1 First District News O h i o C h r i s t i a n U n i o n S e p t e m b e r U n i o n B e n to n v i l l e C. U. We had a busy August and was blessed with a large crowd on Sunday, August 12th to hear Mike Anderson. What a blessing to see Mike and his wife and how his children had grown up. We had around 65 children and adults. The Clowns for Christ out of Maysville, Ky were a great hit with the children. They do a marvelous job with their skit about Jesus. We collected 278 bags of microwave popcorn for the Community Care Center in Manchester in the month of August. The King's Daughters Class will meet September 6th at Pat McFarland's home at 11:30 am. Our lesson will be on Simon Peter (Mark 1:16-20, 8:27-38). Everyone welcome. We are collecting boxes of tissues for the Manchester Community Care Center in the month of September. The Harvest Festival in Bentonville will be September 8th & 9th. The parade will be on Saturday, September 8th. The church plans to have a float. On Sunday morning at 11:00 am we will host the combined Community Church Services. All three churches will participate and we hope to have a big crowd. It is always a blessing to worship together. Everyone is welcome. We have several things planned for October when we think of Halloween and Pastor Appreciation month. Lots of fun. Our Sunday School picnic will be on September 23rd at Lake Adams. Marjorie Swearingen reported on the State Council which was held in Greenfield. Phil and Becky Hawkins also attended and Becky sang. We appreciate them for representing our church. Daniel Thompson from Portsmouth, OH was our speaker for the morning service on August 12th. We were pleased to have Jim Rhoades worship with us. He is the son of the late Rev. Lawrence and Marjorie Rhoades. Terry Fite was our speaker for the evening service. There was an Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Workshop in the Fellowship Hall on Thursday evening, August 16th. Barb Lanctot, the Area Co-coordinator, spoke about the eternal impact of a shoebox. Thanks to all who attended. Now is a good time to get started buying items to put in your boxes. It is a fun way to serve the Lord. Pastor Lee's birthday was August 28th. We pray that God blessed him with a good day. Wednesday evening Bible Study has just started on the book of Isaiah. Everyone is welcome. Starting time is 7:00 pm. Corbett and Carol Phipps are hosting a cookout on the river on Friday evening, September 7th. Our whole congregation has been invited to bring a covered dish and come enjoy the food, fun and fellowship. There will be a planning meeting for the Adams County Youth Rally in the Fellowship Hall on Monday, September 10th at 7:00 pm. As always your prayers and support are appreciated. The Singles and Doubles Sunday School class will host their annual Coats for Kids auction in the Fellowship Hall on Saturday evening, October 6th. Soup and sandwiches will be served at 5:00 pm and the auction will start at 6:00 pm. Jeff Newman will be the auctioneer. Everyone is welcome. The food is free and the money from the auction will be used to buy coats for needy children in the county. Chad & Mandy Swearingen 9/22 Pastor: Lee Dettwiller Reporter: Linda Ralston
3 H i l l s C h a p e l BACK TO SCHOOL desire for churches to pray for their district. Its that time of year again where all the kids are sad, parents are celebrating and impatient drivers are mad because of the flashing lights stopping at every mailbox. In preparation for students returning to school, we had the opportunity to sponsor the prayer around Northwest Local Schools and host a back to school celebration at Otway Community Park. Both were well attended and a blessing to be a part of. I have attended the prayer around Northwest Schools for most of the last 20 years. During this time, a few teachers, administrators, and board members attend. This year we had the privilege of praying over each board member at Northwest. I am thankful for their support and MARK YOUR CALENDARS Men s Harvest Dinner Oct. 20th Mt. Hope Bible Camp Speaker: Mickey Bane Director of Domestic Missions with SCORE International We are also thankful for churches in other school districts joining in prayer around their schools as well. This year instead of just prayer at Northwest Schools, there was also prayer around Valley Schools, Minford Schools, and Portsmouth West Schools. It was truly a blessing to see the body of Christ come together for a common purpose. You often hear people say God needs to be back in our schools. We wholeheartedly agree. A first step in seeing that happen is organize or participate in prayer around your local schools. Matt. 18:20 says that where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them. Be a part of having Him back in your district.
4 C o r n e r s to n e C h r i s t i a n U n i o n Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might. Ecclesiastes 9;10 To the work! To the work! We are servants of God, Let us follow the path that our Master has trod; With the balm of His counsel our strength to renew Let us do with our might what our hands find to do. ---Fanny Crosby--- Our Monthly Missionary Offering will be collected on Sunday morning September 2 nd. The Meeting of the West Union Helping Hands will be held on Thursday morning, September 13 th in the Fellowship Hall at 10:00. The Bible Lesson will be by Thelma Knechtly. On Friday, September 7 th, the Helping Hands will be having a Bake Sale at Prather s IGA. Money raised from the sale will help in the monthly support of 3 Missionary Families, The Troop Box Ministry, and King of Kings Radio. Our Annual Soup Supper and Auction for the three Missionary Families that we support monthly, will be on Friday night, October 26 th, with serving time starting at 4:00 P.M. Cornerstone is scheduled to host the First District Council in October. Those celebrating Birthdays during the month of September are: Justin Thomas, 3 rd ; Christian Danner, 4 th ; Ed Harmon, 9 th ; Bob Beery, 15 th ; Brooklyn Rothwell, 29 th ; Mandi Pease, 30 th. A good test for conversation: If you wouldn t write it and sign your name to it--- don t say it. In the morning, when it is difficult to get up, think of all the people who can t. The woods would be silent if no birds sang except those that sang best. ---Authors Unknown--- PASTOR: Cliff Stevens Reporter: Pat Stevens SCHEDULE OF CHURCH SERVICES Sunday School Sunday Morning Worship Sunday Evening Worship 9:30 A.M. 10:30 A.M. 6:00 P.M. 5 Beasley Fork Christian Union We ve begun planning our annual Fall Fun Day and Hayride. We re planning some fun things for the kiddos, and also a good time and some yumminess for the adults too! Most importantly, we re praying for God s direction in our planning and an opportunity to plant a seed or reach someone in need of the Gospel. We are especially lifting up in prayer our pastor, Tommy Brown, and his wife, Jackie. May we remember to pray diligently for our pastors and their spouses. And, may God bless these special people for their service and faithfulness. We are also sending up special prayers for our shut-ins: Dorothy McCarty, Mary Lou Grooms, and Grace Young. We pray for God s comfort, presence and peace for them. We love them and miss them. Others on our prayer list are: Martha Ralston, Fred McCarty, Wanda McCarty, Loretta Porter, Phyllis Spires, Mike & Charlene Grooms, Ruth Brown, Millie Hayslip, Roger Trefz, and Eric Morgan, Janice M. McCarty, Frances Ward, Jo Ann Stricklett, Betty Jo Hackworth Family. We have someone celebrating a special birthday this month. To Martha Ralston, wishes for a Very HAPPY 95th Birthday on the 6th.
