3 From the Desk of Fr. Mike Dear Friends, A lot has been going on of late! I m thrilled about how well things are going. I want to count some graces and give you some updates. The Monday Morning Bible study got off to a great start! Many people came. Thanks. So many came not everyone will fit in the house, so we ll have this at the St. Vincent Hall from now on. Newcomers ALWAYS welcome. Mondays at 10 am. Family Faith Formation also started well. Lots and lots of families and lots and lots of grace. It is not too late to sign up. Water kickball was so wonderful last Sunday with our high schoolers. About 30 were here and enjoyed prayer, fun, and food. I wish all our high schoolers would come. Middle School youth group started also. Second Saturday of the month at 6 pm. Meet in the basement. Lots of kids and good brainstorming about service projects, fun outings, and other stuff! Children s Liturgy of the Word started last weekend. Remember: all preschoolers, kindergartners, and first graders are welcome. Every 10:30 am Sunday Mass. Many thanks to Mrs. Zagar and Mr. Cross for their work with this! State of the Parish: I will share about the state of our parish during Masses this weekend, and everyone will receive in the mail a nice annual report. It has good news to share. Automatic Withdrawal: Included in the Annual Report will be some information about how to set this up. It is a wonderful thing for everyone. I have it set up on my account. I don t have to think about writing a check; it just comes out. The parish benefits much from this, especially on snowy Sundays, vacation Sundays, and so on. Consider it anyway. God bless you! Joint Parish Picnic: The joint parish picnic will take place this Wednesday, August 22 at 6 pm. This was my welcome gathering a year ago. Seems like yesterday! That year went fast! RCIA starts very soon! Contact Sr. Joan or myself to get signed up! More info on page 6. My prayers and love! Fr. Mike Ask Fr. Mike Q. I ve noticed Seminarian Owen holds up your vestment during the consecration. Que Pasa? Anonymous A. Dear Anonymous, the answer is historical. Back in the day, especially in the 1500s or so, the vestments at Mass were quite heavy and ornate. Oftentimes they were too big for your average priest. Because they were so big and heavy, it was important to have someone help get the chausable out of the way when the priest went to elevate at the consecration. Even today, some chausables are big. The dark green one we have here, it is even a touch big for me. If I m not careful, it could knock over a cup or something. That s why Seminarian Owen also raised my chausable when I was incensing the altar. Q. Why did God make the world? Joseph S. (3rd grade) A. Dear Joseph, God bless you for this question and I have to tell you how much I appreciate looking out at you at Mass, because you are always paying close attention. I m not totally sure on this one Joseph, but I have a hunch that it s because God s love is so big that it spills out of himself. It s like my dog Glory. She often has so much energy, and if I kept her in a tiny room all day, she d go crazy. Same with God. He has so much love, so much energy, that he can t contain it; it overflows into the world, into his creation. As far as why he made the world that he did and as he did, all I can tell you is this: God is reflected everywhere in the world. Everything you see every animal, person, star, tree everything shows God somehow. Keep your eyes open and looking for him and you ll find his love somewhere! What are some things that are coming up at Do you have a question? Submit it online at stjoeshelby.org. There are 13 questions in the queue. Tuesday School Mass and Friday Mass Time Changed Mass time has changed for the Tuesday School Mass and the Friday Mass to 8:30 a.m. at St. Joseph.

7 Sr. Joan s Corner Dear Parishioners, This story was told by Katie Prejean McGrady. I thought it was worth repeating: While flying home Sunday, I got a salad from Chili s at the airport and this conversation happened: A young man ordered food after me, and we both stood there waiting. I pulled my phone out at one point, and the Crucifix from my rosary pulled out too, hanging out of my pocket. He saw it and asked me if I was Catholic. Yes... very, I jokingly replied. Oh, he said back. He looked past me and said, I used to be Catholic, but I never really felt like I fit. I nodded my head, not sure what to say back. But he continued talking, I went to a bunch of different parishes when I moved, but no one ever even asked me my name. I always loved going. But no one seemed to want me there. So I stopped. Well, I said, What s your name? I m Joe. Well, Joe. I m Katie. I m very Catholic, and I d love to see you come back to the Church. I want you there. Yeah... maybe, he replied. He said, I know it s my fault I left for something so silly as no one asking me my name; but like, isn t that the first thing Jesus would want us to know about each other? Yeah, Joe. It is. And you re right. Church is about people encountering Jesus, and we do that with other people. Joe left because no one saw him; and yes, we could argue that we don t go to Mass to just build community, but to receive the Eucharist. But the community is important too. People matter. Their names matter; we need to know them. If you see someone new at our parish, ask them their name. Engage with them. Thank them for being there. It takes 10 seconds to introduce yourself. And who knows? Maybe that s all it ll take to keep them coming, and they stay rooted in the Truth of the Faith as a result.
