School will start pretty soon! Thanks to Fr. Richard Nguta for being here today. He is our priest missionary this year, assigned to come by the diocese. We are happy to have him and support his ministry. Next weekend, I will be back from my pilgrimage but will be away doing a wedding for a good friend of mine. We went to Catholic school together, high school, and college. I always promised him that, if I became a priest, I d do his wedding one day. He is collecting on that promise! I will be back for the Meet and Greet with Principal Tush. My prayers and love! Fr. Mike Ask Seminarian Owen Duckett Q: Why do we call priests Father? In the Gospel our Lord instructs us call no one your father on earth. A: At the beginning of the 23rd chapter of the Gospel of Matthew our Lord is instructing the people to avoid the corrupt practices of the Pharisees and to follow the good doctrine that He provides. Among the practices that Christ admonishes is the use of the title rabbi (teacher of the Old Law) which the Pharisees evidently abuse for vainglory. Our Lord then goes on to provide a rationale for this, saying For one is your master; and all you are brethren. Following this pattern, Christ instructs the people to call none your father upon earth and provides the reasoning for one is your Father, who is in heaven. A third time Christ speaks, saying neither ye be called masters; for one is your master, Christ (here the word master is translated from magister in Latin meaning teacher ). How is this text to be interpreted? If taken in the strictly literal sense, that is, that Jesus was simply giving a set of binding regulations, then the Scriptures seem to contradict themselves. To provide one example, St. Paul in his epistles uses both the words father and master upwards of ten times, even instructing the faithful to be masters (see Heb 5:12). Perhaps another sense is meant when Christ tells us to call no one father or teacher. Scholars seem to agree that the idea conveyed here is that our Father in heaven is incomparably more to be regarded than any father upon earth, and no master to be followed who would lead us away from Christ. But this does not undo that we are by the law of God to have a due respect both for our parents and spiritual fathers, (see 1 Cor ) and for our teachers. To call a priest father (a practice which originated with the calling of monks abbot which resembles the Hebrew abba or father ) is therefore not a violation of our Lord s words any more than is calling our professor Dr. Smith or our own fathers papa. To place these spiritual and earthly fathers, who are supposed to imitate Christ, above God would however be a violation of Jesus command. Holiday World Youth Trip Fr. Mike, Sr. Joan, Seminarian Owen and Billy Cross took a bus full of middle and high school students to Holiday World last Tuesday. Everyone had a great time! 7 Sr. Joan s Corner Dear Parishioners, In this week s mass readings we hear of the importance of having or being good shepherds. One might think that these readings are only for the priest and bishops of our Church and how they are to act. I think we miss the message of Jesus if that is what we think. This message is for each of us. St. Paul in his letter to the Ephesians lets us know the type of shepherding Christ calls forth in those who follow him. In Christ, we are called to witness the presence of God s love by our lives of compassion, nonviolence and helping to carry the burdens of others. In the Gospel, Jesus was moved with pity. This week as we take time to pray, can we have the same mind and heart of our Good Shepherd, Jesus? Can we hear Christ calling to us in the shouts and cries of our brothers and sisters? Let us not remain uncaring and deaf. Gospel When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he began to teach them many things (Mark 6:30-34). Praying the Rosary Please join us to pray the rosary at St. Vincent Church on Wednesday, July 25th at 5:30 p.m. at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Fields or in the Parish Hall if weather is inclement. Rest in the Lord For several weeks we have listened to readings that have recounted just how arduous the work of prophets and disciples can be. In today s Gospel, the Lord Jesus listens to the reports of those he had sent out two by two to minister to the people. After the apostles reported what they had done, Jesus, recognizing their fatigue, says, Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile (Mark 6:31). Perhaps this is what the Lord is telling his disciples in the year 2018 as well. We need to pause on our journey of discipleship and simply rest in the Lord. Sunday Mass provides many opportunities for quiet times, particularly during the periods of silence following the readings. Why not take the time today to allow the saving word of the Lord to penetrate your heart during those silent times? Ask the Lord to renew you in body, mind, and spirit for the arduous work of discipleship.

8 Lake Monroe Boat Trip All middle school and high school youth at our parishes are invited to the annual boat trip at Lake Monroe on Tuesday, July 31st! Last year was amazing and we are all looking forward to another time on the water with Mass on the boat, swimming, tubing, etc. All are warmly invited. We will leave at 7:30 a.m. and return by early evening. Cost is $10. Fr. Mike at or call or text to sign up. We still need a few chaperones. St. Joseph/St. Vincent News Evangelization St. Joseph s and St. Vincent s Parishioners. The St. Joseph and St. Vincent combined Evangelization Committee is looking for volunteers to help with our booth at downtown Shelbyville First Friday and several upcoming events. Kitui lies in a region of Africa where the people struggle to survive The Catholic Church in Kitui is a tremendous source of life and hope, and has grown from a few hundred to more than 300,000 Catholics in just 50 years!
