3 From the Desk of Fr. Mike Dear Friends, Today we welcome Fr. Matt Buening, who will be leading us in prayer during our Parish Mission. We are blessed to have him. He was a big hit when he came to take Masses one weekend a year or so ago. I am so excited to have him! He is a dynamic, holy, and funny priest...my favorite kind. Please do make an effort to come to the Mission. Fr. Matt will talk at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. I think he will give us an overview of the talks during his homilies at Masses this weekend. What a blessing to have him! We also have 40 Hours of Adoration going on during the time of our mission. Please sign up for an hour. The biggest excuse I get is I have kids. Bring them! The Parish Mission officially closes our 150th anniversary year. I can t believe how fast it went. Here is a reminder of how we celebrated each month of the year: Of course, graces can t really be measured or counted. That is the nature of grace. 4 Parish Mission November 18th - 20th This Sunday, November 18th thru Tuesday, November 20th at 7:00 p.m. each night, we will have a Parish Mission Night with Fr. Matt Buening. Also, on Tuesday, November 20th there will be a gathering for Cheese and Wine in the cafeteria after Mission Night. We will do the Parish Mission in the context of a 40 hours devotion, an ancient tradition in our Church! We will have adoration for 40 hours, starting with Sunday night all the way through Tuesday night. Sign up for some hours in the narthex!!!!!!! Fr. Matt will give his nightly reflections during Evening Prayer (Vespers) each night. It will be a most wonderful celebration. Please come!! This will conclude our 150th Anniversary Celebration. St. Joe PTO Fund Fundraiser The St. Joe PTO will be selling tickets to the children s play Rapunzel sponsored by the Shelby County Players. The play will be Sunday, December 9th at 2:00 p.m. at The Strand. Tickets are $3.00 per person and ALL profits will go to our PTO. Tickets may be purchased after Mass or the school office. Mike and a priest friend have written a play for Christmas called Christmas in the Creche. It chronicles the life of St. Francis of Assisi, who invented the nativity scene (aka the crèche). They need things like paper towels, toilet paper, laundry soap, batteries, stamps, etc. All items on the tags cost between $5 and $15. 6 Sr. Joan s Corner Dear Parishioners, For someone like me, who likes to see the bright side of every event and the good side of everyone, the readings this week are pretty gloomy. The Church is wanting us to think of the end times. There are a couple of ways to look at end times. One can think of the end of the world. Another way is for each person to think of their own end time. I don t believe that the world will end any time soon because I believe that the world is getting better and it will not end until everyone is at peace. (Really, the world is getting better. We just hear about all the bad stuff.) I don t believe that the world will achieve peace in my lifetime even though I pray for it every day unless some miracle happens. I pray for that miracle. None of us know when our own end time will be so we always need to be prepared. There was some hope at the end of the first reading when Daniel says, those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars forever. So as we take time to pray this week during the Mission or during adoration, you might pray for our world, pray for peace and justice. And think about how you help to make this world a better place, how you bring justice to your family, your neighborhood, and the world. If you try to lead others to justice then you will shine like a star at your end time. Have a Blessed Thanksgiving! 7 Fr. Mike Talks on Last Things What do we pray for when we pray for a happy death? Do you know the difference between Last Rites, Anointing of the Sick, Viaticum, the Apostolic Pardon, and Extreme Unction???? If not, plan to come on Sunday, November 25th at 5:00 p.m. in the St. Joe cafeteria for Fr. Mike s talk on this important matter. These are matters of eternal life!!! Please come to learn!! November is the perfect time to discuss things, as it is the month of All Saints and All Souls. We must be ready!!! Campaign for Human Development Sunday, November 18th is the Campaign for Human Development. It is an education-action campaign that offers building blocks of hope to break the cycle of poverty in the United States by providing grants and loans to poor communities. Please use your Campaign for Human Development Envelope in your Sunday Envelope packet and drop it in the regular collection basket. Thank you for your generosity! Handel s Messiah In 1741, George Frideric Handel wrote a beautiful oratio by the name of Messiah. Scripturally based, it chronicles the life of Jesus the Messiah. It is breathtaking! Pope Benedict once heard it performed and announced, To hear that is to know God is true. Fr. Mike will drive the school bus for all who are interested in the showing in Indianapolis on Friday, December 14th. 8 November: Month of Prayer for the Faithful Departed The Church encourages the offering of prayers and Masses for the souls of the faithful departed in Purgatory. Please feel free to enroll the names of deceased individuals in the Book of Prayer for the Dead, as we hold them in our hearts and lift them up in prayer. Encouragement This Sunday s Gospel is our final selection from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the account of his arrest and passion. In it Jesus gives his disciples hope to sustain them through his passion and death and any persecution or suffering that they would encounter after his resurrection. The words from the book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel s time. The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives. St. Joe and St. Vincent are doing Confirmation preparation together this year, therefore we rotate our meeting space. We meet twice a month.
