1 Au g u st 10, 2010 Dear Friends, A woodcutter took his grandson into the forest for his first experience in selecting and cutting oak trees to be sold to boat builders. As they walked, the woodcutter explained that for building a boat, the purpose of each tree can be found in its natural shape: some are straight, and can be used for planks, some have curves that are right for the ribs of the boat, while some trees are very tall and thin, and can be used to hold the sails. A little way into the forest the grandson spotted a huge old oak tree that had never been cut. He asked his grandfather if he could cut it down. Obviously it was no good for boat building. The limbs twisted and turned, good for neither sails nor ribs. The trunk was short and gnarled, useless for planks. We could use it for firewood, said the boy. At least it would be good for that. The grandfather moved on about the business of finding trees for boats, telling the boy they would perhaps return later and talk about it again. After several hours, the grandson grew tired, and asked if they could stop and rest in the shade. The woodcutter took the boy to the old oak tree, where they rested against its gnarled trunk, beneath the twisted limbs. As they rested, the woodcutter began to explain to his grandson how important it is to pay attention to everything in the forest, and more so, in the world. The purpose of some things is easy to find. Others require a closer attention to find how they might be used. And still other things, even upon close inspection, appear to have no purpose at all, such as the old oak tree. For this old tree, the grandfather said, which you so quickly decided was useless except for firewood, now allows us to rest against its trunk amidst the coolness of its shade. We must be patient, pay attention, learn to recognize and discover God s goodness in all things created by Him. Some of us go through our entire lives without paying attention to the wonder of God s creation. Especially when we re young, we re busy. We re working to raise our families; to earn a living; to save for retirement; to get ahead of the game. It s easy to overlook the little things. It s easy to miss the butterfly on the tulip in the garden, or the crickets singing in the cool night air. Those things are not unnecessary details the tulips, the butterflies, the crickets and the cool nights. They aren t extras. They play an important part in God s world: they bring beauty; they create wonder in a child s mind; they bring joy to the hearts of those who take the time to see and hear them. They have purpose. Everything and everyone has purpose. It s up to us not only to realize our own potential, but to slow down our crazy lives long enough to see the value, beauty and purpose in everything around us. Think about it. Then Spread the Word. Sing-Alongs and Other Special Music LET S TALK No doubt about it, most of us are caught up in a whirlwind. Between the demands of work (inside and outside the home) and church & civic responsibilities, those of us with children and grandchildren seem to meet ourselves coming and going school, dance, soccer, swimming, baseball...the list seems endless. But as people, as Christians, as parents, most of us are doing the best we can. Right? What if our best can be better? That s exactly what we want to talk about during the first of four Let s Talk sessions to take place at Trinity through the year. On September 1 st, help us help you chart pathways through concerns you face on a daily basis; those issues that threaten the stability of your family, and leave you exhausted and anxiety-riddled. We ll begin with a fish fry in Martin Hall (5-6 p.m.), to be followed by an informal Town Meeting-style talk (6-7 p.m.). We support TUMC by our Prayers Mariann Clark (daughter of Fay and Willie Southern), Jan Barnett, Katherine Powell (cousin of Lew Elmore), Harper J. 3 Summer in the Village! So, what do the citizens of the Believers' Village experience between major rotations? The first part of this summer has focused on following the Summer Sermon Series. Hopefully, you notice a common thread which runs through our Sunday School lessons, the Children's Moments theme, our music during Worship, and the sermon. An example of this topic sequence is pictured below. On a recent study, the children learned about the Good Samaritan and how to help those in need. Two of our 4th grade citizens, Ashlyn Tunnell and Haley Burnett, set up a lemonade stand to sell a cool drink during the recent hot July days to those in need, and collected $20.00 to be donated to Trinity's Brady Adopt-A-School program. On another study, we learned about the "Parable of the Rich Fool" and the idea of greed. Instead of leaving the Village with a token to remember the topic for the Sunday, our young citizens wrapped 20 small gifts for the children living on the campus of the Arkansas Methodist Children's Home. Maggie Beeler, a director at the Children's Home, accepted the gifts and delivered them to the children. Good things continue to happen all over Trinity. Please visit Believers' Village to see our children in action and in ministry. Children who had great attendance during the first six weeks of summer include first graders Hope Burnett, Joe Carter, and Audrey Hampson, second graders Jackson Gilbert, Kirby Keel, and Nicholas Schaefer, third graders Callie Epps, Elizabeth Hofman, Emma Jackson, Sean Oury, and Simon Trussell, and fourth graders Haley Burnett, Anna Hampson, Sidney Hyatt, and Benjamin Trussell. Please thank the following helpers who lead the children in their faith journey Pam and Ben Gilbert, Alison Chambers, Tina Collins, Dean Hicks, and Susan Jackson. Our youngest angels in God's Garden of Angels who have achieved our great attendance award include Sarah Hampson, Lauren Smith, Brette Burnett, Colin Norman, Rebekah Jackson, and Luke Carter. Leaders in the Garden include Becky Owen, Marcia Buxbaum, Kathy and Carson Hampson, Becca Smith, Lisa McGee, Kelly Greenlee, Judy Gribble, and Laurie Norman. Come be part of our world! There were only a few changes to the plans. Mike McWilliams and Dottie Fulmer are looking for a suitable fountain. Financing is complete and helped by an additional generous gift from Dottie and the late John Fulmer. Construction will start soon, but no firm date has been set at this time. Randy Stocks has done so much to get the Columbarium off the ground and will be talking with the firm that will do the construction in order to clear up a few details. I am sure everyone is anxious to see this project get started. It has taken a long time. The Columbarium will be a beautiful addition to Trinity United Methodist Church and a wonderful way to remember those who have gone before us. Joe Wall
5 Brady Teacher Snack Time Hello! I am Diann Brumback and I have taken on the task of getting snacks for the teachers and staff of Brady Elementary School for the up coming school year. I need your help. My thoughts are that midweek would be nice but certainly any day you choose would be fine. I need volunteers for one time each month and I will be happy to help any of you that so graciously offer yourself for this job. This could be a Sunday school project or an individual who would like to help. The staff at Brady appreciates everything that Trinity United Methodist Church does for them and the snacks are really special to them! Suzanne is a missionary with the Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church serving at the Ganta Medical Complex in Ganta, Liberia. From Suzanne worked in a medical facility and with a community development program in Central Asia. The focus of that program is the delivery of medical care, training assistant nurses and improving the health of the people living in remote and underserved mountain villages. A pediatric nurse practitioner by training, Suzanne s responsibilities included providing primary health care to children, supervision of the nurses in the hospital and training new nurse assistants to work in the clinic and the hospital. For part of the time she was project leader to the 68 national staff and 7 expatriate staff. In January 2007 Suzanne arrived in Liberia, West Africa, at the Ganta Medical Complex ( to focus on the school of nursing. Of her assignment she says, It is hard to leave the people I have worked with over the past five years but I see God s plan for my time here both for the contributions I made to the project and in the growth my personal relationship with Him. The verse that speaks to me about this is from Esther 4:14 where Mordicai says to her perhaps you have come... for just a time as this. So, while I am sad I also leave with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction and take with me to Liberia the valuable experience I gained while serving in Central Asia. Prior to her mission ministry Suzanne worked at the Johns Hopkins Hospital s Adolescent Clinic where her responsibility was for the primary health care of teenage mothers and their infants. Other nursing experience were in the Johns Hopkins Hospital Pediatric Emergency Room and the Pediatric ICU of the University of Maryland Hospital. A member of Reisterstown United Methodist Church in Reisterstown, Maryland, Suzanne has one adult daughter, Becky.

Grace & Peace, Kirk & Jennifer Dear Trinity UMC, Thank you so much for your recent donation to the Food Pantry. I can t remember ever having a contribution this large. To say I m thrilled is putting it mildly. We appreciate your continued support of this mission. Sincerely, Martha Johnson Quapaw Quarter United Methodist ADOPT A -SEMINARIAN A couple of weeks ago I put an Adopt-A-Seminarian form in the Sunday School classrooms. This program is something that individuals or classes can do as a part of their outreach. So we can have many, few or just one Seminarian that Trinity adopts. You might ask why we would want to participate in this type of program. Many of the younger people leave Arkansas to attend Seminary and lose some of their connections to Arkansas as a result. The effect of this is that when other conferences show up at the seminary they are recruiting our young clergy away from Arkansas. The goal of the program is to help the Seminarian feel connected to various churches in the conference through the notes, letters and encouragement that they receive from multiple sources in Arkansas. If you are interested in participating in the program, give me a call. Blessings, Candace!
8 Where Do Your Tithes Go? Volunteers in Mission Volunteers in Mission is the response of the United Methodist Church in Arkansas to the expressed need of the united Methodist people to be in mission in a hands on mode. Projects include construction and repair of houses, schools, hospitals, churches, educational and medical missions, disaster relief and responses to diverse needs. In foreign lands, Volunteers may serve by leading the local children in learning Christian songs and Bible verses. Across the nation, and abroad, Volunteers in Mission is exploding with increasing interest and participation. The program enables everyone to contribute not only our money and prayers but also our hands into lifting up Jesus Christ for the world to see. Contacting your Church Staff Dr. Robin Moore Rev.
