3 HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS All teens entering grades 8-12 are invited to be part of the Friends of the Poor Walk next Saturday, Sept. 30, at Fairhaven Park. Registration is at 8:30 A.M. and the walk will take place 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Walkers are needed as are other volunteers to help with the event. Help the poor while you earn service hours! Teens are also invited to Faith Afloat aboard the Gateway Clipper s Empress on Sunday, October 15, from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. This cruise is an opportunity for high schoolers to delve into their deepest identity as a son or daughter of God and learn how to witness their Catholic Faith to the culture. The cruise will include dinner, a talk by Father Tom Sparacino, a witness by Theresa Sullivan, and praise and worship led by Dave Belkowski. Cost is only $10 per person. All youth in grades 5-8 AND their families are invited to get their ninja on with Flight s Ninja Warrior obstacle course! Not trained in the mystical arts of the ninja? Come and bounce for an hour! Winter will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation for those preparing for this important Sacrament on Saturday Nov. 25, in Saint John of God Parish during the 4:30 PM Mass in St. Mary s Church. Candidates and Sponsors must be in Church and seated by 4:00 P.M. Our Confirmation Program will begin next Sunday, October 1, immediately following the 9:45 A.M. Mass in St. Mary s Church. Parents and those to be confirmed are required to attend the first session. The Confirmation Program is for those in ninth grade and up and any adults who are Baptized and who received First Eucharist. Those in tenth grade and up, including adults, who wish to prepare for Confirmation at this time must contact Deacon Len Thomas at for further information. St. Catherine of Siena Parish will hold the exact same program on Saturdays from 4:00 to 6:15 PM beginning on Sept. 30. If you cannot come to St. John of God, you have the option to go to St. Catherine s. HOSPITAL Please pray for all parishioners who are in the hospital. Those who worked all day were jealous that those who worked only one hour received the same pay for their labor. They thought that it was unfair, that they deserved more. It highlights that God loves all his children lavishly, that his generosity is without measure and that his mercy know no limits. 7 PASTOR'S CORNER Fr. Lou Vallone Next week we begin the preparation classes at both parishes for those ninth grade and older who are to be confirmed on Saturday evening Nov. 25, Christ the King Sunday. This is the final sacrament of initiation, making these brothers and sisters of ours full, adult, mature and responsible members of our Catholic Christian Church. Here are some observations that they may well want to take into consideration during their preparation period: 1. Some people are kind, polite, and sweet-spirited until you try to get into their pews or their favorite church parking spot. 2. Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisers. 3. It is easier to preach ten sermons than it is to live one. 4. We were called to be witnesses, not lawyers. 5. When you get to your wit's end, you'll find God lives there. 6. People are funny. They want the front of the bus, middle of the road, and the back of the church. 7. Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on your door for years. 8. Quit griping about your church; if it was perfect, you couldn't belong. 9. The phrase that is guaranteed to wake up a congregation: "And in conclusion." 10. If the church wants a better pastor, it only needs to pray for the one it has. 11. Not only are the sins of the fathers visited upon the children, but nowadays the sins of the children are visited upon the fathers. 12. God Himself does not propose to judge a man till he is dead. So why should you? 13. Some minds are like concrete, thoroughly mixed up and permanently set. 14. I don't know why some people change churches. What difference does it make which one you stay home from? 15. A lot of church members are singing "Standing on the Promises" while they are just sitting on the premises. The program of preparation for the next 6 weeks will include the 4:00 PM Mass each Saturday followed by a talk at St. Catherine, or the 9:45 Mass each Sunday at St. Mary Church of St. John of God Parish. Although these are primarily intended for the confirmands, it is good continued education for all Catholics of all ages, and therefore everyone is invited to participate. Please pray for those who are going to receive the sacrament: we can always use more recruits to the army of the Lord. A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar Today Jesus is saying to us: Why are you idle? Go into my vineyard. Family, where the last will be first, is the vineyard entrusted to us in today s Gospel. Successful families are constructed by laborers, who work hard on family relationships, and not by couch potatoes.
