The children will be attending the 9:30 AM Mass. After Mass this Sunday, Sept. 9, the children will return to their classrooms for a snack and the parents are encouraged to come meet the teachers. CATECHETICAL SUNDAY Next Sunday, Sept. 16, at the 9:30 AM Mass in Mother of Sorrows, St. John of God Parish will join with parishes around the United States in the celebration of Catechetical Sunday. The theme for this year is Catechists and Teachers as Agents of the New Evangelization. All R.C.I.A. Catechists, Sunday School Catechists and those helping in the Baptismal Program and Youth Ministry Program will be commissioned to serve. Light refreshments will follow this Mass in the Social Hall. Let us keep in our prayers all those involved in the crucial ministry of catechesis in our parish. Please Note: Students will be dismissed after the 9:30 AM Mass next Sunday, Sept. 16. Everyone is welcome to the reception in the Social Hall to greet our Catechists for the 2012 catechetical year. BISHOP S EDUCATION FUND This weekend, Sept. 8/9, the annual collection for the Bishop s Education Fund will be taken at all Masses. Your donation will help ensure that the great tradition of our Catholic Schools will continue. Many students in our Diocese would like to benefit from a Catholic school education, but a number of those students need financial assistance. MCKEES ROCKS, PA HOW DOES A PERSON BECOME A CATHOLIC? The R.C.I.A. Program (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process within the Church for welcoming and initiating new members into the Catholic Faith. Classes will begin in St. John of God Parish in late September. The program is for those who want to become Catholic or for a Catholic adult who has not received First Communion or Confirmation. 5 TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 9, 2012 CONFIRMATION NEWS Bishop William J. Winter will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation for those preparing for this important Sacrament on Saturday, November 24, in Saint John of God Parish during the 4:30 PM Mass in St. Mary s Church. Our Confirmation Program will begin on Sunday, Sept. 30, during regular Sunday School time 9:00 AM to 11:15 AM PM at Mother of Sorrows Chapel. All will attend the 9:30 AM Mass. Parents and those to be confirmed are required to attend this first session on Sept. 30. St. Catherine of Siena Parish will hold the exact same program on Saturdays from 4 to 6 PM beginning on Sept. 29. If you cannot come to St. John of God, you have the option to go to St. Catherine s. ADULT CHOIR NEWS The St. John of God Adult Choir Rehearsal will begin this Tuesday, September 11, at 7:00 PM in St. Mary s Church. 6 ST. JOHN OF GOD PARISH PASTOR'S CORNER Fr. Lou Vallone (This week is the anniversary of the horrendous terrorist attacks on our country of 9/11/01. Many things have changed in our culture as a result, not all of them positive. At that time, I wrote a Corner in an immediate response to the events. I am repeating that Corner on this anniversary as a way of reinforcing our Catholic Christian response in the long run to the events.) Having been in the seminary for high school, college and graduate school, I never had a course in Anatomy and Physiology. Therefore, when a medical condition arose in my family, I began to do research and learned some amazing things about the body and nervous system I had never known. All actions begin with an incorporeal thought in our mind and is physically transmitted from the brain through the neural pathways of our body to be carried out by whatever limbs are involved. For example, the mind says to take a sip of coffee, and that command makes its way from the brain through the nerves in our spinal column to our arm to pick up the cup and bring it to our lips. Or I may want to walk across the room, and somehow that wish travels physically from the brain through the nerves in my spine to the legs, which then begin to take steps. And messages that these things are being done travel back along the same routes, in case of need of correction, verification, etc. This all happens in fractions of a second: brain through spinal column to limb and back from limb through spinal column to brain, with the nerves doing the transmitting of signals. But sometimes, this route is shortened by necessity. In the case of pain or threatened injury, even the tiny fraction of a second that the normal MCKEES ROCKS, PA course takes is too long for the body, so the messages only go as far as the spinal column, and the return message goes back from there without involving the brain. For example, if I lay my hand on a hot stove, the sensation of burning only gets as far as my spinal column before the command comes back to remove it from the heat. Only after the immediate threat has been reacted to by the body does the brain kick in for follow up action: cool the burn, put a bandage on it, etc. The immediate self-preserving reaction comes before the mind kicks in for long term protective and repair action. As a nation, we have reacted to the threat and damage of the events of 9/11 reflexively: rescue operations, donations, prayers, increased security, and so on. But now is the time for the brain to kick back in and take control. It is a longer and more deliberate process that is indicated at this time for our long term preservation. Knee-jerk reactions like revenge, despair, panic, violence, suspension of rights and abandonment of the best of our way of life are not appropriate for the continued health and survival of our nation and our human race. The nervous system has done its job in reacting so quickly and instinctively. Now we must be calm and deliberative, rational and thoughtful as we face what will be a radical change in our lives from this point on. And prayer is always a proper and life giving response, both instinctively and deliberatively. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.
