BRIDGING FAITH & LEARNING SERVICE OF WORSHIP All Saints' Sunday Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Pentecost Sunday, November 4, 2018, 11:00 a.m. Celebration, John August Swanson, 1997 This morning we celebrate All Saints' Sunday as we remember our fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ across the world and throughout the ages. In this morning's Scripture readings, the apostle John records the spectacular vision revealed to him of Jesus enthroned in glory. Jesus reveals the consummation of all the promises he has fulfilled God will dwell among his redeemed people, for whom death and crying and pain will be no more. In his Gospel, John records Jesus' raising of Lazarus from death to life, a foretaste of glory for those who have resurrection hope through faith in Christ. Jesus invites those who are thirsty to come to him and receive the inheritance of the children of God. Let us ask for that thirst today.

Gathering Carillon Opening Voluntary In Memory H.H.L. Dan Locklair (b. 1949) Greeting and Call to Worship *Processional Hymn 711 For All the Saints SINE NOMINE *Prayers of Confession and Words of Assurance In unison: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen. The minister speaks words of assurance. *Peace All exchange signs and words of God's peace. Proclamation Prayer for Illumination In unison: Lord Jesus, you are making all things new: send your Holy Spirit to make us new through the illumination of your holy word; in your holy name we pray, Amen. New Testament Lesson Read in Korean Revelation 21:1 6 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away. And the one who was seated on the throne said, See, I am making all things new. Also he said, Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true. Then he said * All who are able may stand

to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. Lector: People: This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. *Gradual Hymn 702 (Stanzas 1 2) Face the Gospel Procession Sing with All the Saints in Glory Gospel Lesson NT page 99 in the pew Bibles John 11:32 44 Lector: People: This is the word of the Lord. And also with you. Let us pray. Prayers of the People The congregation responds to each petition: People: Hear our prayer. Offertory Anthem Give Us the Wings of Faith Give us the wings of faith to rise Within the veil, and see The Saints above, how great their joys, How bright their glories be. We ask them, whence their victory came; They with one united breath, Ascribe the conquest to the Lamb, Their triumph to his death. They marked the footsteps that he trod, His zeal inspired their breast; HYMN TO JOY HYMN TO JOY Ernest Bullock ( )

And following their incarnate God, They reached the promised rest. Isaac Watts *Doxology LASST UNS ERFREUEN Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Alleluia, Alleluia! Thanksgiving and Holy Communion *All Saints' Celebration of Communion The celebrant and congregation will sing the responses to SINE NOMINE, the tune for For All the Saints located on page 711 in the hymnal. Lift up your hearts and raise them to the Lord, and render thanks to God, the Lord of all. With saints and angel hosts we join in song: You gave yourself, O God, to dwell on earth as Word made flesh and prophecy fulfilled; the saints gave their lives as witness to your grace. Lord Jesus Christ, the night he was betrayed, with bread and cup, to his disciples said, This is my blood and body given for you. Accept our sacrifice of thanks and praise, as we recall Christ s passion and his death, who rose victorious and will come again. May bread and wine become Christ s flesh and blood; may we unite with him and all the world, and bring us to feast with all the saints in heaven. *The Lord's Prayer All are encouraged to pray the Lord's Prayer in the language of their choosing. The English version is number 895 in the hymnal. Sharing of the Bread and Wine All who love Christ, earnestly repent of their sins, and seek to be at peace with God and neighbor are invited to receive

Communion. Wine is used for Communion. If you would prefer to receive grape juice, it is available upon request at the Communion station near the main entrance of the Chapel, on the pulpit side. If you have a gluten allergy, there is a server near the Memorial Chapel who will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine. If you will not receive Communion, you are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. Music During Distribution Communion Anthem Justorum animae William Byrd ( ) Justorum animae in manu Dei sunt, et non tanget illos tormentum mortis. Visi sunt oculis insipientium mori: illi autem sunt in pace. The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and there no torment shall touch them. In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die: but they are in peace. Sending Forth Offertory for the Feast of All Saints. LEARNING THE LITURGY: SERMON By the mysterious work of the Holy Spirit, the sermon is the Word of God to the community of faith. Each preacher strives to connect the stories and truths of the Bible to our daily lives, offering us the good news of Jesus Christ. Each worshiper is called to listen to the message with openness and faith. Ultimately, however, the sermon is more than preacher and listener, as the Holy Spirit uses the sermon to speak to our hearts and minds. If you discuss the sermon with others, don t be surprised if individuals find meaning in different parts of the sermon. That is the Spirit at work.
