Our Church Parish will be hosting a month long baby shower to help those women in a crisis pregnancy. Throughout the month of October, there will be playpens available in the front and back of the church to drop off donations such as diapers, wipes, baby bottles, diaper cream, car seats, etc. The collected items will then be brought to The Women s Center to help those in need choose life for their unborn child. Named the Pilgrimage of Mercy, it is the first time that her body travels to the USA. The body of Saint Maria Goretti will be in Baton Rouge Saturday 10/31 and Sunday 11/1 at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 445 Marquette Ave., Baton Rouge, Louisiana St. Maria Goretti is a virgin martyr and miracle worker in death. She was stabbed to death while resisting the advances of the son of her father s business partner. He had attempted to seduce Maria repeatedly and she had resisted his advances. When she refused him, he stabbed her repeatedly. She was credited with some forty miracles after her death. She was canonized in 1950 as a model of purity. She is the patron: Against impoverishment; against poverty; children; children of Mary; girls; loss of parents; martyrs; rape victims; young people in general. October Lecture: How the Rosary Saved the West On Oct. 7, 1571, the overwhelmed forces of the Christian West fought an epic naval battle against the Muslim Ottoman Empire. Despite its apparent inferiority, the Christian forces defeated the Ottomans at the Battle of Lepanto. The inferiority was only apparent. In fact, the Christian forces had the intercession of the Blessed Virgin on their side, through the power of the rosary. This battle is the subject of the next Back-to-Basics lecture, on Monday, Oct. 12, at 5:30 pm, at the Family Life Center. Speaker will be Nicholas Jagneaux. Abortion and Putting Our Faith into Action In a culture and world that is hungry for the Truth, we are often challenged to put our faith into action. For example, many of our politicians profess their Catholic faith, but try to divorce the faith which they proclaim from their policies, particularly as this relates to LIFE issues. However, as Christ's followers and as Catholics, we are called to integrate our faith into all aspects of our lives. In fact, we are called to make our faith evident in all our actions and decisions. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us not to hide our light under a bushel basket, but let our light shine before others (Mt 5:15-16). Defense of the unborn---the most vulnerable and defenseless human beings in our society, is undoubtedly the most important aspect of integrating our faith and actions.
