TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Hollywood has given us an image of Moses slipping off his shoes before a burning bush. God has just called Moses by name, and so that Moses doesn t miss the meaning of this breakthrough in human history, God requires that all barriers to the experience be eliminated. If you ve ever tried to maneuver barefoot across hot sand, or pick your way along a rocky beach, you know how sensitive feet can be. Within the Church, there are religious orders with a custom of going barefoot, not merely to show poverty, but to be an outward sign of a desire for connection with creation, a desire to go through life alert to what God is doing. In early days, when reconciliation was a once in a lifetime possibility, penitents often went barefoot for a long period of time as a sign of their conversion. Even today, people follow an ancient practice of slipping off their shoes to walk in the procession to the cross on Good Friday. It is striking that the first use of our newly scrubbed feet from Holy Thursday night is to walk resolutely in the footsteps of Christ to the cross.james Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Ministers serving assigned Mass: EMs, lectors and altar servers are asked to please arrive at Church and sign in within the sacristy a minimum of 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the celebration of the Mass. This allows Father Guidry to be sure all necessary people assisting at Mass are present. With the advent of Spring, ball and other seasonal activities, distractions abound to keep us from satisfying our responsibilities to our Church but more importantly to Our Lord. The donation to the Lord of our time and talent is important throughout the year. Please be cooperative with one another regarding substituting. Some parents are refusing to allow their child/ server to sub for others. This is not an appropriate model for your children much less Christian witness to the necessity of charity toward one another. God bless you in your role at the Mass. You are allowing graces to pour over you.

4 Third Sunday in Lent A Transfiguring Moment by Jeff Cravins "And as he was praying, the appearance of his countenance was altered, and his [clothing] became dazzling white. And behold, two men talked with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his [exodus], which he was to accomplish at Jerusalem." Luke 9:29-31 What did you give up for Lent this year? Chocolate? Coffee? Dessert? When I was younger, I usually chose something intrinsically unappealing, like lutefisk (a Scandinavian specialty of codfish soaked in lye). But as the days of Lent rolled on, my admiration grew for those around me who had made genuine sacrifices. It was common to hear the faithful speak longingly of a hot fudge sundae or French silk pie toward the end of those forty days. Me? I didn't really look forward to anything at the conclusion of Lent, nor had I anticipated the grand focus of Lent: the resurrection. So while my friends and family eagerly anticipated the conclusion of Lent, life went on as normal for me. When Jesus led Peter, James, and John up that high mountain (see also Mark 9:2-10), their lives were anything but normal. Moses and Elijah appeared and began to speak to Jesus, as he was transfigured before them, his Garments a glistening, intense white. We call this event the Transfiguration. As we read the text, we should ask ourselves, "Why are we hearing about Moses and Elijah appearing to Jesus in the readings during Lent?" One important reason is that these men all experienced a forty-day period of preparation. (Matthew 4:1-11). Moses stayed on the mountain of God forty days (Exodus 24:18). Elijah traveled forty days before he had a vision (1 Kings 19:8). And Jesus spent forty days in the wilderness, praying and fasting, before his public ministry (Matthew 4:1-11). "Forty days" in the Scriptures and in the life of the Church traditionally signifies a time of preparation, discipline, devotion, and testing. In the Transfiguration, God gave the three disciples a sneak peek at the glory of the revelation of Christ that was first witnessed by Moses on the Mount. They would not immediately understand the purpose of the suffering Christ was about to endure. But having witnessed that moment of resurrected glory, they would one day come to understand that God's redemption would be accomplished, not by a conquering Messiah, but through one who would suffer. This Transfiguration anticipates not only Christ's glorification, but our own as well. Paul said, "It is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him" (Romans 8:16-17). Action Step The Catechism teaches, "By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert" (CCC 540). How will you unite yourself this Lent with Christ in the "desert" in a particular area of your life, so that you too can experience the glory of Easter? 5 Spiritual Growth Opportunities Sacred Heart Lenten Mission 2013: March 4,5,6, 2013 at Sacred Heart Church Fourth Century Faith for the Twenty First: Sts. Ambrose, Monica and Augustine In this Year of Faith, Fr. Lucas Tomson will lead the parish on a journey back to the 4th century. Together, we will meet three saints from the patristic era of the Church. While quite different from each other, they encountered Christ and received from Him the gift of faith. With this virtue, they spent the rest of their lives seeking Him in communion with the Church. Although they lived long ago, they have much to teach us today, for we share one faith. Change in Holy Hour Schedule: There will be no more Holy Hours on 1st Fridays rather Holy Hour will be held on the Thursday before each First Friday from 6-7PM following Mass with the exception of July 5th when it will be held from before noon Mass. Dates of next HOLY HOURS are: Feb. 28; Apr. 4th; May 2nd; June 6th; July 5th; Aug.1st; Sept. 5th; Oct.3rd; Oct. 31st & Dec. 5th. Annual Catholic Daughters French Retreat is scheduled for March 19th from 8AM - noon. OLQAS Mission is scheduled for March 12, 13, and 14th beginning at 6:00PM each evening. Deacon David Guillory will speak on Living the Beatitudes. Mass will be celebrated each night. Confessions will be heard a half hour prior to the Mission.
