Because of age, illness, or changes in lifestyle some of our volunteers have left us. God is good in providing new volunteers. 5 HELP NEEDED FOR CHICKEN DINNER Our Chicken Dinner is Sunday, October 21 at Rockefellers and many people say they look forward to it. Let s not disappoint them. While the restaurant does do all the setting up and taking down and preparing the food, there are other vital areas where we need volunteers to bring about a successful event. Thankfully, some people have already agreed to cover various projects. Here is where we still require help: manage the bake sale, manage the 50/50 raffle, oversee and instruct servers, take charge of dessert donations and help with publicity. Additionally, help is needed to sell dinner tickets and presale 50/50 tickets as well as pick up and deliver items. If you are able to help in any of these areas or would like to talk about them, please call Terry, LIVING THE LITURGY Show me what is physically different between a host that is consecrated and one that is not. These are words that can be heard on the lips of anyone struggling with faith. Perhaps, they are heard on yours. Physical tests will reveal no difference. The difference is seen through faith. In one sense, it is simple. Either we believe that the Risen Christ is present - soul and divinity - or we do not. The fruits of faith are the proof. In the Eucharist, God enters into the very depths of who we are. However, it is our choice whether we ignore what He does or act fully upon it. The Eucharist can change us. When people see that we are different, they in turn will themselves believe. ST. They ve put together a calendar and welcome anyone to join them. 7 PASTOR'S CORNER Fr. Lou Vallone A regularly scheduled Town Hall Meeting was held after the evening Mass on the Feast of the Assumption. The following are a few of the topics covered. 1. The financial year ended on June 30, The official report will not be ready till some time in September, and it is our intention to provide the summary in the bulletin as is our custom by the time of the switchover to the new administration. What is being provided tonight is a skeletal summary from our own Quicken records. Basically, it shows that our finances continued to bleed downward - we functioned at a $40K deficit last year, but it was covered by our previous savings. We still have about $400K in operating reserves at this time. As well, we continue to carry a legacy debt of about $1.25 million, but have never had to borrow during my administration of the past 13 years. 2. The most distressing thing is that we for the first time since I have been Pastor have not paid off our Parish Share assessment by this time of the year. We are still about $16K short, which I hope we will make up by the December deadline. 3. The bulk of the deficit spending is on our aging physical plant. We had damage to the roof of St. Mary Church in a rainstorm earlier this year, and two separate flooding instances at Mother of Sorrows, and roof damage to the rectory. Insurance has partially covered the damage, but we have had to use our own reserves to cover more than $50K for repairs. Because of the particularly harsh winter, utility bills, snow removal, salt purchases, etc. have totaled over $125K of our $330K expenditures. We are not near bankruptcy, but are hemorrhaging more quickly as time goes on. 4. We are no longer responsible for the cemetery management, but that has put a strain on our budget as well since some of the expenses of the parish used to be assumed by the cemeteries and are now solely charged against the parish. 5. The changeover to the new grouping configuration with the new clergy teams is due to occur on October 15 including the new Mass scheduling. Our Mass schedule in our grouping will not have to change due to the fact we were ahead of the curve by changing in We continue to do well with attendance of about 900 seats out of 1500 occupied at the two weekend obligation masses, which is above the 50% critical mark. 6. It has been decided that Fr. Bob Zajdel as parochial vicar and Fr. Rege Ryan as assigned retired priest in residence will continue to live in the rectory at St. Mary Church. Since no one of the new team is going to move in, I have been graciously invited to stay in my current rooms whenever I am in Pittsburgh during my retirement. As I have told everyone: the rectory is old and shabby, but so are Fr. Bob Fr. Rege and I and therefore we are quite comfortable just the way we are and have been for the past decade. 7. The changes in the coming On Mission! Implementations are going to be less apparent and radical for us than for some of the other groupings in the diocese. You will see the new clergy team at Mass and the sacraments and some ways of doing things will be adjusted, but I think we are lucky that the switchover will be rather smooth, especially given the quality of leadership being brought to us by Fr. David Poecking, Fr. Alan Morris, Fr. Mike Ruffalo and Deacon Tim Kilmeyer. 8. On a personal note, given how shy and retiring I am, I would ask that there be no parties or gifts or any such effort to mark my retirement. I have been privileged and therefore well rewarded by my ministry here, and only ask that you continue to pray for me as God leads me forward. A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar In today s Gospel Jesus speaks of eating His flesh and blood. Parents can identify with this, for they often feel devoured by all the demands of family life. This is unavoidable for children grow in the soil of sacrificial love. Parenting is not part time work. It is a consuming lifetime commitment. Diocesan Victim Assistance Hotline
