KILLMEYER Married to wife, Chris, for 38 years, ordained as a deacon in Deacon Tim has been a resident of Robinson Twp. since 1981, moving there with Chris on their first anniversary. Prior to that he lived with his parents on Middletown Rd. in Pittsburgh's Sheraden neighborhood and was a member of the former St. Martin Parish in Crafton Heights where he went to grade school and matriculated high school at Canevin, graduating in A cook and chef for 14 years, he now spends his time coordinating the health care for Chris while seeing to his diaconal duties in the new parish grouping as well as his diaconal ministry of charity and justice with the diocesan Department for Persons With Disabilities. His degrees in theology and religious education help him to lead others to an understanding of their Catholic faith. Deacon Tim s love of bicycling led him to be part of the group that created the Montour Trail. (He has twice ridden his bicycle from Pittsburgh to Washington D.C.) He is also a long-time practitioner of the Chinese exercise, T ai Chi Ch uan. Welcome Deacon Tim! We estimate the age of the bricks to be around 100 years old, from when the church was built at this location. A special Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Zubik on Sunday, October 7, at 2:30 PM at St. Paul Cathedral. A light reception will follow in the Cathedral hall. BICYCLING FUN WITH THE TRINITY TRAIL TREKKERS What is it about bicycles that makes a person feel like a kid again? There aren t many better ways to enjoy the outdoors and get fit at the same time. The Trinity Trail Trekkers are a group of cycling enthusiasts of all ages who come together a couple times a month to ride different bicycle trails in the area. They ve put together a calendar and welcome anyone to join them. It is suggested that your bicycle be in good shape and that your fitness level be on par with the mileage for any given ride (but feel free to challenge yourself!). Lou Vallone This week is the celebration of the Declaration of Independence the birthday of the United States as a sovereign government and a new nation thereby creating a new nationality of people. The consequences of that act are literally uncountable, but an insight can be gotten from the following article which appeared anonymously on the internet, but it was written by an Australian in response to an offer in a foreign paper to reward killing an American, any American: "An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani, or Afghan. An American may also be a Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as native Americans. An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan. The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses. An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God. An American is from the most prosperous land in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each person the pursuit of happiness. supplies to enable the people to win back their country! As of that morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan. Americans welcome the best, the best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best athletes. But they also welcome the least. The national symbol of America, The Statue of Liberty, welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed. These in fact are the people who built America. Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11, 2001 earning a better life for their families. I've been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 other countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists. So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse- Tung, and every bloodthirsty tyrant in the history of the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself. Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American. On the observance of the creation of the United States and therefore of Americans we wish everyone a happy holiday, and may God bless America and all true Americans. An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need.
