MINI-FESTIVAL NEWS BY KELLY HALL, CHAIRPERSON Did you ever have a week that everything that could go wrong, does go wrong, and then the following week everything just falls into place? Well, I m convinced that happens to remind us to be thankful for all things, little and small, in our life. Let me tell you, I am thankful this week. We had our meeting last Monday and we are moving along with our new plan. We have chairpersons for the following events: Pasta Feast - Anna Marie Stropkaj, Octoberfest - Cathy Butchko, Parish Festival Raffle - Linda Kyle and Judy Harbaugh, Night at the Races - Patty Paul, Chinese Auction - Renee Namisnak, Beverages - Ron and Tee Amity, Fried Cakes - JR Ramsey, Paczki (donut filled with homemade blueberry filling, lekvar or plain) - Rose Dombrowski and her sisters. Chairperson, I will be contacting you in the next couple of weeks. We still need a lot of help. For the Pasta Feast and Octoberfest, we are asking parishioners to donate baked goods or items/baskets. As I stated in the past, our parish is very generous and contributes from their hearts, any donation of materials, time or prayers are greatly appreciated. We also will need some plastic Giant Eagle, Shop n Save or Foodland bags for take outs. If you have any extra, we can certainly use them. SAVE THIS DATE The Pasta Feast is scheduled for Sunday, September 12, 2010 from Noon to 6 PM. Dinner will consist of spaghetti or homemade gnocchi, meatballs, salad, roll & butter with coffee, lemonade or ice tea to drink. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for kids 10 and under. Tickets will go on sale soon. Yes, there is a Steeler away game scheduled. (We are checking to see if we can get the channel on the television in the social hall. I will report back on what we find out.) This is a personal invitation to join us this Monday, August 9, at 6:30 PM in the Social Hall to make Gnocchi for the dinner. Teen and adult help is needed moving furniture and other items this Monday, August 9 at 1:30 PM (meet at the current Youth Center in the basement of MOS Social Hall). If you can help, just show up! WAVE POOL All high school age teens (including students entering 9th grade) are invited to join youth from St. Philip and St. Malachy parishes at the wave pool on Friday, August 13. They are a few of the names on the Saint John of God Steeple Chase Football Pool. Come on, join in on the fun. It is easy; all you have to do is name your square, write a check, fill out the form below, enjoy the game and we do the rest. This is YOUR fantasy football! The pool includes 16 regular season games beginning Sunday, September 12. The payout per game: $100 half-time, $150 final. Cost for all 16 games is $80. Mere $5.00 per game. 6 ST. JOHN OF GOD PARISH PASTOR'S CORNER Fr. Lou Vallone "Ferragosto" is the name of a specifically Roman holiday. It means "days of August" (not unlike our American cliché of the dog days of August), and originally referred to August 13, a pagan summer celebration of the Roman Empire. As has been the Church's genius for millennia, when Christianity took over, it put the feast of the Assumption of Mary on August 15, thus "baptizing" the heathen into the Christian context. Although it at first meant just one day, like Topsy "it just grewed" to include the entire span of mid-july to the beginning of September. This time in Rome is very hot, very humid, very uncomfortable. Therefore, the Romans shut down practically everything and go away to find some relief from the heat at summer homes, the sea, etc. Even the Pope has left Rome already, as he has done every summer at this time, beginning a personal vacation moving to the summer Papal residence at Castello Gandolfo. No work gets done, and you are out of luck if you need something repaired or documented. Unfortunately, for us here in the States no such universal cultural hiatus exists - although many take individual vacations (like Fr. Rege this week). Life goes on at about the same pace. In fact, sometimes the pace picks up a bit. This year, we get somewhat of a break. Since the Holyday of the Assumption is on a Sunday, we don t have an extra obligation to attend Mass in the middle of the week. We get a two-for next Sunday. (We will gratefully accept both your Assumption and your regular Sunday envelops in the Sunday offertory, thank you!) Also, therefore, we will not have Town Hall Meetings in either parish I will use the Pastor s Corner as a virtual Town Hall Meeting for any pressing business. continued... MCKEES ROCKS, PA Also, for the first time in my priesthood, I am not preparing for the opening of the school year in my own Parish School. But Fr. Mike at St. Malachy s has offered to share all the work I want to do to help prepare for the start of the school year there. He is so kind! While St. John of God Parish has decided to forgo a multi-day festival this year in favor of several minifestivals spread out through the year, at St. Catherine we are gearing up for our big centennial celebration with Mass with Bishop Zubik on August 22 followed by the banquet at the Fez, to which all are invited. So, there is no lack of activity despite the languorous weather and the dog days. We would all rather be in the mountains with the Pope or at the seashore with Fr. Rege, but those of us who ain't so lucky to fully celebrate Ferragosto can offer up our hot and sweaty efforts on behalf of the Parishes for the extension of the Kingdom of God in Southwestern Pennsylvania and for the Poor Souls in Purgatory.
