1 O ctober 13, 2009 Dear Friends, In Judaism, the Talmud explains how the site for King Solomon s Temple was chosen. A father left a field to his two sons, and they worked it side by side. They plowed, planted, cultivated and harvested together, and when the harvest was finished they divided everything equally. One took his share of the harvest to his house at one end of the field, and the other took his to his house at the other end. That night the brother at one end asked himself the question, Was that a fair division of the harvest? He came to the conclusion that it wasn t. He said to himself, I don t have anyone who s dependent on me. My brother has a wife and two sons to care for. It was selfish of me to take half, when his needs are greater than mine. So he went into his storehouse, picked up all he could carry and started across the field toward his brother s home. That same night, the other brother asked himself the same question, and he too decided the division of the harvest had not been fair. To understand his reasoning, you d need to understand the Jewish idea that responsibility for the care of older parents fell to their children. Therefore, one with children, particularly male children, was considered blessed, because he was assured the security in his old age. The second brother reasoned, I have these two strong sons who will look after me when I m old. My brother doesn t have anyone to look after him. It was selfish of me to take half of the harvest, when someday he s going to need the income it will bring. So he went to his storehouse, picked up all he could carry, and started across the field. They met in the middle. They each knew what the other had been thinking, and touched by it, they embraced, tears streaming down their cheeks. The Talmud says that on that spot, consecrated with the tears of true brotherhood, they erected the Holy Temple of Solomon. Neither was asking the question, Did I get my share? Did I get all that was coming to me? They were asking instead, Did my brother get all he needed; all he was entitled to receive? Unity; of one heart; where our concern for each other is more important than our concern for ourselves. That s what it means to be part of a family of faith; a WE. When we are first and foremost concerned for each other and when that concern is what guides us through life, then while I serve to fill your needs, you are serving to fill mine. As a result, no one is left needing. May it be so. 5 From him, through you The Light of Christ Shines in the World YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE! by your Service Prior to his ascension, the Risen Christ commissioned his followers to: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (MT 28:19). As Christian disciples today, we take his command seriously. Our purpose as the Body is to make disciples, learners, followers of Jesus Christ. But our role is not simply to call people to God through Christ. We are to teach and nurture them in the faith, and train, deploy and support them in the ministry to which God has called them. Nothing is more humbling or more fulfilling than knowing God is using you to make miracles happen in the world. By your willingness to serve in His name, your example strengthens our effort to fulfill the mission for which we exist. SERVE through one of many Christian Network Ministry Teams. Each year when the Ministry Campaign culminates, fill out a ministry card indicating those areas where you are willing to serve. If the Spirit moves you to serve between Ministry Campaigns, or if there is a ministry not yet in existence and you feel called to begin it, let us know and we will do our best to make it happen! Written information about Christian Network is available at the Welcome Center and in the Church Office. SERVE through administrative leadership in the church. When the Lay Leadership Committee comes calling, answer with a resounding YES! SERVE through our very busy, very active Miracle Team. Mission Trips, the Brady Project, Our House, Camp Aldersgate. There are always short-term and long-term projects through which you can move your hands and fill your heart. by your Witness. Every week in worship you hear as the Benediction is offered: You are following the Light of Christ out into the world because this (building) is not the church, you are the church. And you are going out to be the church. Let his light shine in you; let it shine through you so the world will know who Jesus is. The church is not a building, it is a people, a family: the children of God, brothers and sisters of the Living Christ. Because we are his disciples, it is our privilege to carry his mission throughout the world; to be his hands and feet, his heart and his voice. With that privilege comes great responsibility: SHINE through word and deed so others will know that the Jesus you claim as Lord of your life is humble, kind, compassionate, truthful and generous. SHINE so that your friends, your families, your coworkers, your neighbors will know through you that Christ is alive and well, working vigorously through Trinity United Methodist Church to bring God s grace and love to bear upon a hurting world. SHINE so that others will see the passion, the peace and the wonder that is yours as a disciple. SHINE as you bring others into the Gates of Thanksgiving: to worship, learn, grow and serve beside us. God thanks you and Trinity thanks you!
6 What does it mean to be a Christian Witness? After walking through a cemetery, a man said, Have you noticed how much meaning a dash can have? Born 1921 Died What a way to summarize a life with a dash! That will eventually describe the years of every person s life a dash. We can t stop our movement toward the final destination, but we can choose what we do with our dash. We can spend it on significant matters or on meaningless trivia. We can leave a mark of faith, or we can disappear into the mist unnoticed. It really is up to us. A trial was beginning a number of years ago at the courthouse in a small county-seat town in northeast Arkansas. When officials got ready to swear in the first witness, they couldn t find the old Bible they had used for years and years. A quick search of the courthouse revealed nothing. Finally, the judge called the bailiff forward and whispered in his ear, Go down to the county clerk s office and get Ed. Ed had been a member of the local Methodist church longer than anyone could remember. Everyone knew him to be as a shining example of what Christianity is all about. After a few minutes, the bailiff approached the bench, pulling Ed along behind. The judge said, Ed, you have communicated by word and deed more biblical principles to more people than most of the Bibles in this town. You ll make a good substitute for the one we can t find. And so the first witness placed his hand on Ed s bald head, swore the oath, and the trial began. Ed was never famous. He didn t invent anything or find a cure for disease. He led a simple, quiet life; one that obviously had a profound impact on others. What kind of mark will your dash leave?
7 UNDY 500 at TRINITY Most of you have heard of the INDY 500, the annual car race held in Indianapolis, so named because of the location and the number of miles. Over the next few weeks, the Trinity Miracle Team is sponsoring the UNDY 500, a race to secure 500 new pairs of white socks, underwear (briefs or panties) for the Arkansas Homeless Outreach Event. The Arkansas Homeless Outreach Event is an annual event aimed to help meet some of the needs of homeless people in our community. This year the event will be held on October 24 in downtown NLR in conjunction with CityFest. The event typically draws 1,500 homeless people. Trinity has offered to help by supplying new white socks and underwear. Let s see if we can meet the goal of 500 items to donate to this worthy cause. You will find orange buckets in your Sunday school rooms and other locations around the church where you can drop off new packages of white socks, men s briefs, women s panties and even children s underwear. Race ends on Sunday, October 18, UNDY SUNDAY. We will tally up the results to find out if we met our goal and deliver these needed items to the Homeless Coalition. Bring your folding lawn chairs and plan to spend a great October football weather afternoon with your Trinity family calling the Hogs. It's another great Trinity family event, so Wooooooo Pig Soooie! Coach Jay and Coach Paul Have a Green Halloween! Is Halloween not the first holiday that comes to mind when you think green? Normally this is the holiday of candy, costumes and spooky decorations. This year we challenge you to think a little more green than orange and black. When planning your Halloween party send out evites instead of paper invitations. This will not only save paper, but also money in postage! Buy your pumpkins and gourds from a local farmer s market or farmer. This will help cut down on the fossil fuels used to transport your decorations to the market. Use every part of your pumpkin bake your seeds and eat them or lay them out for the birds( they can be given to the birds in a wet or dry state). After you are finished with your pumpkin compost the remains or simply bury it (make sure all seeds are removed or you will have quite a pumpkin patch!) Use reusable or compostable linens, plates and cups at your Halloween party. The more things that you can recycle, the less frightening the landfills will be. Finally have fun and remember that Fall is one of the best times to go out and enjoy the weather and nature at its finest. Gather leaves and various items from nature and make a centerpiece for your table. After you are done with it, return it to nature and no one loses.
10 Where do your tithes go? Christian Education and Teaching A young pastor was counseled, what you have heard from me through many faithful witnesses entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others as well (2 Tim.2:2). Faithful people who teach others are essential to the life of our congregation. A portion of our offerings provide necessary training for those leaders and teachers who teach the faith in our congregation. Contacting your Church Staff Dr. Robin Moore Rev.
