3 Dear All, From the Desk of Fr. Mike A HUGE thank you for an amazing festival! It was the first festival we ve had since the green space was added. The space allowed for much more things, like music and the bounce house. I cannot thank the festival team enough for all their hard work, and to all volunteers. The festival was certainly fruitful in a multitude of ways. May 17 was 5th grade graduation. I am very proud of our fifth graders and I pray for them the best as they move on. Fortunately, we will have a Middle School Youth Group starting soon, so I know this is hardly goodbye. Still, it will be an adjustment not to see them every day. This coming Tuesday, May 22, is the last day of school here at St. Joe. I will miss the kids a LOT over the summer. I thank Fr. Mauro Rodas for doing the 1:00 p.m. Mass today. I am attending Fr. Joe Moriarty s 25th Anniversary Mass. Fr. Joe is my Spiritual Director and my Biggest Priest Hero. VBS make sure you sign up!! June 4-8. It's clear that you enjoy a good alcoholic beverage. I'm okay with that and I believe the Bible is as well. However, I know that too many people don't just enjoy alcohol responsibly, be it underage drinking, drinking and driving or drinking to excess. And even from a healthy living standpoint, it's not the best beverage choice. Can you give some guidance on how to be faithful in choosing how much, when, etc. to consume alcohol? Anonymous A. Good question. We must be very careful when it comes to drinking. I ve seen alcohol destroy lives and families, and I think we all have. A lot of people turn to alcohol to escape reality for one reason or another. Ask Fr. Mike, cont d A. That never ends well. G. K. Chesterton said, Drink because you are happy, but never because you are miserable..never drink because you need it There is good wisdom there. It is perfectly fine to drink from time to time to celebrate, thank God, enjoy fellowship, and relax. Ecclesiastes says, drink your wine with a merry heart. In fact, Catholic monks around the world went into the beer business as early as the 6th century in order to support their monasteries and help the world celebrate God s goodness. Nonetheless, we must never drink to excess, even in times of celebration. The virtue of temperance insists that we stop after a drink or two. We are not our true selves when we are drunk, and we re essentially telling God that the life, the reality he has given us is not good enough; we want something more. That is the problem with illegal drugs, too. What God has given us is enough for us. There is no need to escape into drunk land. Plus, too much alcohol and we make bad decisions and act imprudently and sinfully. A lot of people have ruined their lives because of a bad decision to keep drinking. Speaking of this, it s a wonderful thing how God builds in reminders of what is right and wrong. If you eat a whole pizza, you will feel sick. It s God s way of saying, don t overeat. Similarly, drink too much tonight and you ll have a hangover tomorrow. It s God s way of saying, don t do that. Side note: Excessive drinking (or underage drinking, or drinking and driving, etc.) is a serious enough thing that it needs to be brought to confession. I might also add that some people should not drink at all, such as when it might cause scandal (say you re in a room with a bunch of Baptists that don t believe in drinking at all). You also shouldn t drink if your drinking will lead another into temptation (e.g., if you re at dinner with a friend who has struggled with alcoholism...have a coke instead of a beer.) Obviously, you must never drink if you know that, once you start, you cannot stop. Last thought: If you suspect you might have crossed a line, for the love of God and his children, NEVER drive. Lord only knows how many kids have been sleeping in the backseat of a car when somebody under the influence ran into their vehicle and caused a collision.

St. Joseph News St. Joseph s 150th History Unique Way To Get To School It was the end of the 1953 school year with a perfect ending for two reasons: students had just a half day of school, and parishioner Tom Gallagher had permission from Father Bernard Burgert to ride a horse to school. I parked it at the bicycle rack right where the carport is now, Gallagher said, referring to the area between the current church office and Fr. Mike s house. He graduated from the eighth grade at St. Joseph Catholic School that year. Midway through class, Father Burgert came running into the classroom with a scoop yelling, "Tom Gallagher, get out there and clean up after your horse! Of course, it was a joke. Father really liked the Gallaghers, said Tom. He really liked my dad (Victor). Tom Gallagher has been a member of St. Joseph Parish since He was 10 years old. I went to St. Vincent s for the first and second grades in a two-room schoolhouse, but there was no indoor plumbing, so my family moved to St. Joe. Congratulations To Our St. Joe Graduates! Please call Marilyn Williamson at All Are Sent Fifty days after Easter Sunday we celebrate the fulfillment of all God s promises in the Feast of Pentecost, a feast that has sometimes been called the birthday of the church. One last time we are reminded that we Christians have received the Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Christian vocation. The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the account in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to understand what it means to live out our Christian vocation. Paul s letter shows us the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us. John s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his disciples to share his forgiveness and peace, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Today s Readings First Reading Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11). Psalm Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13) or Galatians 5: Gospel As the Father has sent me, so I send you. Receive the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23) or John 15:26-27; 16:12-15.

7 St. Vincent News Sr. Joan s Corner Dear Parishioners, As Pentecost was approaching, I began to think about how the Holy Spirit comes to us today in Shelby County. I see many signs of newness, change and renewal. I see people working together who have never done it before. I see people reaching out to share with other people, those they do not know and are not related to in any way. When do you feel the Holy Spirit working with you? I feel the Holy Spirit with us during the gatherings of people, not just on the weekend during Mass, but also during St. Vincent de Paul Society Meetings, Parish Council Meetings, Finance Meetings when we are making decisions for the parish communities. This week as you pray, pray to the Holy Spirit. The reading from the Acts of the Apostles recorded the events which transformed the once reluctant disciples into fearless proclaimers and evangelizers of Christ and the Kingdom of God. May the Holy Spirit do the same for us. Stewardship Renewal Form Sometime during the past 10 days you received a Stewardship Renewal Form from me. Please take time to read the letter and fill out the form. Some of you will be able and want to do much: others, because of circumstance, not so much. I just ask that you take time to pray about it. Sign it and return it in the collection basket on Sunday or mail it back. If you have already misplaced it, there will be others in the pews for the next few weeks.
