That s the day when some lucky winner will walk away with a nice amount of money from our 50/50 raffle. Guess what? I have a special project which our half of the money will fund. I ll tell you soon what it is. It was actually suggested to me by one of the trustees of the parish. Recently, one of our parishioners who is a publicschool teacher suggested we have a Chinese Auction and Talent Show as a fund-raiser. It struck me as a unique idea. We re going to try it. If you can donate anything or know someone who can, let me know. Also, if you have any special talents, we d be interested in seeing that, too. My favorite Formed article is one by Fr. Robert Spitzer, SJ on God and the Creation of The Universe, since I m interested in astronomy. It is the most convincing argument for God s existence that I have read. We rely on our faith, but it s fun to read. Fr. 4 August 19, 2018 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 4 Thought for the Week When we come to Mass and listen to God s Word in the readings, we should ask the Lord to have those readings make an impression on our hearts. Sometimes it will be an idea, but it could also be just one word. Our task is to listen and ask the Lord to make a deposit in each of our hearts. God s Word can truly transform us, if we prayerfully listen. The Eucharist a Prayer O Jesus, concealed in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar, my only love and mercy, I commend to You all the needs of my body and soul. You can help me, because You are Mercy itself. In You lies all my hope. (Saint Faustina) Words from Pope Francis Jesus shows us the real face of God, for whom power does not mean destruction, but love, and for whom justice is not vengeance, but mercy. Respect Life Prayer is so powerful! May we pray for every life that the Lord has created. Our prayers don t have to long, just heartfelt. As we go through our day, let s try to offer even the smallest prayer for: expectant mothers, especially those in crisis pregnancies: those with mental, physical, and emotional disabilities; the poor; the outcast those who don t seem to fit in ; those in prison; the sick and the dying. God answers prayers. They don t have to be fancy, just sincere! A Scripture to Ponder What can separate us from the love of Christ?... I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 9: 35, 38)

Annual Camp Hope Day Sponsored by: Brookhaven Hospital Medical Center Camp Hope Day was created to help children ages 4-17 who are grieving the loss of a loved one. The day includes sharing, remembering, and commemorating in a nurturing and playful environment. 6 August 19, 2018 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 6 FAITH FORMATION relform@verizon.net Lynn Fein, Director SAINT MARK S YOUTH MINISTRY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN 7 TH THROUGH 12 TH GRADES Plans are now underway for the start of our classes in September. Our Faith Formation program continually seeks volunteers to serve as door monitors to assist us in providing a safe environment for the children, as well as assistants to our Catechists. Please contact the Faith Formation Office, if you think this is one way in which you would like to share your gifts. If anyone has been praying about being a Catechist, or feels called to this ministry, I would love to hear from you. Registration for our Catechetical Year continues. Please contact the Faith Formation Office to arrange a time that is convenient for you to come in and register during the week. We are also always happy to take registrations following our Sunday s 9:30 Mass. Upon registering, families will be provided with details concerning our new online registration fee payment. Children entering first grade in September should be registered now to begin the two year preparation for the reception of the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Children then continue with each level, growing in their faith and love of the Lord. The schedule for our Faith Formation classes is very family friendly, offering both afternoon and evening times for each level. We are always happy to hear from any families who would like to find out more about our parish offerings which enable the children, teens, parents and grandparents opportunities to increase their faith and grow closer to the Lord. We offer weekly formation for children and teens, a Liturgy of the Word for children at our 9:30 Sunday Mass year round, preparation for the sacraments of Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation, a summer Vacation Bible Camp, a Youth Group and Youth Masses followed by gettogethers for seventh through twelfth graders, service opportunities for our young people, discussion and sharing for parents and grandparents and seasonal events for the entire parish. If your child has any special needs at all we will work with you to provide the very best learning environment. You are invited to call or the Faith Formation Office to discover the many ways your family can be involved, or to register your children for our classes. Our Liturgy of the Word for children, offered year round at our Sunday s 9:30 Mass, provides a time for children from Pre-K through Grade 6 to listen to the readings from a Children s Lectionary, hear a reflection on the message of the readings and share their own thoughts about how they bring the Good News to their family and friends. I am so grateful to those teens who assist me on a regular basis with this endeavor as they prepare to receive the sacrament of Confirmation. Two of our Catechists for our weekly classes, Susan Biscardi and Mary Keefer, have been a tremendous help with this ministry. Many young people who will be entering the first year of Confirmation preparation in September have already started to assist and we look forward to more of our candidates joining this dedicated group. FAITH FORMATION DIRECTOR MRS. LYNN FEIN OR relform@verizon.net Our weekly Youth Group gatherings for those in grades 7 through 12 will begin again on Monday, September 24. A Youth Ministry Information Night for our young people and their parents will be held on Monday, September 17 beginning at 7 p.m. in our parish center. Come and hear what St. Mark s Youth Ministry is all about. Representatives from parish ministries, which welcome the participation of young people, will also be present. We are so grateful to all of the parents who encouraged and supported their teens participation in our Youth group this past year. We invite all parishioners to spread the word about our Youth Ministry to any young person you may know. Our next Youth Mass for young people and their families is on Saturday, October 13 at 5 p.m. All are encouraged and invited to celebrate Mass with us. Project Mercy, a ministry to the East-End s Roman Catholic Youth is a partnership between St. James Parish in Setauket s Youth Ministry and the other parishes in our area. Upcoming dates for high school aged youth to gather are August 22 and 29. These themed nights are being held at St. James youth center from 7 to 9 p.m. For further details please contact our Faith Formation Office.
