3 From the Desk of Fr. Mike Dear Friends, Today we welcome Fr. Bill Ernst! As some remember, Fr. Ernst served as pastor of St. Joe s from 1977 until He had been the associate pastor here a few years earlier, so it was a happy homecoming for him to be assigned as the pastor. We welcome him warmly today. I will always be thankful that Fr. Ernst was among the concelebrants at my first Mass a few years ago. I returned from pilgrimage last Thursday, but left shortly thereafter to do a wedding for a close childhood friend. He and I were friends in grade school, high school, and college. I will be back in time for the meet and greet with Principal Tush right after the 10:30 am Mass. All are invited to that. Many thanks to the PTO for planning it. Lots of things are revving up for the coming year school, family faith formation, bible studies, confirmation prep, etc. Watch the bulletin for many more details. I pondered many things on my pilgrimage. I will send out via flocknote my reflections, partly in the hopes that some of you might join one of the pilgrimages I lead in the future. One of the things I pondered is that life is so very, very short. Sometimes tragedies strike that bring this fact home very pointedly. But every moment is a gift. Life is simply too short to be nasty to each other. If you have an ax to grind, or a grudge you re holding onto, or some fear of this or that.let it go. And then love. My prayers and love! Fr. Mike Today s Readings First Reading When they had eaten, there was some left over, as the L had said (2 Kings 4:42-44). Psalm The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs (Psalm 145). Second Reading Strive to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:1-6). Gospel Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted (John 6:1-15). Ask Seminarian Owen Duckett Question: My adult daughter has left the practice of her Catholic Faith. I feel like I failed as a parent and this causes me much distress. What can I do? Answer: Though it is bitter in nature, you can take some consolation in the fact that you are by no means the first parent to suffer silently in this way. Consider the example of St. Monica who labored in prayer for years and years until her son, later St. Augustine (one of the greatest doctors of the Church), found the Faith. Your first priority as a parent is to not allow yourself to fall into despair. The Great Deceiver uses situations such as these to drag down two souls at once, first the poor son/daughter who has carelessly abandoned Mother Church, and then the loving and faithful parent who loses hope. Do not allow him to win you over too if you truly desire to help your child. And so following the example of St. Monica, use this cross as an opportunity to share in the sufferings of Christ and to be closer united to Him. Go to Mass as often as you possibly can and make an offering of yourself and all of these troubles to Christ, ask Him to take up these worries just as He bore our sins on Cavalry. Once you have obtained a strengthening of personal sanctity, continue to pray and offer little sacrifices daily for your child. Look for opportunities that the Holy Spirit may reveal to you by which you can replant the seeds of the Faith in your daughter s life. Pray to our Lord for very specific things, e.g. Lord please help N. to develop friendships in her work and personal life that will bring her back to you. Give her someone to set a good example of what it means to live the Catholic Faith so that she may embrace it again. Trust in the promise of our Lord at the end of Matthew s Gospel, Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Pray through the intercession of the saints and in particular Saint Monica and St. Jude (patron of desperate causes). We are instruments of God s grace, nothing more. Each person is given the grace necessary for salvation, some may simply require a bit more than others. God only permits trials for our own strengthening. Embrace this trial and find joy in the midst of suffering, something radically Christian after all. Do you have a question? Submit it online at stjoeshelby.org!

7 Sr. Joan s Corner Dear Parishioners, The prophet Elisha fed a hundred people with twenty barley loaves, and there were leftovers. Jesus fed about five thousand with five barley loaves and a couple of dried fish, and there were leftovers. That is God s desire for us: everyone should find food in abundance. Today s reality is different. Every three days more people die from malnutrition and disease than from the bombing of Hiroshima and every year more people die from preventable hunger than died in the Holocaust, even though we grow enough grain in the world to provide every person with a diet of 3000 calories. The problem is not with God s providence, for God provides us with enough food for everyone, and then some. The problem is the divisions in the world that prevents food from getting to people who need it. As Christians we are called to help feed the needy persons in our county and we can do this by helping through our St. Vincent de Paul Society and we need to also help to change the conditions that cause poverty and hunger by the way we vote. This week as we pray, pray for those who hunger for bread and justice.
