St. John of God Parish would like to establish a JUNIOR LADIES OF CHARITY Junior Ladies of Charity are composed of youth and young adults with a desire to reach out and serve those less fortunate. They do this by observing the charism of St. Vincent de Paul, of seeing Christ in persons who are poor, and finding ways to be of service in body, mind and spirit. Youth and young adults who join the ranks of the Vincentian Family bring the energy and enthusiasm of seeing new ways to be of service. They begin to understand the need to work together against the forces of poverty and injustice in their communities. They will also come to understand the need to change the systems that allow and encourage the continuation of poverty. 3 YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS Mark your calendar for the Fall Retreat on Nov at Camp Allegheny! The Fall Retreat is a weekend geared toward teens in high school, grades The videos, music, speakers, topics, scenery, and schedule are all designed to meet teenagers where they are and help them take the next step in their faith. The goal is not to shove religion down your throat, but to offer you the truth, give you opportunities to encounter the Living God, and provide time for you to talk about it with your friends. PERSONAL CARE / NURSING HOMES The Ladies of Charity are collecting cosmetic bags that they will fill with personal care/hygiene items for the residents of personal care homes and nursing homes. If you have an extra cosmetic bag at home please donate it to the Ladies of Charity for this project. Boxes are placed at all entrances to the Church and Chapel. Also, anyone who can donate travel size hygiene products can place them in a designated box too. Thank you in advance! PARENT MEETING WITH FR. LOU CONCERNING FUTURE OF CCD PROGRAM All CCD parents are strongly encouraged to attend a Parent Meeting with Fr. Lou on Sunday, October 23, after the 9:30 A.M. Mass in MOS Chapel. Since our CCD attendance has not substantially increased, we are facing closing our CCD program next year. Fr. Lou would like to discuss future possibilities with the parents. Effective teams of clergy And lay leaders. The On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative is entering an essential phase of consultation with all parishioners in Southwestern PA. After years of consultation and study with clergy and lay leaders throughout the Church of Pittsburgh, the On Mission process will present DRAFT proposals for your input and consultation. These ideas have been developed using twenty-one specific criteria which you can find at onmissionchurchalive.org. These ideas are incomplete because they do not have your input. Check out the reverse side of this page for more information on how you can shape the future of our local Church.

The DRAFT proposals or models are a description of how a group of parishes could potentially look in the future with respect to: input will shape what happens... but only if you share it. 5 ways you can help shape the proposals for the future: 1. Prioritize the outreach needs in your community. 2. Evaluate the strength of each proposed option based on those priorities. 3. Assess the suggested parish groupings in each option. 4. Rank proposed options and potential church campuses for future parish use. 5. Provide questions, alternatives, and ideas that can lead to other options. Strategies including evangelization, stewardship, and worship Parish structures including church buildings and Mass times, and care for all schools, hospitals, prisons, nursing facilities within the community Leadership staffing, including clergy and lay staffing what information was used to create these initial drafts? Trends and demographics of the entire population. The number of Catholics over the past five years who have been baptized, confirmed, married, and who attend weekend Mass. The number of seats we have in our Church buildings and the number of weekend Masses offered. Consultation with our priests, deacons, and the lay leaders. The complete financial picture of our parishes including revenue, expenses, savings, and debt. Enrollment numbers in religious education and Catholic schools, as well as the needs for pastoral care in hospitals, prisons, and nursing facilities. Saint John of God Parish sessions will take place: Thursday, October 20, 7-9 P.M. and Wednesday, October 26, 7-9 P.M. in St. Mary s Church.

7 PASTOR'S CORNER Fr. Lou Vallone As a follow up to last week's Pastor's Corner about the importance of attendance at Sunday Mass for the sake of the October count, we have declared every Sunday of October as "No excuse Sunday" so that everyone can be accommodated at Mass: No Excuse Sundays In order to make it possible for everyone to attend Church all month, we are planning special no-excuse Sundays. 1. Cots will be placed in the Church for those who say, "Sunday is my only day for sleeping in." 2. Eye drops will be available for those whose eyes are tired from watching TV too late on Saturday night. 3. We will have steel helmets for those who believe the roof will cave in if they show up at Church. 4. Blankets will be furnished for those who complain that the Church is too cold. Fans will be on hand for those who say the Church is too hot. 5. We will have hearing aids for those members who say, "the speakers don't talk loud enough." There will be cotton for those who say, "the speakers talk too loud." 6. Score cards will be available for those who wish to count the hypocrites. 7. We guarantee that some relatives will be present for those who like to go visiting on Sunday. 8. There will be TV dinners available for those who claim they can't go to Church and cook dinner, too. 9. One section of the Church will have some trees and grass for those who see God in nature, especially on the golf course. 10. The Church will be decorated with both Christmas poinsettias and Easter lilies to create a familiar environment for those who have never seen the Church without them. 11. Ashes will be distributed, as well as Palms, for those who only go to Church to get them. 12. Special monitors will broadcast the score of any important sports events that are ongoing during the services. In all seriousness, it is essential that our people do continue their Church attendance if they wish to see our parish continue in the future. And it is most critical that all parishioners attend one of the two Town Hall Meetings Thursday, October 20, 7-9 and Wednesday, October 26, 7-9 in St. Mary s Church. Information will be provided about the On Mission program and feedback will be taken at those meetings that may determine whether our parish and church will survive past See you in Church! CONFIRMATION PROGRAM Our Confirmation Program continues this Sunday, Oct. 9 during regular Sunday School time 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Mother of Sorrows Chapel. All will attend the 9:30 AM Mass. St. Catherine of Siena Parish holds the exact same program on Saturdays from 4 to 6:15 PM. If you cannot come to St. John of God, you have the option to go to St. Catherine s. Please call John Fatula at for any further information. DAY OF RECOLLECTION The Lay Carmelites of Pittsburgh are sponsoring a day of recollection Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016 from 8:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Fr. Lawrence Manchas, OCDS will speak on The New Adam and the New Eve at Martina Spiritual Renewal Center in Ross Township. Cost is $35.00 and includes breakfast and lunch.
