4 May 22, 2016 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 4 Thought for the Week In this Year of Mercy declared by Pope Francis we may ask ourselves what, exactly, are works of mercy? Works of mercy are the practical ways we live out being merciful. They are how we show loving kindness and compassion to the people around us, both physically and spiritually. Corporal Works: There are two kinds of works (or acts) of mercy: Spiritual Works Feed the hungry. Instruct those lacking knowledge or comprehension. Give drink to the thirsty. Counsel the doubtful. Clothe the naked. Admonish sinners. Shelter the homeless. Bear wrongs patiently. Visit the sick. Forgive offenses willingly. Visit the imprisoned. Comfort the afflicted. Bury the dead. Pray for the living and the dead. Don t be scared We can t necessarily do all of these things, but we sure can do some of them! Mother Teresa gave us great words of wisdom: Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love. Respect Life The Eucharist I am the living bread that came down from Heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world. (John 6:51) When we receive the Eucharist we receive Him He is closer than the beat of our hearts. Words from Pope Francis Do not keep the Holy Spirit a prisoner, locked up inside your heart; rather let Him push and move you to boldly

5 May 22, 2016 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 5 A Scripture to Ponder Draw near to God, And He will draw near to you. 8 May 22, 2016 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 8 MUSIC NOTES Last week, many of the children in our Children s Choir received their First Holy Eucharist. Congratulations to Sam Alessi, Natalee Cortina, Gianna Ruggero, Nora White, and Joan Yantsos! We, in the Music Ministry, would like to extend our joyful wishes and fervent prayers to these young children and all the children who received their First Holy Eucharist in the last two weeks as they take their next spiritual step in growing closer to Jesus. Last month, we celebrated Fr. Jeff's 40th anniversary of his ordination. I sincerely thank John Aloisio and members of the Contemporary Ensemble as well as our Adult Choir in providing music for this very special Mass and we congratulate Fr. Jeff for his devoted years of priestly service. We wish him many more faithful years!!! On Monday, May 30, we will honor our fallen service members by remembering them on Memorial Day. In their honor, I urge you to read two hymns in our hymnal, Hymn #632, America, the Beautiful and #633, Eternal Father, Strong to Save. America, the Beautiful is one of our most beloved patriotic songs. It originated as a poem called "Pikes Peak," published in the 1895 magazine "The Congregationalist." Katharine Lee Bates, a Wellesley College professor, was moved to write the four-verse poem after visiting Colorado's Pikes Peak. The music is from an 1888 hymn by Samuel Augustus Ward which came to him while on a ferryboat trip from Coney Island back to his home in New York City, after a leisurely summer day in He immediately wrote it down and was so anxious to capture the tune in his head that he asked a fellow passenger friend for his shirt cuff to write the tune on (thus perhaps the off the cuff analogy). It was not until 1910 that the words and music were forever intertwined. The lyrics to Eternal Father, Strong To Save were originally written as a poem in 1860 by William Whiting of Winchester, England, for a student who was about to sail for the United States. The melody, published in 1861, was composed by fellow Englishman, Rev. John Bacchus Dykes, an Episcopalian clergyman. The hymn, found in most hymnals, is also known as the "Navy Hymn" because it is sung at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and on all Navy Bases in the United States and around the world. One hymn that is not in the hymnal, but equally moving, is God Bless America, written by Irving Berlin. In 1938, Berlin told an interviewer that wanted to write a great peace song. He'd already lived through one world war and with the Nazi uprising, he felt a second one brewing. He'd worked on a couple of songs but hadn't gotten very far. Remembering an old song he'd written twenty years earlier, he went back to his trove where he'd kept every verse, melody, and half-finished musical ideas and pulled out God Bless America. Berlin originally wrote it for a military revue called Yip Yip Yaphank while serving in the Army at Camp Upton in Yaphank where Brookhaven National Lab is currently located. The one common thread that is rooted in these three hymns is prayer. In America, the Beautiful, we pray that God shed His grace on America and mend thine ev'ry flaw of America, a prayerful appeal to God for the work in progress that is the United States while praising the natural beauty of His creation and thanking Him for the gift of it. In Eternal Father, Song to Save, we pray for God's protection and mercy as He watches over our men and women in every branch of service. In God Bless America, we pray for God's infinite wisdom in guiding our nation's leaders in their decision-making and in their leadership. Please continue to pray for our armed service personnel and their families and let us join all our voices in singing these communal prayer hymns over them. Lastly, don't forget our 50/50 fundraiser campaign! As the saying goes, you gotta be in it to win it! Last year, one of our choir members was the lucky winner. So you never know, it could be YOU this year!!! Till next time, keep singing, Carrie Logan

11 May 22, 2016 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 11 Dear Parishioners: Our Parish is truly blessed by our Lord and as One Faith, Family and Community we continuously answer God s call to share our gifts to help build His kingdom. Through our prayer and worship, our sacramental life, and ministries that serve others and bring hope and compassion, we are truly united as one. The Catholic Ministries Appeal is another opportunity for us to join together with our entire Long Island faith community and provide services which our parish alone could not provide. By supporting the Appeal, we can impact the lives of hundreds of thousands of people across our Island through programs that teach, heal, support, nurture and feed. I am continually amazed by the love and support that you, our parishioners, have for our Parish. Please know that our parish will also benefit financially by your support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Once we reach our goal, 20% of the funds we raise come back to the Parish to use for our own needs. Please remember that every pledge or gift is important and will help us reach our goal, but more importantly answer our Holy Father s call to show mercy to others by feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, welcoming strangers, offering instruction, and giving comfort. Imagine how many lives we can impact if we all participate in this mission. I ask you to prayerfully consider being a part of our parish family effort by giving in proportion to how the Lord has blessed you. Thank you for the many ways you gratefully share your gifts. May God continue to bless you and your loved ones. Sincerely yours in Christ, Father Jeff
