The proceeds from this collection are used to support a number of programs in our Diocese, which serve many children and young people who depend on our generosity and our loving concern for them. This collection will be taken at all Masses celebrated for Christmas in St. John of God Parish. Also, this collection is a two-fold win. Not only does it help children and youth, but all proceeds collected will be credited towards our Parish Share Assessment. Since we have met our Parish Share goal for 2010, this money will stay in the parish and not be taxed by the Diocese. CLOSED FOR CHRISTMAS Parish Office: The Parish Office will be closed on Friday, Dec. 24 and Monday, Dec. 27. Please hold all calls until Tuesday, Dec. 28 unless it is an emergency. Pizza Kitchen: The Pizza Kitchen will be closed on Friday, Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. The Pizza Kitchen will be back in operation on Friday, Jan. 7, Sunday School: There will be no Sunday School on Dec. 26 and Jan. 2. Classes will resume for all students on Sunday, Jan. 9, CHRISTMAS MUSIC PROGRAM The annual Christmas program of Carols and Anthems will be sung by the St. John of God Adult Choir on Christmas Eve beginning at 11:30 PM with Mass beginning at Midnight. The program will feature Silent Night sung in the ethnic heritage languages of St. John of God parish. Selections from the Christmas Program will be sung by the Adult Choir also on Sunday, December 26, Feast of the Holy Family before the 11:30 AM in St. Mary s Church. MEN S WEEKEND RETREAT How do you consider your personal relationship with God? As with any relationship in life, one must also work at their relationship with God. St. Catherine of Siena s Annual Men s Retreat will be held the weekend of January 28-30, 2011 at St. Paul of the Cross Monastery in Pittsburgh. St. Catherine s invite our brothers from our sister parish of St. John of God to join us. 6 ST. JOHN OF GOD PARISH PASTOR S CORNER FR. LOU VALLONE (This is a repeat from another assignment but the sentiment remains the same.) It s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. These were the words playing on my clock radio at 6:00 AM to wake me today. Most of you know that I firmly resist anything Christmas-y until the fourth Sunday of Advent is over. And this year that has been rather easier than in the past. The moderate weather (I put 50 miles on my motorcycle last week) has made it a simple task to ignore the usual seasonal madness. The calendar says that Winter doesn t begin until December 21, but we in Pittsburgh are used to blustery weather much sooner that that. This year, however, the climate has been far kinder. But this morning, I did have to relent a little bit on my strong Advent first resolve, and the weather was the cause: there was a light but definite snow shower in progress. As I looked out the window, the flakes were driving through the beams of the Church floodlight, and even I had to admit that in fact it was beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Don t get me wrong - there is still much preparation to go if we want to welcome the Infant Jesus properly on Saturday (we still won t decorate the Church until this week - come and help!) And I will not print my annual Christmas Pastor s Corner until next week s bulletin. I haven t lost total sight of my battle cry It ain t Christmas until it s Christmas. And I still intend to put off opening my cards and gifts and do my own Christmas celebrating until the 12 days following December 25. But for these few early morning moments, while the snowflakes fly in their first local appearance, and the carols play on the radio to draw me from sleep to the work of the day, I m willing to relent a little and admit: It s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. MCKEES ROCKS, PA STEEPLE CHASE SUPER BOWL FOOTBALL POOL Regular season football is still underway, and we don t know who will play in this year s Super Bowl yet. But, we do know the game is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011 between the AFC and the NFC. We hope the AFC team is the Steelers, but even if it isn t, we are offering two versions of a Super Bowl pool. There are 100 blocks in each pool. One pool will cost $35, will have four payouts for a total $1,700: $100 first quarter, $500 half time, $100 third quarter and $1,000 final. The other pool will cost $100, will have four payouts for a total $5,000: $500 1st quarter, $1,000 half-time, $500 3rd quarter, $3,000 final. (Payment plan available for $100 pool only, final payment due January 19, 2011). For this pool only you will get 4 sets of numbers. One set for each quarter. The first set will be for 1st quarter score, the second set for halftime score, the third set for the 3rd quarter score and the last set for the final score.
