3 From the Desk of Fr. Mike Dear Friends, Merry Christmas to all! A warm welcome to all visitors who are here with us today in this beautiful church. We come together to celebrate that God has come to dwell amongst us. A Savior has been born! And his name is JESUS. I wonder what it was like that first Christmas in Bethlehem. Depending on which translator you ask, the word Bethlehem actually means house of meat or house of bread. Both work. After all, Jesus called himself the bread of life and tells us that whoever eats his flesh and drinks his blood will have eternal life. It makes a lot of sense that Jesus would be born in a place called Bethlehem. You see, I often reflect on the connection between the manger and the altar. Jesus comes in the Eucharist to every Catholic altar around the world, just as surely as he came to the crib at Bethlehem some 2000 years ago. Some of the shepherds probably went to the crib, less out of devotion and faith, but just to check it out. Maybe some went because everyone else was. It s the same today. Some people come to Christmas Mass only because it s a good show or because the rest of the family goes and we do it every year. Some of the shepherds who came out of idle curiosity, though their lives were changed. I pray the same for everyone here today. Let Jesus be born in your heart today, no matter what brought you here, or whether you re 15 or 25 or 40 or 100 years old. Jesus wants something to do with you. He wants a lot to do with you. If you ve been away from church for a while, I invite you to come home on a regular basis. I want you back. Jesus wants you back. Because our parishes are really something. We are the body of Christ here in Shelbyville, and it s a happy place to be. It is a joy and an honor, as a priest, to see all that is done here in the name of Jesus. Thanks to everyone for the part you play in the body of Christ. Pray for me and the rest of us going on the Texas Hurricane Relief Mission Trip. We leave at 5:00 a.m. on December 26th and get back late on the January 2nd. You have a holy and good priest from Baltimore (his mother lives nearby) coming to sub for me in my absence. My prayers and love! Fr. Mike Catechesis Corner by Fr. Mike Confession Tip #2 Number and Kind Last week we discussed the importance of using the past tense in our confessions (e.g., I gossiped instead of sometimes I gossip ). Today, let s recall that the Church teaches that, in confession, we should say number and kind. That is, we name the sin (e.g., I missed Sunday Mass ) and then we say how many times we did it. There is a big difference in missing ONE Sunday Mass and missing FIFTY Sunday Masses. This is true for all our sins. This is good incentive to make regular confessions. If we wait a whole year, we probably won t be able to know how many times we said a lie, or how many times we ate too much, or gossiped. We lose count. If that is the case, and it has been a while since you went to confession, you ought to give a ballpark (e.g., I lost my temper with my husband at least once a day since my last confession, or, I did about once a week since my last confession ). You can see the wisdom of the Church s teaching here. First, this helps to encourage us to make more frequent confessions. Second, if we keep count we are less likely to fall into sins. It s much like a basketball player who remembers how many points or rebounds he got last game, and works to improve his numbers for next time. 6 Sr. Joan s Corner Dear Parishioners, A blessed Christmas season to you! It has been since 2006 since Christmas Eve has been on a Sunday. It confuses everyone, but the first time Jesus came, Bethlehem was in confusion because there were so many travelers present. Just like last week the readings were about joy. This Sunday the readings are about a promise from God that will last forever. Jesus came to transform that promise. We are very close to Christmas. What would a world be like if Jesus was our leader? Would we have poverty and homelessness? Would we need to have the death penalty? Would there be child abuse and neglect of the elderly? Would Jesus allow people of his kingdom to kill each other in wars? If only we could join in consenting to God s rule as Mary did: Let it be done to me as you say. Who knows what joy the world would know? May you take time this week to sit by your Christmas Crib and pray for peace in our families and in our world; the peace that Jesus came to give us.
