A book in which you are invited to write in the names of your deceased loved ones is placed in the back vestibule of the Church and Chapel. Next weekend, November 14/15, bread kits consisting of one package of five frozen loaves of bread, zip lock bags, a thanksgiving Prayer, and instructions will be available at the Gathering Place. We are looking for seven (7) people to volunteer to bake these loaves at home and bring them to Mass on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, to be blessed and given to each family attending Mass. Thanks in advance for your help. THANKSGIVING BASKETS With the preparation of Thanksgiving in our own families, we are reminded of families in our parish who are less fortunate that we. Our parish will collect non-perishable food as well as paper products and soap for families on two weekends: November 7 & 8 and November 14 & 15. Monetary donations will be gratefully accepted. Please mark the envelope Thanksgiving Dinner and place it in the collection basket at Mass. Thank you in advance. The non-perishable food we collect at Mass on Thanksgiving Day will be given to the Little Sisters of the Poor in support of their ministry to the elderly. 4 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 8, 2009 MAKE A GIFT THROUGH AN IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER In most years, if you are over the age of 70 1/2, you must take a required minimum distribution from your IRA. In 2009, however, you may instruct your IRA custodian to withhold the normal required distribution. As usual, the amount of any distribution is taxed as ordinary income. However, federal legislation enacted on October 3, 2008 extends the opportunity for you, for the remainder of 2009, to make a direct distribution from your IRA to a qualified charity, such as Saint John of God Parish or School. Such distributions, up to $100,000, are not subject to income tax. For more information about how you and our parish or school can benefit from an IRA charitable rollover, contact the parish office or Paul Stabile, the Director of Planned Giving for the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh at SAINT JOHN OF GOD STEEPLE CHASE DRIVE TRIP #2 Sunday, December 6, 2009 Depart St. Mary s Church 9:30 AM Return approximately 8:00 PM Holiday Lights, Lunch, Theatre in Historic Ligonier & Overly EVENING OF REFLECTION The semi-annual Evening of Reflection for those who are Separated or Divorced, sponsored by the Office for Adult and Family Faith Formation of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, will be offered on Thursday, November 12, 2009 from 7-9 PM at the auditorium of St. Paul Seminary, Crafton. The presenter will be Fr. Peter Horton, a priest of the Diocese of Pittsburgh who is currently Involved in campus ministry. His topic is Why Bad Things Happen to Good People. Fr. Horton will reflect on Separation and Divorce in the Light of the Garden of Gethsemane and the Garden of Easter. These two pivotal moments in the life of Jesus, the movement of the paschal mystery from the darkness of Gethsemane to the Joy of Easter is a profound mystery of faith that involves deeply felt human emotions, the same emotions we may feel in our journey of separation and divorce and a new beginning filled with hope and joy. Both our disillusionment and our hope are real, the journey is often painful, but the end result is the joy of resurrection. 5 PASTOR'S CORNER Fr. Lou Vallone We are still celebrating and praying during this Year of the Priest. Fr. Zajdel gave you some reflections last week. It's my turn. 1. I hasten to assure you that I have never visited any of the outrages that Fr. Bob chronicled about pastors and assistants on any priest that I have been pastor of, least of all my brothers Fr. Bob, Fr. Rege, Fr. Al or Fr. Larry. However, he has given me some GREAT ideas! 2. People at both parishes have been chiding me about not being around for Masses much - although I have only been away for two weekends in the past 4 months. But I understand the perception from the perspective of those who attend the same Mass every Sunday. Here is how the math works out. There are 52 weekends in a year. I teach in Rome for most of June. Priests are entitled (and encouraged by law) to take a month's vacation, a week's retreat and a week's continued education each year so we don't get stale or burn out. That means that I am scheduled away from my assignment 8 weekends a year, leaving 44. I am only a part time pastor at each of my two parishes, and rotate the Mass schedule at each of them, meaning that I have 22 weekends at St. Catherine, and 22 at St. John of God. I normally do all three of the Masses at SCAT when I am there, but at SJOG we have 4 (and sometimes, like during confirmation preparation, 5) Masses at two churches. I by law am not supposed to celebrate more than 3 Sunday Masses, which means that I hit each of the scheduled Masses at SJOG half of the 22 times I am there - about 11 times a year. Often on continued next column... Saturday, I am also scheduled for weddings and/or funerals, so do not celebrate the Saturday evening Mass. If someone attends the same Mass every week at one of the churches while I am circuit riding the other two, it works out that they may only have me as a celebrant once a month, or once every five weeks. My heart and soul would celebrate as pastor every Mass every weekend for every parishioner. My body however cannot. And yes, I do miss each and every one of you when I am not there, and pray for each and every one of you no matter where I am. 3. Our revivalist next week is Fr. Ed Miller of St. Bernadine Church in Baltimore. He is one of the finest priests that God has ever gifted His people with. Internationally known as a preacher and pastor of a premier African-American parish, he has pastored there as long as I have been ordained. When I became pastor of St. Benedict the Moor at the tender age of 33 and only 8 years ordained, I was a clueless kid comparatively. At a workshop, Fr. Ed gave the keynote, and I asked him to mentor me, which he has done now for almost 30 years. I make no pastoral move without his advice and consent, and never will. He has been to me a model, an inspiration, a mentor, a friend and a brother. Although 250 highway miles have physically separated us, phones, letters, and visits have always kept us as one. I want to be just like him when I grow up. If you read between the lines, you will realize that I have brought him in this year more for my sake and revival than yours. But do yourself a favor and come to the revival Nov. 16, 17 and 18 at the Church at St. Mary at 6:30 PM each evening. You can complain to him if you don't like the way I turned out. His only fault is that he snores like a freight train!
