3 From the Desk of Fr. Mike Dear Friends, I am happy to be home from my pilgrimage. We all had such a rich experience. So many miracles! My words are too poor to explain how the Lord and Blessed Mother touched my life and priesthood. But I am going to give it a shot. Anyone who would like to hear about my time in Fatima and Medjugorje, I would like to testify! I will be giving a presentation at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 29th in St. Joseph s cafeteria. I will give the same presentation in Spanish on Thursday, November 2nd at 7:00 p.m. A Mass in Spanish will follow that day at 8:00 p.m. Pilgrimages are an important part of our Christian tradition. There are pilgrimages even in scriptures. Some of the psalms were written as songs to be sung on pilgrimage. Every year I like to lead a pilgrimage someplace. I plan to do this every year of my priesthood. I will keep you updated about any pilgrimages I do in the future. I would love to have you come!! This one I just did was through the Marian Center. Most of the pilgrims were from my former parish, since it was planned while I was there. It filled up so fast that few others had a chance to sign up after we opened up registration a year ago. Please know I prayed for you all a lot while I was at these holy sites. I prayed for our parishes to be put on fire by the Holy Spirit--for packed Masses, long confession lines, for families to pray together, for generosity on all our parts. I prayed for our beautiful school, that we will keep growing. I prayed for our youth to always embrace and love Jesus and his Church, and for vocations to the priesthood and religious life from our pews. I prayed for the Holy Spirit to always, eternally breathe new life into our parish. I prayed for many things. After 10:30 a.m. Mass this weekend, we have the dedication of our recently refurbished gym. What a blessing it is!!! Please plan to join us. Also--Reverse Raffle is November 4th after the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Be there!!! My prayers and love! Fr. Mike Dedication of the Cross Please plan to attend the Dedication of the Cross in the school gymnasium this Sunday, October 22nd immediately following the 10:30 a.m. Mass. There will be a brief procession from the church to the gym for the solemn blessing. All are encouraged to attend! Refreshments will be served and the school will be open for anyone wishing to tour it. The Gallagher Family recently donated funds to help with gym improvements which included a cross in honor of St. Joseph Catholic School's beloved secretary, Debbi Gallagher. Our Sunday Religious Education classes will also take part. After the dedication, we will have something of a field day on the green space for the kids. 6 St. Vincent News Sr. Joan s Corner Dear Parishioners, In this Sunday s Gospel reading, the Pharisees are trying to trap Jesus into saying something that can be construed as sedition against the Romans. Jesus points out that the coin had Caesar s image on it. The image of Caesar on the coin is an indication that the money is Caesar s. So Jesus says, Give to Caesar what is Caesar s and give to God what is God s. The other point of Jesus line is that each of us is God s because each of us bears on our souls the image of God. It is an honor to each one of us without exception. But it is also an awesome responsibility. When we disfigure our bodies with self-indulgence, when the face of a soul is twisted by envy or hatred or possessiveness, the image of God is warped. Who wants to be a person whose soul shows a distorted image of God? The same line of Jesus that leads to sorrow also can give us consolation. Just as Caesar s money belongs to Caesar, so we belong to God. We are his own. The God who made us in his image will not leave us in our sins. He offers mercy. This week as we talk to Jesus, talk about how we show the image of God to those around us. Sr. Joan Miller We joyfully share our gifts to nourish the community St. Vincent Purpose Statement October 15, 2017 Sunday Collection: $ 3, Children Collection: $ 5.50 Disaster Relief Collection: $ Praying the Rosary Please join us to pray the Rosary at St. Vincent Church on Wednesday, October 25th at 5:30 p.m. During the month of October, weather permitting, praying the Rosary will be held at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Fields. October is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery Endowment Fund Thank you to Tom and Norma Zobel for their donation to the St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery in memory of their ancestors. May we remember them in our prayers. The St. Vincent s Knights of Columbus, also, made a generous donation to the St. Vincent Cemetery Endowment Fund this month. Religious Education Classes St. Vincent Religious Education Classes will resume on Wednesday, October 25th. Treasures From Our Tradition What makes the Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children different from the others? First, there is the intended assembly, which is described as comprised of mostly children of school age. There are three Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children available to us now in the missal. The first one has a very simple form, easily grasped by even a young child. The second has a great deal of participation by the assembly repeated sung acclamations. The third has a number of variations that can be tricky for a priest to handle if he hasn t prepared carefully. All of this work does point to a true treasure of our tradition: children are part of the Sunday assembly, precisely because they are baptized members of Christ s body. By contrast, the churches of the Reformation tend to look upon children as members in training, and see worship as an adult activity. Sunday school happens downstairs while the adults celebrate Holy Communion upstairs. In a phrase, that s not Catholic. Children belong to Christ and to the assembly. So, the desire to care for the children in the assembly, to draw them into the prayer, and to adapt our rituals and texts to their needs is deeply Catholic, a true pastoral effort to help draw everyone into the praise of God.

7 World Mission Sunday Today is World Mission Sunday at St. Joseph and St. Vincent Churches. We will have a 2nd Collection on Saturday, October 21st and Sunday, October 22nd. Please take this opportunity to reach out in faith to more than two-thirds of the world s people who have yet to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ. Please be as generous as possible. Thank you for all you do for the Missions. Free Fall Book Study Have you been resisting using your Easter gift "Resisting Happiness"? Resist no longer. Now is the time to shake off the dust that has accumulated since the Lenten Book Study. The Fall Study will offer 2 options to grow in faith and happiness along with fellow members of our Shelby County Catholic Community. The Sunday class is at 11:45 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. and the Wednesday class is at 7:00-8:30 p.m. and continues for 5 more weeks. The classes will meet in the cafeteria of St. Joseph Church. You may still register by to Deacon Tom at thill@sjsshelbyville.org. DON'T RESIST - BE HAPPY! St. Joseph/St. Vincent News St. Joseph and St. Vincent Rite of Christian Initiation The next RCIA class will be on Monday, October 23rd at 7:00 p.m. at St. Vincent in the School Building. It is not to late to register. Please call St. Joseph s Parish Office at or St. Vincent s Parish Office at Everyone is welcome. Invite family and friends who may be interested in learning more about our Catholic Faith. We are in the inquiry stage - come and ask questions. Power Struggle Power struggles occur on every level of society, from the world stage to relationships at work, even to our own homes. We struggle for position in the hierarchy of power: Who has power over whom? How do they wield it? What is the source of that power? What is the healthy response? In this Sunday s Gospel reading, the Pharisees engage Jesus in a power struggle over whether Jews should show tribute to Caesar by paying taxes. Jesus response puts this and every struggle for power into perspective. In harmony with the words of Isaiah and Paul, Jesus teaches us that God is the ultimate source of all power the power of earthly rulers, the Pharisees, Jesus, the Church, and the power within ourselves.
