1 S e p t e m b e r 2 6, Friends, When I first met my husband, I was about to turn forty. I confessed to him that I thought I might like to do something rather daring, like get a tattoo. In response, as one of my birthday presents, he gave me a temporary tattoo that read, Vic Snyder for Congress! In July, I turned fifty, and I thought about getting a tattoo again. One of the reasons I hesitate is because I m afraid I could never decide on a design that I d like for the rest of my life. I also wonder if I d have regrets about putting the names of my sons, for example, somewhere. They d love it right now, but later, I m sure, they d think it was gross. Plus, I always think about the reality that, at some point, when aging skin sags, and it comes to us all, then what in the world is that tattoo going to look like and am I really going to want to show it off? Still, it s kind of fun to think about what you d actually put on your own tattoo or series of tattoos since more and more younger folks like to put ink or tats or art, as tattoos are commonly referred to, on any spare skin they can find. Truly, some of the custom designs tattooists produce are amazing. Obviously, tattoos are no longer just for Popeye and sailors. This past week, I was getting a pedicure and noticed that one of the pedicurists had an amazing tattoo of Jesus on her back! I asked if she d mind if I took a picture, and she readily agreed. I had to admire her adventurous spirit in having such a major piece of religious art placed across her back. When we are baptized into Christ s body, we are given a completely new identity. We are given what I like to think is a watermark, similar to the ones that are embedded in paper where one has to hold the paper up to the light in order to see it fully. The only way anyone can see we are Christians is to observe how we behave. Do we love one another? Are we forgiving others? Are we growing in Christ through study of scripture, the means of grace, like Holy Communion, prayer, service and sharing the love of Christ in the world? As you read this newsletter, over thirty Christians from Trinity, including our church staff, are traveling to Church of the Resurrection for their annual Leadership Institute. We will be there from Tues. Sept. 27- Fri. Sept. 30 to gain radically new ways of being faithful disciples and good stewards of Jesus church. Please pray for your team. We will keep you updated on our Facebook page and will share what we learn when we return. I will continue my sermons series, The Christian Bucket List: What Will You Do with The Rest of Your Life? In the meantime, let s all covenant to grow deeper in Christ and to live like we had a visible picture of Jesus on us that all could see. It s that wonderful time of year, near St. Francis of Assisi s feast day, October 4, when we recall how this Christian friar, loved animals. Please bring your animal friends to be blessed to the Trinity courtyard on Sunday, October 2 at 2 p.m. If you have a deceased pet or a pet that is too difficult to handle, you may bring a photo to place on the altar. Pictures will also be taken. Save the date! November 12 and 13 th Central Arkansas Rescue Effort (CARE) will offer Christmas photos with Santa for people and their animal friends at Trinity, in Martin Hall! Times will be announced soon.
