2 imagine Ministry April 20, 2010 Romans 12:1-8, Everyone is called to the sacrifice of transformation, and each person has a part to play in building up the church. Worship Opportunities 8:30 am & 10:45 am Solid Grounds 9:00 am Sunday School 9:30 am April 25 Acts 9:26-43 Psalm 23 Revelation 7:9-17 John 10:22-30 May 2 Acts 11:1-18 Psalm 148 Revelation 21:1-6 John 13:31-35 I recently attended a meeting called by Bishop Crutchfield regarding a new conversation happening in the Arkansas Conference. There is a problem with how churches are doing ministry. The numbers are dramatic. We are losing people to the secular world at an alarming pace. However, we hope and pray that changes can be made that will help reverse this trend. We need to remember that adage The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same things over & over and expecting different results. The Bishop gave us a homework assignment. Take the video back to the local church and answer the following questions for Annual Conference in June. What hope does your congregation find in looking at the future in a different way? What worries your congregation the most about this conversation regarding the future? What are some ways your local church can act differently to realize the hopes we have for our future? This is our assignment. We have a mission and I am confident that this church will be able to provide some helpful feedback to the Bishop. I look forward to hearing what you have to say about this and remember we have to submit this in a written report, so write your thoughts down and give them to Herlan Westra or myself. 3 From Your Staff Parish Relations Committee: Good Tidings fellow Trinity members. I hope this note finds you basking in God s abundance of blessings. As your SPR chair, I want to thank you all for the support you continue to show Trinity and Robin during her Leave of Absence. I have contended for years that when the chips are down in someone's life, our members rise to the challenge in love and support of that someone. This is another fine example to solidify that hypothesis. As for our plans during this three month period, we are off to a tremendous start. Thus far, two guest preachers (Rev. J.J. Whitney of Hendrix College and Rev. Roy Smith from the Conference Office) have shared great, challenging messages during our "Summer Preaching Series." Those able preachers yet to come include: Rev. Wayne Clark (also from Hendrix College), Rev. Maxine Allen (from the Wesley Foundation at UALR), Rev. Phil Hathcock (our District Superintendent), Rev. Betsy Singleton (formerly of Quapaw Quarter UMC), and Dr. Michael Roberts (of the Conference Office). Some of these individuals will fill our pulpit more than once. We are highly appreciative of all who are willing to share their gifts through leadership in Sunday worship. Robin is personally thrilled with the "line-up," and knows Trinity will be blessed -- and ultimately invigorated -- through this series. Many of you have asked what you can do to help Robin during this time. Right now, the very best thing you can do for her is to attend worship regularly, and keep your pledges coming in. I can promise you, Robin will worry less about her absence when she knows you are continuing in your support of the church she loves so much. *A special note of thanks must be included to our staff. Without exception, they are doing an excellent job picking up the proverbial slack. And, we express our gratitude to Rev. Phil Hathcock and the Central District for paying a stipend to each guest preacher in order to keep this Leave of Absence cost neutral for Trinity. Rev. Hathcock has worked very hard to work out the preaching schedule, and to simplify the logistics during this period. If you ever need me or wish to chat, please feel free to call me at In your service, Joe Carter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TRINITY YOUTH SAMARITAN PROJECT Thanks to the youth and Lauren, our youth counselor, for participating in the Trinity Youth Samaritan Project on April10th! Our youth group partnered with Melissa Muse and the ALS Association Walk folks to help support and bring about awareness of this terrible disease. We had absolutely beautiful weather and there were over 800 people at Dickey Stephens Ballpark to walk in support of this great cause. Our youth, as part of our Samaritan project, helped direct folks where to go, cheered with pom poms (nice routine girls) those walking, and then we manned the kids play area where we helped control the blow up bounce slide, kept an eye on the playground for the little ones and helped with face painting and tattoos. A BIG thank you and even BIGGER, "I am proud of you all!" for coming out and sharing the love of Jesus by helping volunteer and represent our awesome church and youth group! Good Job!

4 Miracle Team Update SUCCESSFUL RUMMAGE SALE!!! Trinity s Miracle Team is excited to report that $6,356 was made at Trinity s recent Rummage Sale held March 27 th. ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING Trinity raised $ through March Communion Rail Offerings to support administrative costs of UMCOR. Because of United Methodist Support during this special collection, 100% of UMCOR donations at times of disaster go to the named relief effort. Thanks again, Trinity! 2010 LENTEN OFFERING Your generous Lenten Offering of $5, is much appreciated and will be distributed as follows: $2,000 Central Conference Pension Initiative, to assist retired Methodist ministers and their widows living in severe poverty, primarily in Africa; $1, Wesley Foundation of UALR, to assist with a new roof; and $1, Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Pulaski County, to assist single parents attending college and pursue their dreams. Thanks for once again sharing with those in need. OUR HOUSE DINNER SERVICE Preparing and serving dinner at Our House is fun and rewarding and it serves a need in our community. Thanks to Transitions Class for March and Earthen Vessel/Boanerges for April! There are available service times on Second Sundays in June, July, October, and December. Dinner is served at 6:00. Sign up on Miracle Team Bulletin Board, or contact Cindy Crone at THIS OLDE CHURCH The Miracle Team is exploring short, day-long mission trips to assist with repair projects at Arkansas Methodist Churches in need. Let the church office know your skill and availability. Watch for future announcements on specifics. BOAZ S MARKETPLACE OPEN FOR BUSINESS So, what do the citizens of Believers' Village do with the "wealth" they acquire and save each Sunday? On a quarterly basis, they travel to Boaz's marketplace to shop! We all know Boaz as the husband of Ruth and son-inlaw of Naomi. But, did you know that he made his millions through his chain of marketplaces (check Formica 4:20-21 for authenticity)? Our young Village citizens save their "wealth" (in the form of silver and gold coins received for attending Sunday School and extra Christian outreach) and buy their wares from the traveling marketplace. They even have to have their "Boaz" card (in the shape of the Christian fish symbol) hole-punched according to their purchases. Keeping with our Biblical theme concerning stewardship, our citizens are required to tithe 10% of their income before they may make purchases! We always want to thank our shopkeepers Mimi Hyatt and Astrid Elliott and our tithe collector Anna Kumpuris. Our next marketplace visit will occur in June. Just another way to encourage attendance and growth in Believers' Village... Mr. Paul

7 Earth Day s 40 th Anniversary!! Earth Day will be 40 years old on April 22, When Earth Day was first celebrated the New York Times wrote that "rising concern about the 'environmental crisis' is sweeping the nation's campuses with an intensity that may be on its way to eclipsing student discontent over the war in Vietnam." It is 40 years later and we are still trumpeting a call to arms in the fight to save our environment. Have things changed in the 40 years since the first Earth Day? Here are but a few things that have happened nationally since April 22, 1970: In December of the same year the Environmental Protection Agency was created September 16, 1987: Twenty-four countries, including the U.S., sign the Montreal Protocol, agreeing to phase out ozone-depleting chemicals June 3 to 14, 1992: The Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro draws representatives from 172 governments August 2000: The first Toyota Prius hybrid car is sold in this country February 16, 2005: The Kyoto Protocol, aimed at reducing greenhouse-gas emissions, goes into effect. It is ratified by 141 nations -- but not the U.S These are just a few things that have happened since that first Earth Day. On a local level we can see things have changed on a daily basis. We have curbside recycling, reusable bags at most stores, CFL bulbs available throughout many different types of stores and so very much more. We have banded together and are working towards making this planet better for future generations. Happy Earth Day 2010, and here s to many, many more. WE WANT TO KNOW If you know of a Trinity member that has been hospitalized or has surgery scheduled, please let the church office know. We don t know unless someone tells us!! PART TIME POSITON AVAILABLE Our current daytime janitor will be leaving us because he is moving to Florida. He has been a great asset to Trinity! Now we need to find someone to fill his shoes. If you know anyone that is interested in a part-time position and has the ability to clean, set up tables and chairs, do minor plumbing repairs and small maintenance repairs please let SPR or Laura Hales know and we can make sure that person has an application to complete. If you are around the church in the daytime and see Ray please let him know how much we have appreciated his hard work! Saturday, April 24th 3:00~6:00pm Church parking lot and Martin Hall ~sponsored by Trinity's Family Council and friends! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Preschool Open House 2010 On the evening of April 13 Trinity Methodist Preschool celebrated its Open House/Fundraiser with classroom visits, a silent auction, carnival games and fun carnival style food. The children were treated to various games and photo opportunities while their parents shopped for good deals on all sorts of fun auction items and gift certificates. A fun time was had by all and the preschool was able to raise needed funds to help off-set the cost of the new infant playground. If you have not seen the new infant playground, please make some time to check it out, it is located just outside of the school s administrative office. The preschool has extended its hours and has so many new and exciting things going on. Grab someone you know from the preschool and you may be surprised at just what great things are going on over there! The Chefs at Jacob s Famous Hot Dogs One of the preschool families

In this way our stewardship reaches far beyond the walls of the local church. The offering plate also serves as a reminder that our stewardship must not be limited to our checkbooks. Our time is valuable to the Kingdom, as well. The volunteers in the life and work of the church set an example for us. They have learned that stewardship is a full commitment of time, talents and resources to God. Rev. Barron s Emergency #
