3 July 21, 2013 MARRIAGE BOOT CAMP I learned something the other day by listening to a podcast of the Joan Hamburg Show. Joan had an interview with Jim and Elizabeth Carroll who have been running a Marriage Boot Camp for some twenty years. They also have a reality TV show that I confess I have never seen: Marriage Boot Camp: Bridezillas. I may well skip that, but then again curiosity may get the better of me. At any rate, you have to give the Carrolls credit for making an attempt to save marriages. In the interview with Joan Hamburg they said that the biggest problems in marriage is that the newly-weds really have no preparation for the reality of married life. An awful lot of attention is focused on the wedding and everything that surrounds it; far less attention is given to the future. Believe it or not, the Catholic Church has been way ahead of the game in attempting to have marriage preparation programs. The point of Pre- Cana is to provide an atmosphere in which the couples can listen to an informed presentation and instruction on marriage as a sacrament. The important thing in my mind is that the couples get a great opportunity to discuss all kinds of significant issues. Priests know that the conversations after the sessions are what really counts. Young people often say that their experience in Pre-Cana is helpful and enlightening. There is also a pre-nuptial inventory (FOCCUS) that is an assessment of the attitudes of the prospective bride and groom. Usually these reveal a high percentage of agreement, but on occasion some serious areas of disagreement are found. It was interesting to me that Jim and Elizabeth Carroll said that one of the principal difficulties is that the young couples getting married today in many instances do not have good marriage mentors in their parents. I believe that the parents are by far the best marriage educators. You learn to be a good married person from your parents. If you grow up in a home that is ravaged by continual fighting and plagued with unhappiness, it will be hard (but not at all impossible) to be a great spouse. The Carrolls make the point that so many
4 of those getting married today are the products of divorce or marital discord. Young people who have had this misfortune need to be careful not to replicate the bad things they have experienced. Nobody knows a child quite as well as his or her parents. There is very little they do not understand. Parents should be the marriage models. Parents teach by everything they say and do and their attitudes easily become our own. I urge parents to speak candidly about the dignity and holiness of the great sacrament of marriage with their children. Talk of the necessity of sacrifice and humility in the relationship. Make Christ the center of your home and try to make your house resound with His values. Children, although it may take time, should realize that their parents have a great deal of knowledge and a wealth of human experience to share with them. Remember Pre-Cana really begins at home. Finally, those who are getting ready for marriage should spend time in prayer and thoughtful conversation with each other. Concentrate on the lifetime not just the day of the ceremony. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald Today s readings speak of hospitality. Abraham, who cheerfully did for his guests all that desert hospitality required, was rewarded with his heart s desire a son. Martha also busied herself with all the details of hospitality but grudgingly and with complaint. Am I a cheerful or a grudging giver? 11 SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF JULY In these golden days of summer lets learn to slow down, to quiet our mind, to take minute vacations; slow down to look at a flower, to talk to a friend, to read a good book. The perfect place to quiet down is in front of the Blessed Sacrament. In the Lord s presence we can restore our tired mind and drive away our worldly struggles. While we are in His Real Presence pray for vocations to the priesthood, pray for the seminarians, pray for our priests; nothing is more dear to Our Lord than holy men who consecrate daily His Body and Blood. Let us bring the love of our Lord to our neighbors, especially if they are infirm and in need of help. Share your reactions and feedback by calling (516) x9592. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish. LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Can we call ourselves believers? No, unless our whole life has shown it. Some things about us have to look very different from the life of a non-believer, holding ourselves to high standards, utterly life-reversing. We have the freedom to choose all of God s ways, but like Jesus, who with single-mindedness, follows the Father when He encounters individuals who want to follow Him. Jesus accepts them, but in each case the person meets difficulties on centering their life on God. Now, like in the Gospel, we are full of distractions which separate our good intentions, hours of TV, shopping, hours on computers, iphones, ipads. How can we invite the Lord to become our center? We need to feel the desire to be centered-which is the desire for God. For once, let s clear away all the distractions, and picture ourselves free and single-minded, plowing a furrow alongside Jesus, heading straight to God s presence. There is a beautiful prayer, part of the Eucharistic preface YOU have no need of our praise, yet our desire to thank you is itself YOUR gift. Our prayer of thanksgiving adds nothing to your greatness but makes us grow in your grace. On the one hand, God is utterly self-contained, self-sufficient, in no need of anything outside of himself, and on the other hand, he is passionate to share his being with us, to communicate, to love. Let s always center ourselves in the ONE that is the rock of safety and who created us out of His Love. This week we have an important CD, Get to Know the MOTHER of GOD, by Chris Padgett. This CD will help you to reflect, ponder and meditate on the two powerful names of Jesus and Mary. The Holy Rosary, by Mathew Arnold. This CD will help you to pray the Rosary when you are by yourself or when you want to introduce this powerful prayer to your family and friends. At your disposal you have a way of providing the teachings of the Church for yourself, your children and family and every one the Lord will want to bring them on your path. For a very inexpensive amount you can provide spiritual knowledge, the fruit of which you will not know this side of the heaven! Stop by our kiosks and chose as many CDs you can afford. THEY MAY TURN A LIFE UPSIDE DOWN!! Toti Conforti
