3 From the Desk of Fr. Mike Dear Friends, Today we welcome the Little Sisters of the Poor. They are here to ask for our help and support for their good works. I remember the Little Sisters of the Poor coming to my parish growing up. They came once a year. I always remember two things about them: they were always so nice, and they were always short!! Welcome Sisters we love you!! We ve got some great stuff in this bulletin. One page I m excited about is pages 3 & 4. Many of our students have written why they love St. Joe s School. You will also find in your bulletin a letter of thanks from a student at our school for your support. It has been a great Catholic School s Week. I am fiercely proud of our students and our school. Some needs have recently surfaced. Please let me know if you would like to take on any of these jobs around here: Lead a Mom s group Lead a Children s Liturgy of the Word for young people during the 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Masses. Lead a group that would make meals for parents who have just had a baby Usher coordinator Thanks! It takes a lot of hearts and hands to take care of things at St. Joe s. Josue these are so many nice people here and a lot of my friends. We have so many cool ac vi es we do throughout the year. I love St. Joe. Logan T the teachers are awesome, the people here are nice, and our priest Fr. Mike and Ms. Ceil have rosary club with us. Cooper T we get to go to church. Ever our priest, Fr. Mike, is funny. Leah we go to church even on school days. Brooklyn it is a church. Lauren we have Fr. Mike as a priest and everyone loves everyone here. Emily the teachers give us knowledge and they really care about us. Alivea we get to go to church. Molly J we have many fun things, like Catholic Schools Week. Tyler I have so many wonderful friends here. Maria G we get to praise God together. Charlie the teachers are nice. Paul because we are all friends here. John D because of the cool priest Father Mike. Carson we can pray here. Cole no one makes fun of you and everyone is always nice, you are taught religion, teachers are understanding, and our priest is funny! Naomi the teachers are great and our priest teaches religion class. Nick every teacher is so nice, I have great friends, and because there is religion with Fr. Mike. Brandon M I have the best teacher ever. Taylor everyone is a friend here, I am happy here, and we have a good priest. Emily you get a great educa on. Emma W people are very nice here. Rogelio I love to go to Mass. Elly we go to Mass during school. Moises I love to learn about God in school. Brianna I love to pray with my friends. Daniel I love to learn about God here. Camden I love going to church. Myla I love to go to Mass. Kalani I love my friends. Eden I love to play with my friends. Edwin I love to learn about God. Brody I love to go to church and play outside. America everyone is nice. Mia we get to learn. Jocelyn it helps me learn. Molly B I like to learn about God. Abby people are nice and I love God. Jenavieve I like to play and pray with my friends. Mauricio the children of this school are a constant reminder of how to love Christ with your whole heart. They get what our faith calls us to do, which is to love and serve others. They understand that in doing this, they are loving and serving Him! Mrs. Fewell there is an atmosphere of faith, family and love here that we all get to live in every day and a huge hunger and enthusiasm for God in the hearts of everyone here. Fr. Mike

5 Youth Group Super Bowl Party Youth group will start at 6:30 this Sunday because the Super Bowl starts at 6:30. All high school students are welcome to come watch the super bowl in the youth room comfy couches, big screen and good people! All are welcome. Food will be provided. Youth Group Meeting Schedule February Lock in at St. Joseph - 7:30 p.m. - 7:30 a.m. St. Joseph 150th History Growth Is Constant in Early St. Joseph Parish The handwritten archives of St. Joseph parish mention growth in the Catholic community over and over again. In 1886, St. Joseph s Congregation having meanwhile increased considerably, received Rev. Adelrich Kaelin as permanent pastor on July 7, At that time, other areas were attached to St. Joseph as missions. St. John s in Acton was attached as a mission to be attended to by Rev. Kaelin twice a month. For eight years, he attended Acton, he had to say Mass, most of the time, after twelve o clock. The congregation consisted of 25 families with a debt of $7,000 that was paid off by the end of Rail Road facilities becoming unfavorable to go thither, Acton was hereforth, from Dec. 1894, attended from Indianapolis. The first work Fr. Kaelin undertook was the building of a pastor s house. It started in September. Father moved in on Nov. 10. The house was of necessity so small, for want of ground, that a kitchen was not built. He took his meals at the hotel from 1886 until A most encouraging event also occurred in There was a rail road switch which passed in front of the schoolhouse up to the corner of the church. Through the efforts of the Honorable K. M. Hord and Fr. Kaelin, the switch was removed in September, which put the church property at once into a respectable surrounding. The congregation s cash outlay for the removal was about $50. St. Joseph News St. Joseph Memorabilia The museum display at Grover Museum should be open mid-february. Holy Hour Please join us on February 6th from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. for an hour of Eucharistic Adoration to pray for many young people to open their hearts to hear God calling them to service in the Church. All are welcome to come pray for vocations! Giving Tree The Giving Tree has been filled with red tags to help offset the costs of the dinner for the Feast of St. Joseph. 7 Sr. Joan s Corner Dear Parishioners, In this Sunday s Gospel reading, Jesus comes to Peter s house and finds that Peter s motherin-law is sick. Jesus heals her and the word gets around. Before long all of the sick of the village are at his door. Jesus heals many of them way into the night. And then Jesus slips off to a deserted place to rest and pray. We can learn a lesson with just that much of the story: we can t continue doing any good without prayer. The story continues with the apostles finding him and letting him know there are more people waiting to be cured, but Jesus knows from his prayer that he was not called to the medical profession. He was called to preach. So he goes on to other towns to spread the Good News. This week, the Sisters of St. Francis from all across the country are coming back to Oldenburg for what we call a Chapter of Affairs. For five days we will pray together and listen to the Holy Spirit. We will decide what the mission of the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, will be for the next six years. So, this week as you take time to pray, pray and listen to what the Holy Spirit wants you to do each day. I also ask you to remember the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, in your prayers that we will get a clear direction. Thank you. 8 Second Collection This weekend, February 3rd and February 4th, the Little Sisters of the Poor from Indianapolis will be at our parish seeking support for their ministry to the elderly poor. Continuing the work of Saint Jeanne Jugan, their Mission is to offer the neediest elderly of every race and religion a home where they will be welcomed as Christ, cared for as family and accompanied with dignity until God calls them to himself. Today s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the self-sacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world.
