves among the you for whom Christ s body is given and His blood is shed. We come together as the Body of Christ, the community which is the sacrament of Christ s presence in the world, and we receive Jesus not as isolated individuals, but precisely as members of His Body. The Tradition of the Church makes it clear that the Eucharist is for the deepening of the unity of the Church. As Pope John Paul reminds us, It is...important to be ever mindful that communion with Christ is deeply tied to communion with our brothers and sisters. (Dies Domini, no 44) (From: Is Jesus Really Present in the Eucharist? By Bishop Michael Evan) Words from Pope Francis I prefer a church which is bruised, hurting, and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a church which is unhealthy from being confined clinging to its own security. A Scripture to Ponder.. Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance, but the LORD sees into the heart. (Samuel: 16:7)
5 April 2, 2017 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 5 (Continued from Page 4) Just a Thought. When we seek forgiveness we come to God for judgement. And God does judge us, and He pronounces his verdict. This word will stand for all eternity, and He will never judge the past again. And His verdict is - not guilty. From: Ways of Forgiveness How to Let Forgiveness Set you Free Just a Little Humor Little Kid s Spinach Plan: Divide into piles. Rearrange again into new piles. After five or six maneuvers, sit back and say you re full. FAITH FORMATION Our next Youth Ministry gathering for all young people in seventh through twelfth grades is this Monday, April 3 from 7 to 8:30 in the parish center. All are welcome to join us and to bring a friend. Our Level 7 Parents will be coming together this Wednesday, April 5 at 7 p.m. or Friday, April 7 at 10 a.m. Our two year preparation for the teens reception of Confirmation provides several opportunities for the parents to come together and share ways they can partner with us in raising their daughter or son in our faith. Please keep the young people in Level 7 in your prayers as they participate in their retreat this weekend. Our parish celebrates the sacrament of Baptism monthly, usually on the third Saturday of the month. Since the third Saturday falls on Holy Saturday this year, our Baptisms will be next Saturday, April 8. We always assure the families that they will be warmly welcomed by all of us here, as they present their child for this sacrament of initiation. Our next gatherings are on the following Mondays: April 3, May 1 (when we will have a special night of service opportunities), May 22 and June 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the parish center. We invite our young people to join us and to bring a friend. Please also mark your calendar for our next Youth Mass, Saturday April 22 at 5 p.m. followed by a get-together in our parish center with food and fun. 7 April 2, 2017 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 7 Dear Friends: It has been a great gift for me to have been named your Bishop and I am humbled and filled with gratitude for the support and welcome that you have shared with me. During these initial visits with our parishes, schools and ministries, I have enjoyed being able to meet so many of you and I look forward to continuing to connect with, and serve, all of our people in the coming months and years ahead. What I have repeatedly heard is how much you all love and care for our church; I know that together we will continue to dedicate our lives to Jesus and the mission of the Catholic Church. It is during this Lenten season that we are especially reminded of Pope Francis words that, Mercy is the beating heart of the Gospel and the Church s Mission. Our local Catholic Ministries Appeal is a wonderful way for each of us to hear and respond to His Holiness message. With one donation, the annual Catholic Ministries Appeal allows each of us to help a wide variety of people as it supports our church s efforts in evangelization, liturgy and worship. It enables the continuation and growth of our youth and young adult ministries and cares for our poor and disadvantaged neighbors. It also supports religious education programs and the formation and vocations for our Seminarians and our Deacons. This Lent, I ask that you join with me in supporting our Mission of Mercy by contributing to the Catholic Ministries Appeal. My own sincere thanks will be joined to the gratitude of more than 600,000 people who will benefit deeply for your kindness and generosity. Thank you for all that you do and know that I look forward to walking with you on this journey as we work together to help build God s Kingdom in our community and beyond. I will keep you and your family in my Masses and prayers. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend John O. Barres Bishop of Rockville Centre

10 April 2, 2017 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 10 FAITH FORMATION As we draw closer to Holy Week and take advantage of the many opportunities in our parish which enable us to grow in our faith during this Lenten season, I particularly wish to extend my thanks to those families who decided to join us at our Lenten Parish Family Gathering. Certainly as parents and grandparents put aside any regularly scheduled activities to be with us, an example of the importance of finding times to nourish our faith and to be in the company of our parish family served as an example to the children. Everyone is always so happy to have Father Jeff join us as he leads us in prayer, seeks responses to his thought-provoking questions from the children present and makes a special point of going from table to table to greet the families and thank them for coming. We were also blessed to have our Confirmation candidates from both Levels 7 and 8 with us, volunteering their precious time and gifts to assist the children, parents and me in making sure everything goes smoothly. Their decision to commit to the preparation time for reception of the sacrament and the desire to form a lifetime of service to others is always clearly evident. Their awareness of putting God first in their lives and then seeing to the needs of others has been so lovingly nurtured by their parents and Catechists. Of course this growth in faith is truly made possible by the teens participation at weekly Mass which provides those moments of growth through the readings, the Gospel, the support of the gathered community, the inspirational words of our priests in the Homily and most importantly by their reception of the Eucharist. Lent brings a perfect time to participate in a retreat which two groups, our Level 2 children and their parents, as well as our Level 7 Confirmation candidates have been offered the opportunity to do. Last Sunday those children who will be joining us at the table of the Lord shortly and their parents celebrated Mass with us, and then came together to discuss the meaning of Eucharist, share Bible stories and children s stories with a Eucharistic theme, and participate in both discussions and activities. Our prayers together included a guided meditation followed by revealing how we truly felt the Lord s presence. Once again, we were so happy to have Father Jeff stop by to address the parents and children as the day for the children s first reception of the sacrament so quickly approaches. We also expressed out thanks to a wonderful, hard-working group of Confirmation candidates who so lovingly assisted the children and their parents. This weekend the teens preparing for Confirmation are joining us at our 11:30 Mass followed by their retreat in the center. Two retreats are a part of the young people s preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation, one while they are participants in our Level 7 and one immediately before the celebration of Confirmation when they are in ninth grade. The retreats provide a variety of experiences that enable the girls and boys to accept our faith for themselves, with a clear understanding of what it means to be a Catholic. Small group and larger group activities are planned, along with discussions, prayer experiences and sharing of Scripture and its application to the daily lives of teens in today s world. Father Jeff s presence will once again be welcomed as he affirms the young people for immersing themselves totally in this preparation time. How greatly our own faith is enriched as we witness the faith of our young parishioners and their families. In the peace of Christ Lynn Fein Director of Faith Formation
11 April 2, 2017 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 11 Stations of the Cross St. Mark RC Church 105 Randall Road, Shoreham The most dramatic moment in all of history was when a people, without understanding what they were about to do, put Jesus, the Son of God, to death. It was a terrible way to die. Jesus knew full well what it was. He went willingly, a testament to love and forgiveness that has reverberated for 2,000 years. St. Mark s will present the Stations of the Cross Good Friday, April 14 th at 7:30 pm in the Church We will use film clips from the movie, The Passion, by Mel Gibson, combined with prayer and music. It is a powerful reminder for us of what happened to Jesus on that day. These stations are deeply moving, filled with meaning and at times, hard to watch. Still, watch we must, for it tells the story we need to be reminded of during the Lenten season. This presentation is not recommended for children under 13 years old.
