3 August 11, 2013 HAIL HOLY QUEEN ENTHRONED ABOVE As you may know, Pope Francis has announced that he will canonize Blessed John XXIII and Blessed John Paul II in the near future. The other day I read (and it may only be a supposition) that he is thinking of also proclaiming the Servant of God Pope Pius XII a saint. (Parenthetically, a year before he became Pope Pius, Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, stayed here in Manhasset at Inisfada.) I mention all this because Pope Pius XII is my favorite pope. You might think that he is because he reigned while I was a child and an adolescent but I have one other tremendous reason and that is because on November 1 st, 1950, he defined the Dogma of the Assumption, declaring that Mary was taken into heaven body and soul. It was one of the most glorious and impressive days in the entire history of the Catholic Church. With serene dignity and majesty, Pius XII, the Vicar of Jesus Christ on earth, deliberately authoritatively defined and proclaimed a dogma that had been believed by Catholics for more than a thousand years. As he read he came to the momentous words: For which reason, after we have poured forth prayers of supplication again and again to God, and have invoked the light of the Spirit of Truth, for the glory of Almighty God who has lavished his special affection upon the Virgin Mary, for the honor of her Son, the immortal King of the Ages and the Victor over sin and death, for the increase of the glory of that same august Mother, and for the joy and exultation of the entire Church; by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. (Munificentissimus Deus) He quickly added that anyone who denied this truth would by that very fact fall away entirely from the Catholic faith. Interestingly enough, the Pope never answered the question as to whether or not our Blessed Mother ever died. That is still an open question. In the Eastern Church it is thought that Mary did not actually die but fell asleep in the Lord. The Latin or Western Church generally believes that Mary indeed died. On this question we are perfectly free to believe whatever we like.

4 This Thursday, August 15 th, is the great day of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven. Of course, we will have plenty of Masses and the main altar and the altar of Our Lady will be specially decorated for this celebration of her magnificent triumph over death and entrance into the Kingdom of Christ. In my mind s eye I can see her rising from earth to the splendor of eternal life with Christ the King. What a great day for her and for us her children! Happy Assumption Day! In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST The summer is coming to an end, but we still have time to reflect and pray to discern God s will for our life. Take the time to live the life that God has planned for us. It is living this life that we will be truly happy! Our Lady, who said YES to the angel of the Lord, is our model and inspiration; persevering in praying the Rosary, this powerful weapon, will help us. August 15th is the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, pray that you will find time to spend in the service of your neighbors, those that may be sick, sad or lonely; you can bring them God s presence just listening with love. Share your reactions and feedback at pastoralcouncil@staidanparish.org or call (516) x9592. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish. REMEMBERING OUR SERVICEMEN & WOMEN Protect our service men and women, Lord Jesus, as we continue to pray for world peace.

13 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA The last two generations of Catholics had been changed by the secularized culture which prevails around us. Many do not sense the value of the Sacrifice of the Mass. They fail to receive the Sacrament of Penance; do not know the Church s foundational prayers. They have lost the sense of mystery and the transcendent, and its meaning. We need to re-propose our Catholic Faith to our world, we need to embrace and recognize the work of New Evangelization which the Church brings to us with a sense of urgency. Secularism is now rapidly enveloping our society and our culture. Our value systems, much-cherished traditions, and culture are being eroded by the globalization which impacts every aspect of life and activity. How do we stay true to our Catholic faith in the midst of all this? What are some practical ways for us to battle materialism or consumerism? How to recognize individualism (elevating the importance of the individual above all else) to be a barrier to our faith? We need to fully understand Christ s message in the Gospels. To realize that Jesus offers us, not only a new way of living, but also a whole new way of being. Thus making this truth a total part of us, it will be important for us to pass it to everyone in our family, friends, and workplace. Let s build the kingdom of God on earth so as to experience the fullness of the kingdom of God in the life to come! The CDs that we offer this week will help you to illuminate the importance of being part of the New Evangelization. WALK THE WALK by Dr. Timothy Gray explains how being a disciple of Jesus has always been synonymous with being a Christian and calls us to follow as engaged participants in God s plan, ordering our lives to bear witness to the Lord in our families, communities and to the world. EVANGELIZING CATHOLICS by Dr. Scott Hahn. Dr. Hahn discusses why the New Evangelization is the greatest priority of the Church at this time. How we are called to share our faith. He shows how the Eucharist relates to Jesus death and resurrection, and how Blessed John Paul II s called for a New Evangelization must be based on the Eucharist. THE SEVEN PILLARS OF CATHOLIC SPIRITUALITY by Matthew Kelly. This CD is a challenge for you to be the best you can be. These are powerful CDs! Stop by any of our kiosks and get as many as you can afford to give away and share with all of those who need to learn the truth of our faith! Thank you for your commitment. The very inexpensive fee helps us to continue this important ministry of evangelization, we appreciate you generosity, God Bless you!
