1 GRANDVIEW UNITED METHODIST CHURCH THE MESSENGER October 2016 Greetings Grandview UMC Family & Friends Pastor Judy s Musings... October welcomes important events in the life of our congregation. I encourage you to support them with your prayers and participation. If you are not able to attend in person, encourage others to be present. Congregational Conversation & Holy Communion Sunday, October 2 at 9:00am-11:00am in the sanctuary You are invited and encouraged to participate in this important event when we will begin an open, intentional, courageous conversation about our future. We will begin with singing and prayer. We will share information, ask questions, and listen to one another as we consider the future of our congregation. We will be sent forward as we share the sacrament of communion together. Please Note: Our typical Sunday schedule is different for this one Sunday. Our Council decided that Sunday morning is the best time to include the most people in the conversation. Finances will not be a focal point of our discussion, though we will share a brief, positive financial report. We will not make any decisions. We will listen to God and to one another as we consider how God is calling us forward. Such an important task warrants this schedule change for one Sunday. Please make it your priority to attend. Robin Roderick as guest preacher and celebrate United Methodist Women Potluck Luncheon Fried chicken provided. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share! I am thankful and proud to be your pastor. The week just doesn t seem to go right without it. Sunday morning worship at 10:00am is the primary way we connect with God and with one another as people of faith. Through worship we are encouraged and spiritually equipped to care, grow, and share the love of Jesus Christ every day with everyone we meet. Renew your commitment to be present in worship and invite family, friends and neighbors to join you. Daytime Bible Study Thursdays 12:30-2pm church lounge The Upper Room Disciplines devotional study guides our discussion. Bring your own Bible or use one from the shelf at church. Talk with Pastor Judy. 110 th Anniversary T-Shirts We re ordering t-shirts to wear and share our pride and enthusiasm as we celebrate our church s anniversary. The first order of t-shirts was submitted on Tuesday, September 27. If you would like to be added to the next order, please contact Alessa in the church office (alessa.gumc@yahoo.com or ). Sunday Bible Study with the Pathfinders Sundays at 9:00am all purpose room Book of Daniel begins October 9 You are invited to join the Pathfinder s Class as they begin studying the book of Daniel on October 9. Mark your calendar for our next Sil- Festival of Sharing is October 15 Donations due ASAP Our UMW collects the items listed below to benefit Festival of Sharing, an ecumenical mission effort. For more information about the items, please see the UMW bulletin board in the hallway or contact Joan Bandy. Donations should be placed in the pink basket across the hallway from the church office. Aluminum Cans put in Pink basket across from church office Eyeglasses - put in Pink basket across from church office Best Choice UPC - put in envelope on UMW bulletin board Church Council Meetings 6:30pm October 27 and December 1 The Council works with our Pastor, leading our congregation to fulfill our mission and vision, uphold our values, and accomplish our goals. All are welcome to join the conversation! If you have questions, concerns or ideas to share, talk with Pastor Judy or Della Turner, so that we can include items for discussion on September Worship Attendance Contest Results Everyone who was present for worship every Sunday during the month of September (4 out of 4 Sundays) had their name submitted into a drawing for one free 110 th Anniversary T-Shirt. Thanks and congratulations to the 21 people who had perfect worship attendance during September. Congratulations to Bill Ray for winning the free t-shirt and thanks to Bill for THANK YOU for supporting the UMW Fall Rummage & Bake Sale $1,000 was raised for mission for children and women in our local community and around the world Charge Conference / Cluster Conference Sunday, October 23 Charge Conference is an annual meeting held with the Heartland District Superintendent, Rev. Jim Simpson. This year our charge conference will be held with six other churches from our area. All members of our church are invited to attend at St. Luke s UMC (9420 James A Reed Rd, Kansas City, MO 64138). 6:00pm Pastor Parish Training Our Prayers: If you have a prayer request, please complete a Prayer Request Card or contact the church office ( or alessa.gumc@yahoo.com). Let us pray for our congregation, our community, and our ministry together. God grant us the vision to see the plans for your church, and the courage and boldness to pursue them.

4 LAVAUN FLETCHER IS TURNING 100!! Her family will be celebrating on Sunday, October 23 and invite everyone to send a card! (No gifts please.) Cards can be sent to: 1014 S. Prairie Lane Watch Ministry Program We are looking for donations of inexpensive wrist watches (men s or women s) with dead batteries to be used in our Watch Ministry Program. Our goal is to replace the dead batteries and provide them FREE to Medicaid nursing home residents who cannot afford to buy them. They can also be used as Medicaid nursing home Bingo prizes. If you have any inexpensive wrist watches that you wish to have returned we will, at your option, replace the batteries free of charge and return 2 out of every 3 working watches to you. We will keep 1 out of each three working watches for distribution in our program.
