A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar Parents plant values in their children anticipating the tiny seeds of honesty, respect, commitment and fidelity will grow with their child and one day become a safe haven to many. PARENTING POINTERS by Susan Vogt Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field. (Mt.: 13:36) Jesus talks a lot about seeds and weeds. Children of course are like the seeds that we nurture and hope to see blossom. But life doesn t always work neatly. As parents, we must sometimes carefully weed bad habits out of ourselves and our children without damaging the root and their spirit. Has your child inherited any bad weeds from you? Prune yourself first.

5 SCRIPTURE VERSE "The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all who cause others to sin and all evildoers. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father." - Mt 13:41-43a Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass 2001, 1998, 1970 CCD. For information or reservations, phone , admission@stvincent.edu,or register online at One of the responsibilities defined for members of the town board in my locale is that of weed commissioner. It is his job to ensure that the local ordinances on noxious weeds are enforced. This almost always means that he has to respond to a complaint from some neighbor about another resident's unkempt property. The weed commissioner doesn't really drive around looking for weeds to be exterminated. And he can't enforce any code on his own. All he can do is encourage a property owner to cut down any weeds or risk having it done for them with the cost added to next year's property tax bill. A weed commissioner probably wouldn't have been much help to the landowner in today's parable. After all, the weeds were growing among the wheat, and tearing out the weeds would have risked uprooting the crops. The consequences at that moment would have been too catastrophic to imagine for the farmer. Instead, he was willing to wait until harvest time when he would harvest the grain and burn the weeds. His patience would be rewarded with a decent crop, and he would not risk losing it all. God is infinitely patient. Like the landowner, God is willing to wait things out, letting a person's life take its course. The consequences come at the end. Like the property owner who discovers that his tax bill at the end of the year now contains an assessment for weed removal, so too do those who spend their lives living like weeds. In the end, the bill will come due. But one important message of the parable is that God is willing to give a person time. Good and bad grow together. And God gives the sinner an opportunity to change, to seek conversion. Not everyone chooses that path. But the promise of salvation is held out for all. And thank God for that!

7 PASTOR'S CORNER Fr. Lou Vallone (Summer is traditionally a time for reruns on TV. I guess the heat saps creative juices turning them into sweat. So I am rerunning this Pastor s Corner from a few years back. If you remember it, then good on ya, because it means you continue to come to Mass regularly during the summer. If you don t remember it uh-oh! You know what that means!) I was at several meetings last week along with some brother priests, listening to guys saying how happy they were that it was summer and things had slowed down for them. What slowdown? The only thing that has fallen off is Church attendance since summer began. Although this is understandable, with vacations and all, it is not a condition we want to become habit with anyone. Therefore, consider this: TEN little Christians came to church all the time; one fell out with the priest: then there were nine. NINE little Christians stayed up late; one overslept on Sunday: then there were eight. EIGHT little Christians on their way to heaven; one took the low road: then there were seven. SEVEN little Christians chirping like a chick; one didn't like the music: then there were six. SIX little Christians seemed very much alive; one got "travelitis": then there were five. FIVE little Christians pulling for heaven's shore; one stopped to rest a while: then there were four. FOUR little Christians, each busy as a bee; one got his feelings hurt: then there were three. THREE little Christians couldn't decide what to do; one couldn't have his way: then there were two. TWO little Christians - each won one more; add them up - two times two make four! FOUR little Christians worked early and late; each one brought one: now there were eight! EIGHT little Christians, if they decide as before, in just seven Sundays we'd have 1024! Summer or not, slow down or not, see you in Church! ST. JAMES ELEGANT JUNK SALE The annual Elegant Junk Sale, sponsored by the Women s Guild of St. James Church in Sewickley will take place on Saturday, July 26th from 8:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. in the cafeteria and parking lot garages located at 200 Walnut Street, adjacent to Rt. 65/ Ohio River Blvd, near the Sewickley Bridge.
