3 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time 2013 CELEBRATE LIFE BANQUET: Feb. 16th, :30PM at Hotel Acadiana (Pinhook St., Lafayette) with keynote speaker Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. This is sponsored by the Desormeaux Foundation. The evening includes dinner and a silent auction. This is a fundraiser for St. Marguerite d Youville Home, a home for homeless pregnant women, and the other pro-life ministries of the Desormeaux Foundation. All of the proceeds remain local and 100% are used for the mission of pro-life and to educate unwed mothers in Acadiana. Tickets are $75.00 each with sponsorships available. Mass will be celebrated at 12:10 PM as usual with distribution of ashes following and at 6:00 PM. It is a day of Fast and Abstinence. Even the darkest moments of the liturgy are filled with joy. And Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lent fast, is a day of happiness, a Christian feast. It cannot be otherwise, as it forms part of the great Easter cycle (Thomas Merton). Blessed ashes are then "imposed" on the faithful as a sign of conversion, penance, fasting and human mortality The act of putting on ashes symbolizes fragility and mortality, and the need to be redeemed by the mercy of God. Far from being a merely external act, the Church has retained the use of ashes to symbolize that attitude of internal penance to which all the baptized are called during Lent. Rules of Fast and Abstinence for Ash Wednesday and Lent: For Catholics aged 18 to 60, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are designated days of fasting, which means eating only one full meal and 2 lighter meals. On the same days and on all Fridays of Lent, Catholics 14 years and over are also obliged to abstain from meat. Fasting is required during the Lenten season to recall Jesus fast for forty days in the wilderness. Robert Herrick Prayer Source: Holy Lent by Eileen O'Callaghan, The Liturgical Press, Collegeville, Min- Catholic Activity: Lenten Sacrifice Beans A wonderful way to help younger children remind them to do penance during Lent, lima beans in a jar record each Lenten sacrifice. DIRECTIONS: It is hard to keep track of this treasure that is laid in Heaven if you are quite small and six weeks drag out like six years. We have made this part of the effort visible for the children so that they might see that they were accomplishing something. On or about Ash Wednesday, we dye lima beans purple to be used as counters in a jar. Beans, because they are seeds which, if put in the ground, appear to die only to spring forth with new life. This is what Our Lord said we must do if we would have life in Him. He that seems to lose his life shall gain it. The beans remind us that daily death to self in one self-denial after another is the dying which will find for us new life in Him.

Collect: Grant us, O merciful God, protect tion in our weakness, that we, who keep the Memorial of the Immaculate Mother of God, may with the help of her interces sion, rise up from our iniquities. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. UCCB website Four years after the promulgation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception (1854), the Blessed Virgin appeared a number of times to a very poor and holy girl named Bernadette. The actual spot was in a grotto on the bank of the Gave River near Lourdes. The Immaculate Conception had a youthful appearance and was clothed in a pure white gown and mantle, with an azure blue girdle. A golden rose adorned each of her bare feet. On her first apparition, February 11, 1858, the Blessed Virgin bade the girl make the sign of the Cross piously and say the rosary with her. Bernadette saw her take the rosary that was hanging from her arms into her hands. This was repeated in subsequent apparitions. With childlike simplicity Bernadette once sprinkled holy water on the vision, fearing that it was a deception of the evil spirit; but the Blessed Virgin smiled pleasantly, and her face became even more lovely. The third time Mary appeared she invited the girl to come to the grotto daily for two weeks. Now she frequently spoke to Bernadette. On one occasion she ordered her to tell the ecclesiastical authorities to build a church on the spot and to organize processions. Bernadette also was told to drink and wash at the spring still hidden under the sand. Finally on the feast of the Annunciation, the beautiful Lady announced her name, "I am the Immaculate Conception." The report of cures occurring at the grotto spread quickly and the more it spread, the greater the number of Christians who visited the hallowed place. The publicity given these miraculous events on the one hand and the seeming sincerity and innocence of the girl on the other made it necessary for the bishop of Tarbes to institute a judicial inquiry. Four years later he declared the apparitions to be supernatural and permitted the public veneration of the Immaculate Conception in the grotto. Soon a chapel was erected, and since that time countless pilgrims come every year to Lourdes to fulfill promises or to beg graces. Excerpted from The Church's Year of Grace, Pius Parsch. Lourdes is one of the most important places of grace known to the Church. It is like a vast basin of purity where countless souls have removed the clothes of sin and put on the snow white garments of spiritual rebirth!. GOD S SUMMONS Confronted with God s power and majesty, the first response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his sinfulness. Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man. Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? Isaiah answered, Here I am, send me. We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won t lead to anything. What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees? Lucas Tomson will lead the parish on a journey back to the 4th century. Together, we will meet three saints from the patristic era of the Church. While quite different from each other, they encountered Christ and received from Him the gift of faith. With this virtue, they spent the rest of their lives seeking Him in communion with the Church. Although they lived long ago, they have much to teach us today, for we share one faith.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: Many Catholics who are not active in the Church will still seek out ashes this Wednesday. Likewise, many Jews who are not otherwise observant will follow the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, with great exactness, fasting and refraining from work and entertainment. People customarily dress in white as a symbol of purity and a reminder of God s promise that our sins will be made white as snow. While the overture to Ash Wednesday for Christians may be a festive Mardi Gras celebration, for Jews it is the New Year feast of Rosh Hashanah. Ten days before the Day of Atonement to God, people are expected to repair breaks in human life. These are days for offering forgiveness and seeking to repair harmed relationships with family, friends, or coworkers. Everyone is expected to seek out someone and clear the air by asking for understanding for any mean words or thoughtless deeds in the past year. Perhaps the ashes you receive will be invested with deeper meaning if you follow a similar plan. This year, Rosh Hashanah will be September 5, and Yom Kippur September 14.
