AND GLENN MARTONIK BY FAMILY MOTHER OF SORROWS - IN MEMORY OF ANTHONY CARLEO BY THERESA EVANS YEAR-END STATEMENTS In Case You Didn t Get The Epiphany Prayer 20 C+M+B 09 Lord God of heaven and earth, You revealed your only begotten Son to every nation by guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill them with the light of Christ, that their concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. (Chalk available in the Sacristy) We will be mailing to you a list of your contributions for 2008 by January 31, If you do not receive envelopes, you will not receive a report. If you receive envelopes, but didn t use them, you will receive a report marked $0.00 contributions, and the computer may deactivate you. You may be removed from the envelope list. And your status is reduced to inactive parishioner, which means that you will not qualify for things like sponsorship certificates and a number of other things. Of course, you always have the right to come to Church, receive the sacraments if you are spiritually disposed and call upon the clergy for pastoral service. But you will lose some of the privileges of active participation. Since we will not compute the report till the end of January, you have time to make contributions for the 2008 year, but you must make it clear to us that it is to be credited to the 2008 account. We have started the 2009 contribution records already. MEN S RETREAT REMINDER The men s retreat scheduled for St. John of God Parish and St. Catherine of Siena Parish at St. Paul s Monastery on Jan. 30 to Feb. 1 will be here before you know it. This is a great opportunity to become closer with God and to deepen your spirituality. For those who have attended previous years have all experienced a closer yet different experience with our own relationships with God. Car pooling is available for those who need it. The retreat begins Friday evening and concludes around Noon time on Sunday. As previously mentioned, yes the Super Bowl is Feb. 1st BUT there is plenty of time for us to get back to McKees Rocks and Crescent Township. We will be home by 1:00 PM. The retreat can be flexible in arrival and departure times for those in need. For a brochure or for more information, please call Bob Bittner at or Jim Barcaskey at ,

ANTHONY SCHOOL PROGRAMS AND DEPAUL SCHOOL FOR HEARING AND SPEECH Second Collection Next Weekend, Jan. 17/18 The Pittsburgh Diocese is home to two nationally recognized educational programs for children with special needs: St. Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech (formerly known as The DePaul Institute). A special collection to benefit these two organizations will be taken next weekend, January 17-18, 2009 at all Masses celebrated in St. John of God Parish. St. Anthony School Programs provides Catholic special education to children with development delays and autism in 10 schools within the Diocese and one college-age program located on the campus of Duquesne University. DePaul School for Hearing and Speech teaches deaf or hard of hearing children how to listen, learn and speak, so that these children may fully participate in our hearing and speaking world. Your donation will help St. Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech to further their goals of providing quality educational programs and services for their students. This collection is a two-fold win. Not only does it benefit these two vital programs of the Diocese but all monies collected will be credited towards our 2008 Parish Share assessment. Since we have met our goal for 2008 this collection will automatically be deposited in our savings at Catholic Institute and not be taxed. ST. Some suggestions for celebration: Recall your own vocation story and share it with your family. Pray for vocations. Make a daily sacrifice this week for those who are discerning their vocation. PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Gracious God, you call each of us by name and gift us with a mission and purpose to fulfill your will on Earth as it is in heaven. Show us the path to holiness in our daily lives. Lead all who are discerning your call to marriage, single, consecrated life or priesthood to hear your voice and to respond generously to your love. With gratitude we offer this prayer through Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. MAKE A GIFT THROUGH AN IRA CHAFRITABLE ROLLOVER If you are over the age of 70 1/2, you must take a required minimum distribution from your IRA. Normally, the amount of this distribution is taxed as ordinary income. However, federal legislation enacted on October 3, 2008 extends the opportunity for you, throughout 2009, to make a direct distribution from your IRA to a qualified charity, such as St. John of God Parish. Such distributions, while not subject to income tax, will still count toward fulfilling your required minimum distribution. For more information about how you and your parish can benefit from an IRA charitable rollover, contact the parish office or Paul Stabile, the Director of Planned Giving for the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh at BLOOD DRIVE Give the gift of life! Support the 6th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blood Drive for Life on Sat., Jan. 17, 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM at St. Benedict the Moor Church (above Mellon Arena). Commemorate Dr. King s life and legacy by donating blood. Sponsored by the Office for Black Catholic Ministries in partnership with the Central Blood Bank, and cosponsored by several organizations and Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, City of Pittsburgh. To schedule your appointment, call the Office for Black Ministries ( ) or the Central Blood Bank ( or log onto then enter sponsor code G ).

5 PASTOR'S CORNER Fr. Lou Vallone The first piece of mail that I opened in the new year of 2009 was from the Internal Revenue Service, congratulating me on the fact that I had been chosen to participate in a new form of reporting my income and paying my taxes. It gave me an ID number, and said I could file a totally electronic form, no paperwork, if I wished. They would send me all the software for my computer to work out my taxes, and modem the results to the IRS directly. I imagine the simplified form to look something like this: A. How much did you earn last year? B. How much did you spend last year? C. How much do you have left? D. Please forward all of ( C ) to the IRS. This gives me the opportunity to discuss some financial matters affecting you and the Parish. 1. We will be mailing to you a list of your contributions for 2008 by the beginning of February. If you do not receive envelops, you will not receive a report. If you receive envelops, but didn't use them, you will receive a report marked $0.00 contributions, and the computer will deactivate you. You will be removed from the envelop list and the active rolls. 2. Since we will not compute the report till the end of January, you have time to make contributions for the 2008 year, but you must make it clear to us that it is to be credited to the 2008 account. We have started the 2009 records. continued next column.. 3. We encourage you to check your charitable contribution status with whoever does your taxes. If you have the ability to give more to the Church than you have, please consider making the contribution to the maximum amount. It is better to give to the Parish than to the IRS, in my opinion! 4. You can specify if you wish where certain contributions are to be allocated, and this can help us. For example, PSP contributions and large contributions to the Renovation Account (at St. John of God) or the Debt Reduction (at St. Catherine) are not taxed by the diocese, and therefore are worth 17.6% more than the amount you give since we save that assessment. Just make a note on the envelop or check or whatever where you would like your contribution allocated. 5. Cash is not the only contribution that would help us. For example, some people reassign stock to the parish. They may have paid a low price for it, but by giving it to the parish they get credit for a higher amount if the stock went up, and won't pay capital gains taxes. Check with your tax adviser. There is also some tax savings on rollover retirement accounts. See the note in the bulletin or call us for information. Above all, thank you for your generosity and support of the Church and its work. We try to be good stewards here.
