4 ST. JOHN OF GOD PARISH RULES & REGULATIONS FOR ST. MARK CEMETERY AND ST. MARY CEMETERY (Taken from the Rules & Regulations Guideline Book) Please note the following concerning the First Sunday after Easter: To permit spring grass cutting and grave preparation all winter decorations must be removed. All artificial flowers and greens must be removed from the front of the monument/marker for grass cutting and trimming. (Grass cutters have been injured from the wire stems getting caught in the machine blades.) Items Prohibited in the Cemeteries Planting of trees, shrubs, evergreens, and bushes are prohibited. Fences, coping, hedges or other types of enclosures are prohibited and interfere with grass cutting. Concrete, iron, wooden, glass, plastic, paper as well as any other object of a temporary nature are prohibited. Any grave decoration that is not of religious character will not be permitted. Items Permitted Within the Cemeteries Annual plants provided they are planted within a square area that can not extend past 12 inches wide at the head of the monument/marker and 12 inches in length from the face of the monument/marker. On wreath may be placed at the head of the grave or lot from November 1 to the First Sunday after Easter Sunday. Plastic and silk flowers may be attached securely to the monument/marker. However, if they fall off they will be discarded. Reminder: There may be no artificial decorations in grass cutting season. If there are any questions or comments concerning whether or not something is permitted in our Cemeteries, contact the Cemetery Manager, Jim Gilbert, at , for a full explanation of our guidelines. This applies to both cemeteries. SEVEN CHURCH VISITATION Following our Parish s celebration of the Mass of the Lord's Supper at 6:30 PM on Holy Thursday, April 17, we will once again have a bus going on the traditional Seven Church Visitation. Everyone is invited to participate in this beautiful old custom of visiting seven churches as prayerful pilgrims. The bus will leave from St. Mary s parking lot following the Mass and return approximately at 11:30 PM to St. Mary s. The Church will remain open until 12 Midnight. FLEA MARKET NEWS Are you spring cleaning? Wait!!! Don t throw anything away! Keep those items and donate them to our annual Flea Market (date to be announced). Your unwanted items may very well be someone else s treasures. Times and dates that items may be donated will be announced shortly. BLANKETS, QUILTS, BEDSPREADS Chartiers Manor Personal Care Home located at 814 Chartiers Ave. is in dire need of blankets, quilts, & bed spreads, any size, any color, for the residents who live there. You may bring your donation to Chartiers Manor, Building 2, which is the old McKees Rocks Catholic School Building. The entrance is the lower door by the lower parking lot. The dinner is only 3 weeks away! IF NOT, WHY NOT????? Father Lou has made arrangements for Pope Francis to be at the dinner... Come and have your picture taken with Pope Francis. Invite your family and friends for a delicious Chicken Romano Dinner with all the trimmings. You can kick back, relax, enjoy the meal and no cooking or clean up is required. You can eat in and/or take out. The caterer will do all the work. Since the event is being catered we have to guarantee a fixed number of dinners. Your early purchase of tickets will help us meet the caterer s requirements. If you haven t already done so, please purchase your ticket(s) today. Plans are underway for a wonderful Chinese Auction, 50/50 raffle, a gourmet sweet shop, and a photo opportunity with Pope Francis. Over those years, they have performed in 160 different schools, retirement homes, including 143 churches of all denominations. With their last performance this year, it will be the 416th performance! Lou Vallone The world has its Easter Egg Hunts and Easter Parade and any number of activities that are pretty far removed from the main message: Christ is Risen from the Dead! Here is a project for kids that teaches the lesson of Easter better than dyed eggs and sartorial splendor. I have printed it before, but you might actually want to do it this year. Instructions: Resurrection Cookies Recipe: You will need: 1 cup whole pecans 1 teaspoon vinegar 3 egg whites a pinch salt 1 cup sugar a zipper baggy 1 wooden spoon scotch tape Bible Preheat oven to 300F. *** (this is very important --- don't wait until you are half done with the recipe). Place pecans in zipper baggy and beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested. He was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read: John 19:1-3 Smell the vinegar. Put 1 teaspoon vinegar into mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross He was given vinegar to drink. Read: John 19:28-30 Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read: John 10:10&11. Sprinkle a little salt into each hand. Taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read: Luke 23:27 MCKEES ROCKS, PA So far the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 cup sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him. Read: Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16 Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read: Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3 Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoon onto waxed paper covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid. Read: Matthew 27:57-60 Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF. Take a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus tomb was sealed. Read: Mat. 27:65-66 GO TO BED! Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus' followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read: John 16:20&22 On Resurrection Sunday (Easter) morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty.
