3 July 14, 2013 FATHER ANDREW GREELEY Father Andrew Greeley, the noted sociologist and author, died this past May in Chicago. Ordained in 1954, he served as a parish priest for a short period of time and quickly went on to advanced studies in sociology. He was the most prolific of writers and it was said jokingly that he never had a thought that went unpublished. His works range from novels about bishops, priests, seminarians and nuns to the most scholarly articles and studies. When I was a young priest I recall receiving a rather complex survey for some study on the priesthood that he was involved in producing. Parenthetically, I must confess that I never filled it out I m not a great one for surveys!) Father Greeley loved the Church and was one of her severe critics. He had no hesitancy in taking bishops to task and criticizing the poor preaching of priests. Very early on he spoke of the impending sex abuse crisis and in a certain sense was prophetic. For many years he was one of the most noted and talked about priests in the United States. While many would readily disagree with him on a multiplicity of issues, you could not deny his intelligence, endless productivity and energy and the vast volume of his written and spoken words. He was a priest and a scholar with a vast amount of ability to promote his own ideas. In my own mind, while I had serious differences of opinion and approach, I believe that he loved the Catholic Church with a passion and did what he did to try to improve the Church in America and her mission. There are a couple of things that I especially found myself in marked agreement with Father Greeley. In his book The Confessions of a Parish Priest he says he considered the life of a priest to be the most wonderful and fulfilling one that could be imagined. I could not agree more. He realized that the priest is involved with making Christ present in the world and transforming peoples lives by the preaching of the Gospel. He could not think of anything more exciting and valuable. He even went to go so far as to say that sometimes he thought it would have been better if he stayed a simple parish priest instead of becoming a world famous author and high profile figure. He maintained that his novels were meant to preach the Gospel in a way that would be read and understood by the contemporary world. That is open to debate, but his stories were never dull. (I only read a few. My mother was not a fan.)

4 Another point Father Greeley made was really a very traditional principle in Catholic theology: The sacraments are for people or if you like it in Latin: Sacramenta propter homines. That means that it is the will of Christ and His Church that the sacraments be as available as possible to people. Father Greeley felt that there were many gatekeepers in the Church who felt that there should be many requirements to receive the sacraments. He felt that good people were discouraged from marrying in the Church or even having their children baptized. While it is true that certain minimal dispositions are necessary, it is also true that it is necessary to have a pastoral approach and flexibility. As pastor, it is a primary concern of mine that the sacraments be properly, easily and joyfully received. We never want to turn people away from Christ. Pope Francis himself has reiterated this theme. The Church is the Living Presence of Christ in the world. We all have the responsibility to radiate and communicate Christ and His Gospel. Father Greeley made significant efforts. Agree or disagree with him, he did a tremendous amount of work. He was not always right, but he did love the Church and served her in a singular way. May he rest in peace! In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald The Good Samaritan was also a good steward giving his time and his treasure to meet his neighbor s need. At the end of this familiar story, Jesus urges his hearers and us to go and do the same! STEWARDSHIP COLLECTION 07/08/12 $27,299 07/07/13 $25,590 (-6.26%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish!

6 Could you imagine for a moment that because of an illness or loss of job you were having trouble feeding or sheltering yourself or your family? A crisis can take many forms and strike in an instant. The good news is that because of you, the Catholic Ministries Appeal provides the support necessary for our Parish Outreach and Catholic Charities programs to assist those in their time of greatest need. Every day, people in our community are helped because of support from funds raised through the Catholic Ministries Appeal people like John. John saw information about the Catholic Ministries Appeal at his local parish and he knew he had to turn to the Church for help, since he had nowhere else to go. John had been gainfully employed for more than 7 years at a leading chain when he began to feel ill. Soon his medical issues made it impossible for him to keep working and he was forced to go out on disability. After paying the co-pays on his medications, his rent and utilities bills, John had very little left from his disability check to purchase food and other necessities each month. Sometimes he would go two weeks in the month without eating a full meal. It was hard for him to believe how hungry he was really hungry. It was hard for him to ask for help, but with nowhere else to turn, he did. Catholic Charities found him a specialist who assessed his needs and directed him to appropriate resources in his community. He went to his Parish Outreach where he received food that let him make it through the month. John got the help he so desperately needed. Today, he is back to work and doing well. I am so thankful that I know there is somewhere I can turn, where there are people that care, people I can talk to, if I am ever in such a situation again, shared John. The Catholic Ministries Appeal is so important for so many other critical ministries and programs that help our children grow in the faith, form our priests and lay leaders, promote respect for unborn life, and house our disadvantaged seniors. These critical programs allow us to do what scripture tells us to do: Serve God by Serving Others. Thank you most sincerely for considering this special request to make a gift to the 2013 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Please know that no gift is too small and every gift makes a difference in the lives of people like John and so many others.

11 SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF JULY In these golden days of summer lets learn to slow down, to quiet our mind, to take minute vacations; slow down to look at a flower, to talk to a friend, to read a good book. The perfect place to quiet down is in front of the Blessed Sacrament. In the Lord s presence we can restore our tired mind and drive away our worldly struggles. While we are in His Real Presence pray for vocations to the priesthood, pray for the seminarians, pray for our priests; nothing is more dear to Our Lord than holy men who consecrate daily His Body and Blood. Let us bring the love of our Lord to our neighbors, especially if they are infirm and in need of help. Share your reactions and feedback by calling (516) x9592. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish. LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA In the first few weeks of his papacy, Pope Francis has captured the hearts of the people. Fascinated by his charisma, his humility, his love for the poor, his reflections on God s Mercy.he tell us The Lord never gets tired of forgiving. Never.. And we listen; reflecting on what Francis wants us to know. To be a Christian means in a special way to invert the value system of the wider world, that authentic power is service. He tell us We live in the most unequal part of the world, which has grown the most yet reduced misery the least, creating a situation of social sin that cries out to heaven. The first Sunday in office Pope Francis visited the parish Church of the Vatican, to say Mass. After Mass he stood outside the church and greeted people as they left, patting kids on the head and kissing them, with a quick word and a smile for everybody. He wants to be the world s parish priest, desiring not to lose contact with ordinary people and develop a sense of what is in the hearts of his people. That is the center of evangelization, meeting people where they are, being able to connect with their needs, knowing people well, and staying close to them. That is essential for anyone who hopes to bring Christ to the world!! Let us reflect on it and call on the Holy Spirit to obtain the desire, the boldness, to proclaim the Gospel of the Lord to everyone that comes close to us!! We can change the culture; we can alter the darkness that surrounds us. How? St. Paul tells us to always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope Can you do that? Take the time to learn our Faith to pass it to others. Right here in our parish we have wonderful CDs which teach us all we need to learn. Stop by our three kiosks and pick as many CDs you can afford, listen to them and pass them to others who need to learn the truth of our faith. This week two titles which will enhance the understanding of the Old Testament. ABRAHAM, Historical Roots of Our Faith by Stephen Ray, and The Dead Sea Scrolls by Dr. Bergsma. You will learn a lot about the Catholic Faith and of our Old Testament heritage. Once again I ask you to be aware of the need to deposit the very inexpensive fee, which permits us to continue this ministry. Toti Conforti
