4 September 30, 2018 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 4 Thought for the Week The Eucharist Do you ever feel that God is far away? The whole story of salvation is the story of God being present to His people in Eden, in the wilderness, in the Temple, and finally in the Person of Jesus Christ. But the story doesn t stop there. He is still here with us in disguise. Under the appearances of bread and wine, Jesus Christ is truly present in His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. In the Eucharist, the God of the universe invites us into a deeper experience of His perfect love and He is waiting for you. (from: Presence The Mystery of the Eucharist) Words from Pope Francis In the church, and in the journey of faith, women have had and still have a special role in opening doors to the Lord. Respect Life St. Gerard Majella is the Patron Saint of pregnant mothers, of childbirth, and of unborn children. Thousands of children have been named after him by parents who are convinced that it was his intercession that helped them to have healthy children. St. Gerard, please intercede for mothers who are having difficulties in pregnancy and childbirth, and show us how to help them. A Scripture to Ponder Do not worry about tomorrow, tomorrow will take care of itself. (Matthew 6:34) A simpler version of this is: Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes. (The Message Bible)
5 September 30, 2018 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 5 (Continued from Page 4) Just a Thought. FORMED Jesus, please help me to take one day at a time! (You are always at my side!) A Little Humor. Welcome to True Reformers: Saints of the Catholic Reformation, a study crafted to teach about those who led the Church s rebirth from the ashes of confusion caused by the Protestant Reformation: the saints. The saints of the Catholic Reformation show us just how powerful beautiful is the human heart s free response to God s generous grace. If you haven t joined FORMED yet, here is how you do it: FORMED is free! To register: 1. Go to stmarksrcc-shoreham.formed.org 2. Click Register 3. Enter your name 4. Enter your address 5. Enter your desired password Divine Mercy Retreat The second session of our retreat taught us how, in the person of Jesus Christ, God reveals His merciful love for humanity. He makes Himself approachable, touchable, and welcoming to all, even in our sin. Still, human beings all throughout history continued to struggle to trust God and choose conversion through His mercy. In this session, we saw from the example of three great saints how God is revealing His loving heart to each of us. 6 September 30, 2018 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 6 FAITH FORMATION relform@verizon.net Lynn Fein, Director Registration for our Catechetical Year continues. It is certainly not too late, and we are always happy to welcome you back or to welcome any newcomers. Please visit the Faith Formation Office to register your child. We are also always happy to take registrations following our Sunday s 9:30 Mass. Upon registering, families will be provided with details concerning our new online registration fee payment. Children entering first grade in September should be registered now to begin the two year preparation for the reception of the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Children then continue with each level, growing in their faith and love of the Lord. The schedule for our Faith Formation classes is very family friendly, offering both afternoon and evening times for each level. We are always happy to hear from any families who would like to find out more about our parish offerings which enable the children, teens, parents and grandparents opportunities to increase their faith and grow closer to the Lord. We offer weekly formation for children and teens, a Liturgy of the Word for children at our 9:30 Sunday Mass year round, preparation for the sacraments of Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation, a summer Vacation Bible Camp, a Youth Group and Youth Masses followed by get-togethers for seventh through twelfth graders, service opportunities for our young people, discussion and sharing for parents and grandparents and seasonal events for the entire parish. If your child has any special needs at all we will work with you to provide the very best learning environment. We are also happy to welcome any families with children who may have been delayed in receiving the sacraments. You are invited to call or the Faith Formation Office to discover the many ways your family can be involved, or to register your children for our classes. Our Confirmation candidates will be continuing their formation on Wednesday, October 3 with a choice of coming between 4:30 and 6 or 7 to 8:30. We continue our sharing on the Mass, with special emphasis on the actual conferral of the sacrament during the Mass, and also our presentation of St. John Paul II s teaching on The Theology of the Body. Our times together, which included our retreat on September 23, are proving so fruitful for the ongoing formation of the teens. My thanks are extended to Catechists Katie Agelis, Danielle Joannou, Christina McAuliffe and Gina Mingoia for being such examples of what it means to be a Catholic for the teens, but also for their presence and support during these final weeks preceding our parish celebration of Confirmation. As always we were so blessed to have Father Jeff join us at the retreat and share his story of faith, while at the same time encouraging the young people as their own faith journey continues. The acknowledgment of our teens and prayers for them led by Father Tom, at the 11:30 Mass prior to our retreat, was also so greatly appreciated. Our final Confirmation interviews are taking place on Thursday, October 4 between 5 and 8 and Friday, October 5 between 3 and 6, providing an opportunity for the candidates to reflect on both their knowledge of and continuing practice of our beloved faith. (Faith Formation Continued) For the Level 7 families who were unable to join us last week, a second gathering is planned on Tuesday, October 2 at 7 p.m. for our Confirmation Enrollment Ceremony as the girls and boys begin their two year preparation for receiving Confirmation. SAINT MARK S YOUTH MINISTRY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN 7 TH THROUGH 12 TH GRADES FAITH FORMATION DIRECTOR MRS. LYNN FEIN OR relform@verizon.net We were thrilled to welcome the young people to our first gathering of the year last week. Their enthusiasm and willingness to participate in all we do at our weekly get-togethers was so very obvious. Their engagement in our service project which has proved to be so rewarding for not just the group, but for all of our parishioners was certainly a teaching moment with the use of quotes from Scripture and a discussion concerning social justice issues so central to our faith. We invite all parishioners to visit the area outside our church where the statue of Our Lady of Fatima is and select a rock which will provide a message with an opportunity for your own prayer and reflection. Our upcoming Youth Ministry gatherings will be on October 1, 15, 22 and 29 from 7 to 8:30 in the parish center. We invite all young people from seventh through twelfth grades to join us and bring a friend. Our next Youth Mass for young people from 7 th through 12 th grades and their families is on Saturday, October 13 at 5 p.m. All are encouraged and invited to celebrate Mass with us. A get-together will follow in the parish center.

10 September 30, 2018 The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mark Page 10 Reaching Out Thoughts from Your Outreach Ministry September, 2018 Our busy season has begun! Thank you so much for all the school supplies you provided. They lessen the financial burden for so many families! Now we head toward Thanksgiving and Christmas. As a matter of fact, the Thanksgiving/Christmas letter will be mailed out this Monday. Our St. Mark s family is always so generous, always exhibiting that our faith is shown through the works we perform. St. James says: What good is it my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well, but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. (James 2:14) This is not a problem here at St. Mark s! No matter what the need or request, our faithful parish family is always right there. God loves all of you cheerful givers! ********* As you know, Gene Morton who supervised our food pantry for many years, retired recently. We miss him very much, but God has provided some wonderful new help. Our new Pantry Peeps have stepped up to fill the void. Deb Tonetti, Ron Chirco, and Jennie Crescimanno have formed a very nice team to continue organizing and distributing food to our friends in need. Blessings on each of them! ******** Reaching Out has taken on a new challenge that of praying for our faithful priests in this time of crisis in our Church that we all love so much. These dedicated men make it possible for us to receive Jesus in the Eucharist! They baptize our children, sanctify marriages, anoint our sick and dying, hear our confessions, and lend an ear when we need Godly advice or direction. Lord, please bless our devoted priests, and keep them strong always leaning on You. This is a difficult time, but we know that this not about our Catholic faith, but those in the church who veered from that Faith. The Holy Spirit is always with us, and where He is, there is power, healing and change! Our job is to pray, speak up, and pray!! In His Love, Jane and Volunteers
