OLQAS Food Pantry: Due to abuse by those individuals seeking assistance the Parish Council and Father Guidry have devised another method of attempting to help the needy with food. A voucher for a local store will be used with specific items allowed for purchase with a set amount of money allowed to be charged to the Church. Therefore, rather than donating items to the pantry, you are asked to put the money you would spend on those items in the Poor Box. The Poor Box will be the only source of funding for any assistance to the needy by pastoral decision.

4 Message from our Shepherd Christmas According to Christ Did you ever wonder what Jesus would have to say about our celebration of His birth and the modern controversies surrounding it? He would probably begin by letting us know He is aware that many of us Christians are upset that His name, indeed His very presence, is far removed from the season. He would remind us that we should rejoice in His coming among us and sing His praises all year long, not only at this time of the year. He would want us to live what He taught which is to love Him above all things and to love one another as He has loved us. It means mutual respect, even toward those we do not agree with, and forgiveness toward those who offend us. Prayer and mercy do far more good than selfrighteousness and anger. If it bothers us that the town in which we live does not allow a Nativity scene on public property then we should push the Santas and snowmen aside and prominently put in a Nativity scene on our own. There should be no need to expect others to do this for us. If we are concerned that people call the festive trees "holiday trees" instead of Christmas trees, we should remember that every tree is made by God and belongs to Him. We should remember Him every time we see a tree or any of His gifts of nature and thank Him for the beauty of creation. We should also ask Him to help us be good stewards of the earth's resources and take care of all the good things His hands have made. We may be annoyed by what stores call or do not call the holiday, but that gives us no right to be rude to those who work there. We must give everyone, to other shoppers, too, a warm smile and a kind word. Even if workers are forbidden to wish shoppers a Merry Christmas, that does not stop us Christians from wishing it to others. We should spread good cheer and wish others a Merry Christmas whether they respond in kind or not. Consider, too, that many people are tempted to suicide during this season because of feelings of loneliness and hopelessness; giving everyone we meet a kind word or gesture could make a great difference for them. We should also be patient with one another in the stores, the shopping malls, and on the highways. We would do well, too, to resist shopping on Sundays and let store owners know they should give store employees time off to worship God Fr. Mitchell Guidry and be with their families instead of writing protest letters this time of year. objecting to the way Christmas is being altered, write kind letters of hope, encouragement, and gratitude to soldiers far away from home; they feel a deep sense of separation this time of year. Visit people in a nursing home; you don't have to know them personally, just let them know someone cares for them. They need that. Instead of criticizing the government, organizations or individuals you disagree with, pray for them; go a step further and write letting them know you are praying for them. Instead of giving in to greed and giving your children lots of expensive gifts you cannot afford and they do not need anyway, spend some quality time with them. Tell them the story of Christ's birth and why He came to live with us. Hold them tight and remind them of His love for them. Think of the people in your past who have hurt you in any way and forgive them. Support local crisis hot-lines, help centers, food pantries and clothing closets; help counsel, feed, clothe or house a person in need. There are individuals and families who will not have a "Merry Christmas" because they lack the basic necessities of life, not to mention gifts to give or receive; if you do not know who these persons are, there are churches and organizations who do. Help them to help others. Finally, Christ would probably tell us that if we need to make a statement about our belief in and loyalty to Him, then we need to behave like Christians; not in drunkenness and gluttony, perversion and lust or selfishness and greed, but in purity, chastity, self-control, and generosity. People should know quite evidently by our behavior whether we are believers or not. We are to love Him and do whatever He tells us, He'll take care of the rest. After all, Christ is God and He is Emmanuel - the God Who is always with us! Joyeux Noël! Que Dieu vous bénisse durant cette Sainte saison et toujours. Père Mitchell Guidry

5 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In ancient pagan Rome, these days in mid-december were a time for general slacking off at work and far too much rejoicing. The period of leisure after the harvest and a whole cluster of pagan festivals were a force for the church to reckon with. The Saturnalia, breaking out on December 17, was a time of high living and loose morals. Christians were advised by their bishops to drop out of the mayhem and do some serious fasting. A famous church council at Saragossa in Spain made a season of fasting mandatory from December 17 to December 23, exactly coinciding with the Saturnalia. The bishops at that time were perhaps less concerned with preparing for Christmas than with resisting the kind of loose living going on. Modern times have restored a bit of the Saturnalia spirit to our culture, so that a general period of partying with a vague connection to religion is now upon us. How does a Christian keep balance? The practice of charity by remembering the poor in our gift giving, of hospitality in finding a place at our holiday tables for the poor and lonely, and of daily prayer in the home and at church are great helps. Although Advent is not a penitential season like Lent, it is a time for making room in our lives for what matters most. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Reflectinging on God s Word My father used to refer to the town of my and his birth as a nickel-and-dime town. As a child, I was never exactly sure what he meant, but it didn t sound like a compliment. I think it was similar to Micah s words about Bethlehem as too small to be among the clans of Judah (5:1). Another description would be backwater. Hardly a place deserving of great expectations. Yet backwater Bethlehem, city of David the shepherd boy, was to be the birthplace of the Messiah not Jerusalem, center of government and religion, city of David the warrior king. God s strange choices extend beyond geographical sites to the people on whom God sets eyes. A young betrothed girl up in the north, a barren woman down in the south these were chosen to play pivotal roles in the story of salvation. The once-barren Elizabeth, soon to bring forth the greatest of all prophets, now proclaims God s most marvelous work and the little one through whom God is working: Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb (Luke 1:42).Elizabeth cues us to join in the response of the baby in her womb: to allow our hearts and spirits to leap for joy. Again and again God works through those who are open to the Spirit. Blessed are they who place their trust in the Lord, who continues to come to give us new life. James A. Wallace, C.SS.R.Copyright 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Christmas time begins on December 24 with the first Vespers of the feast and ends on the feast of the Baptism of Christ. White vestments reappear in our churches as a sign of joy. The Christmas feast is a festival full of joy. The Eternal Word has become Man and dwells among us. The longings of the patriarchs and prophets are fulfilled. With the shepherds we hurry to the manger and adore the Incarnate Son of God, who for us and for our salvation descended upon earth. The purpose of the Christmas feast is beautifully expressed in the Preface of the Nativity: "For by the mystery of the Word made flesh the light of Thy glory hath shone anew upon the eyes of our mind; so that while we acknowledge Him a God seen by men, we may be drawn by Him to the love of things unseen." During the Christmas season there is an extensive exchange of greetings and good wishes among friends. These greetings are a reminder of those "good tidings of great joy that shall be to all the people, for this day is born to you a Savior Who is Christ the Lord" (Lk. 2:11). They are a reminder, too, that all blessings and graces come to us from Christ: "Hath He not also with Him given us all things?" (Rom. 8:32). During the Christmas season there is also an exchange of gifts. This custom should recall to us that on this day God Himself gave to us the greatest of all gifts, His beloved Son: "God so loved the world as to give His only begotten Son" (John 3: 16). The Christmas tree, of which the first-known mention was made in 1605 at Strasbourg, was introduced into France and England in It symbolizes the great family tree of Christ which through David and Jesse has its roots in Abraham, the father of the chosen race. It is often laden with gifts to remind us that Christmas brought us the priceless gifts of grace and of eternal life. It is frequently adorned with lights that recall to us that Christ is the Light of the world enlightening those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death..

6 A Retreat Into Prayer Examining the Prayer of Nothingness with Mother Teresa and Her Sisters is a book by Father Joseph Brennan, a local retired priest, author, and former pastor at OLQAS Church. He has condensed notes from a three day retreat he gave to Blessed Mother Teresa and her sisters in Calcutta in September The book is now available at Crossroads Catholic Bookstore in Lafayette. Items for publication for the bulletin must be submitted two weeks in advance. The publication schedule requires the bulletin to be sent into the company well in advance of the week it is issued. This includes Mass intentions. If they are not in the Mass book in advance they cannot be published. Please keep this in mind as you consider scheduling your Mass intentions. Sacristans and Lectors needed at Tuesday Mass at 5:30PM. Call the FLC if interested. Benefits are out of this world! Living God s Word: After hearing Elizabeth s final words, Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled (Luke 1:45), we can pray the words of the refrain of today s responsorial psalm: Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved (Psalm 80:4).Copyright 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Are You Registered? You must be a registered member of one of the Catholic Churches in town. You may not be in the census of both Sacred Heart & OLQAS. In order to be married in the Church, have your child baptized you must be registered at that Church. If you are currently receiving Church envelopes then you are registered in the OLQAS census. Being registered with one Church does not in any way bar you from attending either or both Churches for regular Mass. Also, young adults, when you marry or establish your own household, it is your responsibility to register as a new household in the Church census. Count! Choirs / Singing/ Sounds of Joy: Needed: individuals who would like to sing and /or play an instrument and give thanks to the Lord through the musical liturgy. No particular talent required, simply the desire to sing with others. Practice is once a week and the group is scheduled weekly at a regular time on Sunday. Please consider giving back to the Lord in this way. Just show up at Mass and walk over to the Choir area! They will be glad to have you. For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward Heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy. St. Therese of Lisieux Unplanned pregnancy?
